Azerbaijan in other sports

This thread will be dedicated to our athletes in other sport branches.
It is no secret that despite not being a big country we have lots of talented sportsmen and athlets and we surely is the nation that loves sport. We have lots of olympic, world and european champions in many different sports, and we sure have lots of reasons to be proud with them. So, let's post all related news about them in this thread as I'm sure this we would be interesting for all of us.

And I start first

Our boxing team won silver medals on the international boxing tournament of famous ukrainian Klitschko brothers in Kyev. Our athletes won 2 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals and took second team place right behind host team of Ukraine.

It's really good to know that we proved once again that we are one of the boxing powerhouses of former Soviet Union alongside with Russia and Ukraine.

Our bodybuilder Anatolu Masimov won a silver medal on the European championship tournament in Romania!
He outperformed most of his opponents, and missed only tenths of points from a first place. Given that he's also a third place winner of the last World Championship now we all expect a gold medal next time!

I follow the IFBB tournaments out of interest, and recognized him when you mentioned his name.

Here's a pic of him:

Looks like he did it the hard way: pure natural sweat, with no hormones or extra juice.

You are absolutely right, bro. Apparently, we are very individualistic nation. We struggle a lot with team sports because each and every azeri thinks he's the chosen one as a result from time to time we go down pretty badly. But when it comes to individual sports (especially power sports) then we know how to bring down the house

Are you also into this whole bodybuilding thing? To be honest, I’m not a big fan of it, but I do visit my gym three times a week for two hours.
And back home, it was a mania several years ago (I don't know how things are now). Every third kid I knew all of a sudden became so obsessed about his body that it was almost impossible not to run into another athletic gym on almost every corner of the city packed up with teens. Once I was shocked when during my last visit home, I overheard two fourth-graders speaking about "right nutritious diet" and how to "develop deltoids"! When I was a fourth-grader, I didn't even knew that “deltoids” even existed!

Hey bro;
Yeah I'm into bodybuilding bigtime, but i have yet to reach my goal.
Everytime I start making gains, I end up with some sort of injury which sets me back a couple of months

I'm doing OK now, but i really am not where i want to be at.
Bodybuildign is a struggle, people dont' understand it, they think you take drugs and puff up like a blow up doll. How I wish that were true...

Man you gotta know exactly what your doing, from your exercizes (form, reps, sets) to your nutrition to your sleep and rest....

You need discipline 24 hours a day to get results. If you're looking to just lift weights for fun thats ok, but if you want real results, it's hard hard hard work...
That's why I can't help but admire bodybuilders and their discipline etc.

I don't think I'll ever reach that level, but I just wanna be like VinDiesel with a 6 pack and more muscular legs (as opposed to his chicken legs), so we'll see if i can ever reach that goal after eating 200 grams of protein a day and working out a different muscle group every other day.

I sometimes wish I started it when I was younger, how I wish I could've started building at 17 or 18...
The fact is, it takes 10 times the effort and dedication to build mass when you hit a certain age because your body just doesn't adapt as fast anymore...

Oh and here's a funny anecdote...
Everytime i mention body building to Turks, i get this response:
'ya ben aaslinda biraz calissam cok kas yaparim, ama fazla buyuk olmak istemiyroum biliyormusun?'

I just laugh at that. They're naive enough to believe that a couple of trips to the gym every now and then will turn you into an arnold

But teh funniest thing was my grandma's reaction a couple of months ago. She saw my biceps and said:
'Abooo kac oglum kac, bu ne boole cok cirkin olmus gari'

Right on, bro! To be honest, I used this excuse myself several times in the past And this bodybuilding thing is so addictive! I started to work out just to get in shape, but as times passed by I realized that I want something more. First I wanted to burn some fat, then I wanted to have 6-pack abs, now I want to reach 200-kilos in bench press. It becomes a bit of an obsession.

Yesterday, Azeri bodybuilders won a regional "Transcaucasian Cup" which was held in Tbilisi, Georgia. The annual tournament brought together participants from three transcaucasian countries – Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia which competed in three categories. Azeri athletes again, as it happened before, outperformed their neighbor opponents and won all three categories and claimed the title of the best bodybuilding team in the region for the fourth consecutive year.

Anatolu Masimov won two gold medals in "up to 85 kg" and "absolute" categories, while Rustam Agayev and Mahmud Savalan won gold and silver medal respectively in "over the 85 kg" category.

Yuh be birader yuhhh!!!
These guys are animals, ohaaa yani!

And they're not heavyweights either.
The day before the tournament, these guys don't drink any water so their body can dry up and show more definition. It's pretty crazy.

Our kids just keep bringing some more good news.

Azeri karate masters won 2 gold and 2 bronze medals at the 40th European karate championship (WKF) which was held in Spanish Santa-Cruz-de Tenerife on May 11-15.
Our kids (an average age of the team is only 21 years old) amazed specialists with their skills and techniques unseen at their age.
Overall, in the team standing Azerbaijan got a 4th place (out of 40 countries), behind Spain, Netherlands and Italy, but above several times champion team of France.

Another good news came from our women field hockey team "Atasport" (yes, guys, we do have a women field hockey team! ), which advanced to the final of the European Champions League!

Quote:
Women’s European Field Hockey Champions League Cup has wrapped up in Denbosh, the Netherlands.

Eight clubs were seeded into two groups. Azerbaijani club “Atasport” defeated their contenders in the “B” group and cruised into the final. “Atasport” secured 3:1 and 1:0 wins over Ukrainian “Kolos” and Germany’s five times champion “Russel Schemer” respectively but drew 2:2 with Kanbo de Madrid. Thus, Atasport booked their place in the final with 7 points.

Dutch club “Denbosh” topped the group “A” by winning “Hightown” (England), “Venegras Grace” (Sweden) and “Volga Telecom” (Russia). Thus, “Denbosh” will face “Atasport” in the final on May 17.

It is worth reminding that “Denbosh” won 26 European champions league titles out of 32 ever held.

While, our team is a clear underdog here, it's worth to mention that this is already a huge success for our team. Our last success in European field hockey is dated back to 80s when our women team won European champions cup, and our men team won European Cup winners Cup.

and here is a little update on what's going on with our athletes

Unfortunately, Atasport lost the final game to "Denbosh", but nevertheless silver medals is already a huge success for our young team.

Elchin Ismailov won a gold medal on European Judo championship in Rotterdam and became the three-time european champion! After this championship, our national team, which consist primarily of youngsters, will participate in another tournament in Moscow. As noted one of the coached of the national team, this is a great opportunity to check our reserves and give a chance to youngsters to prove themselves.

Excellent news again from the world of judo! On European U-17 judo championship which takes place nowadays in Salzburg, Austria our kids won their first medals!

Samir Dadashzadeh won a gold medal in 50 kg category, and Zaur Baghirli won a silver medal in 60kg category!

And I also would like to notice that our U-17 team has already became an absolute team champions in 2004, 2003 and 2001!
