Fenerbahce wants to buy Azeri League team.

According to the today’s issue of turkish newspaper "Fanatik", the president of turkish champions "Fenerbahce" Aziz Yildirim expressed his intentions to buy one of the azeri league teams and use it as a farm club for the turkish football giant.
The newspaper claims that Yildirim has recently visited Azerbaijan and held negotiations with owners of two azeri clubs - "Neftchi" from Baku, and "Khazar" from Lenkoran, concerning a buyout options. The article contains no details but it adds that Aziz Yildirim plans to revisit Azerbaijan in the nearest future to close the deal.

Now, here are my comments. I think it is some media hoax. I have no doubts about Aziz Yildirim's deep pockets, and his managerial talents, but it is really doubtful that either "Neftchi" or "Khazar" are for sale. These are the two richest and most prosperous teams in Azerbaijan right now, and it has to be something really good to make them accept the offer. Being a farm club, even for the club like Fenerbahce isn't really something they've dreamed about. On the other hand it is obvious that there is definitely something going on - last week Galatasaray vice-president Ergun Gursoy visited Azerbaijan and had some meeting with local football officials on topics that has not been disclosed to the media; the president of Besiktas soon can apply for permanent resident status as he is a very frequent guest to Baku (and by the way, he is a very good friend of "Khazar's" president). So, as we can see there is a growing interest from Turkish football functioners for Azeri football, and I think it should result in something in the weeks ahead.

15.02.2005

Aziz Yildirim says that there rumours are false and that he went to Azerbadjan on private reasons.

Maybe you dont know but Aziz Yildirim has a big construction company....and is the main reason he is such a rich guy. His company built the most of our stadium if im not mistaken.

He is also involved in military deals so it could have been that as well....or just a friendly visit with the president!

It will be nice if he buy one of our middle teams, not leaders as Neftchi or Hazar (Lenkoran)

I can't hide my happiness that all these turned out bs. I would appreciate partnership and assistance, but creating any "colony" clubs is not the best thing Aziz Yildirim can do for Azeri football.
