Azeri NT's new manager

With Berti Vogts' contract expiring at the end of this year, AFFA launched a new search to replace him at the helm of the national team. According to AFFA Secretary General, the list of potential candidates includes both foreign and domestic specialists.

Let's start the discussion off with a little poll.

Who would you like to see as a new head coach of the Azerbaijan NT?

Despite people are saying Gurban Gurbanov is great choice, I think he is not experienced enough for NT.

Agaselim Mirjavadov past his best and long time been out of action so count him out. Boyukagha could've been great choice but he have poor health. Arif Asadov, Vagif Sadygov and Ramiz Mammadov - not achieved anything wel, plus Arif with Vagif got "too defensive minded" football philosophy.

Nazim Suleymanov looks more experienced now, so my choice out of local coaches goes to him.

I really admire Nazim as a player and as a human being, but his track record as a coach is far from stellar. He can be a great assistant coach, or scout coach, but I don't see him as a head coach. At least right now.

I would actually prefer foreign coach. Don't have any names in particular though.

As for foreigners. I want to see foreign coach but not from hyped up, top ranked coaches. Someone with strict attitude.

My vote goes to Lars Lagerbäck. Did great job with Sweden, and now Iceland under him looks prosperous. Furthermore, Scandinavian football is close to ours. They got athletic football with lots of attack.

My second option - Scotland. Everybody knows, Scotland got great coaching school. Walter Smith can be great choice for us. He was very good with Rangers, very good with Scotland, someone with good approach.

My choice

My 3rd choice is Shenol Gunesh. He is always been underrated for me. I always loved teams under his management. Very creative coach.

I was going to put it, but we know it is not going to happen. AFFA already announced that he is leaving.

I'm not getting into this mess again , they will pick who they want not who we need!
And Quidam, since when you abandon your uncle Berti ishleri yaxshi gedmir amma bir az vaxt versez ona EC 2016 aparacaq sizi.
Isn't that what he and you were telling us all this years?

I'm done with our NT, they drive me crazy!
As long as they not beat somebody I know and score at least twice, I'm not interested.
Please let me know when that happens

I'll talk more about Berti after he finishes his term as the head coach. As you said in another thread, it is hard to argue against facts. And whether some people like him or not, but he has the best statistics as a head coach (highest win percentage, most points accumulated). Numbers don't like Granted, he never took us to the next level, but, at least he was better than his predecessors. Simple as that.

one more thing, forget about AFFA and stuff. Who would you picked as a head coach and why? You bash my beloved Berti dayi, but you never give any alternatives. Who do you think can step in and do a better job as a head of the NT?

No one were given opportunities Berti has and no one spend less time doing the job he generously get paid to do. As for the facts we'll go over it when time comes.
If you want my opinion I think Berti should stay, yalancini evinecen govarlar. Should have performance based contract and get fired when he fails (no doubts about that) to deliver!
As for future I won't hold my breath, Berti good for AFFA and for NT players (gormediyi gunleri gorurler) with output close to zero. So, if that what they all liked for the past 5 years who cares what I think, nothing will change.
We should spend less on foreign coaches if we don't have players for them to coach, pay much less to our players to force them change profession or become something others will pay for and invest in the future without phony achievement benchmarks.

I'm done with our NT, they drive me crazy!

Quid, Ras is right. No other coach had Berti's wage and his luxury. I'm sick of our "guest attitude" towards foreigners, and bad mouthing our own coaches.

Berti Vogts is the one, who used to call up awful players like Javid Huseynov and etc. Tell me, don't we hae better player than him? He is the one, who left Araz out of the squad. Not calling decent players like Namik Yusufov

Men demedim domestic or otherwise. For all I care we can bring someone from the moon, stars whatever (if they have football over there of course)
Ozune hormet eden adli-sanli mesgci Azerbaycana gelmemelidi. Yerli, yada on the rise young and hungry foreigner, who doesn't care about pension yet and will be willing to work 20+hrs to prove himself.
Otherwise as I said it's an exercise in futility, there is nothing for me to discuss. No comment

I think Gurbanov is the only domestic option to consider. Ramiz, Nazim, and Agasalim are a thing of the past. I was never impressed with Nazim/Ramiz as a coach, hes a decent 3/4rd place domestic coaches at best, thats about it. I dont buy the arguement of domestics understanding our mentality, because I think thats not an advantage since our player mentality is not suited for anything but cayxanas . A foreign coach will at least have AFFAs full support and not be intimidated/pushed over by our drama queen players. I would prefer a Russian/Turkish coach, but then again that would depend on what options are the on table. Bottom line, I dont want a domestic unless its Gurban, and I dont want a tourist foreign coach with no proven track record that's coached a different asian/african national team every campaign. Being a Dutch football fan, I would vouch for Bert Van Marwijk but thats unrealistic. I also agree with Ras, we need a young and hungry coach that not here as a cash out gig, or the other way is spend real money on a big name coach, thats still relevant and a proven winner at this moment who's still "in it to win it" point of his career rather than a 401k pension collector. I cant think of any those names big names right now, but maybe a Slaven Billic would be a good option. Young, motivating, proven winner, and he's a passionate type of dude, like he still wants to be on the field playing.

Ras, Azerkid

Everything you guys said is nice and well-thought, but there is one little caveat: young, hungry, on the rise coach will not come to Azerbaijan. Being a head coach of a team like Azerbaijan can be a massive career killer. Or we will have to pay him a truckload of dough to entice him. Slaven Bilic, one of those young and hungry types, was making 3 million euros per year at Lokomotiv. He would probably demanded 5 million to work in Azerbaijan. So, those "the young and hungry" types are out of our price range.

The second category is not-so-young and established coaches and that, I think, is a category that AFFA will pay the most attention to. There are a lot of coaches out there who'd be willing to take on a struggling NT for a reasonable payment. But then again, I don't really see anyone who could give us a boost that we need (e.g. Jean Tigana, Luis Fernandez, Christoph Daum, Zico, etc.)

Or trampoline for recognition, career booster.

All point of bringing young will imply not paying top rate for established known name. If we have to pay premium for Azerbaijan I rather pay $3M to "Bilec&Co" than $2M to Berti! Btw going rates on club levels are usually higher than on NT level with few exceptions

So, finding replacement won't be a problem?

We at least 5 years away from making any kind of splash and becoming even pretenders. With limited pool of players and corrupt and clueless (football-wise) administration, there is no reason to overpay for someone who won't be able to make that much difference. All we need today is professional who knows and likes his job.
My question will be why after 5+ years we still "a struggling NT"?! Someone AFFA, Berti, "players" should admit they are complete failure or incompetent bunch of liars!

I'm done with our NT, they drive me crazy!
