Preseason 2007-2008

This is the thread for all offseason/preseason dealings not associated with the transfer market. Mainly for friendlies/tours (is a tour of Japan being discussed still?), but also for news on training, etc.

To start things off, we have not quite decided on a training spot for this summer, but Trentino, Val Venosta, and Malles are all spots that Novellino's staff are thinking of.

Reale Mutua and Berretta are going to remain our shirt sponsors for next season, and they particularly like the appointment of Novellino.

I haven't seen anything on the website about preseason friendlies yet.

Also, I had been reading about this before, Stefano Antonelli is our new general director, replacing Tosi, and Fabio Lupo is our new sport director. I feel bad for not bringing it up earlier but was surprised it was not being discussed earier, as it is very important for our team. Antonelli brings much more knowledge of the mercato than Tosi, which is what we need, and I think Lupo can be a good sporting director. He has helped orchestrate the climb of Manfredonia to C1 and helped them in a good season this year. I think a good choice by Cairo.

Here's the article from the Toro site:

That sounds like a solid list of friendlies we've got there. I'm interesterd in the ones against Spurs and Club Brugge, particularly, I think that will be a good test of our squad.

Something to ponder.....

.....Cairo has been our saviour by rescuing the club as he did, doing what it took to get back to A, finding a way to keep us there (just by the hairs on our chinny, chin, chins...)....

....but is the act of making himself the face of the club beginning to wear thin?

Any thoughts? I'd be especially interested in the perspective from the ground in Torino.

BTW -- Sorry for the lack of posts lately...but the mercato talk is way over my head.

Konan I think returned to Lecce, he was on loan. Pancaro hasn't been transferred, but I'm guessing he'll be leaving soon since he's not in the squad.

Does anyone know much about Rubin? I know he can play midfield too so I guess he's an attacking RB................

And does anyone know what happened to Schiattarella?

He's actually a left-back, if I'm not mistaken.

I think Schiattarella is still with our Primavera.

Yeah he is definitively a LB, accidently wrote RB

I remember hearing a few times Schiattarella has a lot of potential, hopefully Novellino will give him a chance

Torino 10-0 Malles

Good first friendly of the season, I guess. Against a local side in the town we're training at. In the first half Corino got two, Lazetic and Ventola both got one to make it 4-0 at half time. In the second half, Stellone bagged a brace (including a nice one from outside the area), Cioffi scored off of a corner, Bjelanovic scored off of an assist from Elvis, and Oguro scored before assisting Elvis on the tenth goal of the game. Lanna did play as we started with this formation:

Di Michele-Ventola
Lazetic
Corini---Zanetti---Barone
Lanna-Natali-Di Loreto-Comotto
Sereni

And the second half we fan a 4-3-3:

Bjelanovic-Abbruscato-Stellone
Vailatti----Bottone----Oguro
Rubin---Ogbonna---Franceschini---Cioffi
Fontana

Only players missing were Rosina, who is having a longer vacation (perhaps due to his participation in the Euro U21) and will join the squad on the evening of July 19, and Grella, who is on international duty with Australia in the Asian Cup.

Just a side note, after a slow start, with a loss and a draw, Grella's Australia thumped Thailand 4-0 to advance in second behind Iraq from their group. They will play Japan in Hanoi on 21 July. Grella played in Australia's 1-1 draw with Oman, being subbed in the 62nd minute. He played all of Australia's 1-3 loss to Iraq, and was booked in the game, and played all of the victory over Thailand.

Next up for Toro is another warm-up friendly against a local selection from Alto Adige.
