You've Seen the Pictures, Please Meet the Artist

Hello everyone

As we waltz halfway into the second year of XT Photo Contests, do you sometimes wonder about the creators behind all those photos? Where do they learn their skills? What are their hometowns like? Do they ever have trouble getting a good shot?

I do. Hence the existence of this thread. From now through July, we will be joined by a special guest each week. They will tell us about their work, answer (or ask) questions. And we -- we will be *invited* into the world of our guest's art and photography.

Our first guest of honour is a long standing Xtratime member with quick wits and sharp eyes. Her work, much like her posts, is natural and jumps right to the point. My fellow forumers, please join me in welcoming ...

Kat

Hello.
Well, thank you for starting with me…and I have no idea what to say

I hardly dare to call my work as art. I just take moments and try to capture emotions. I do not use photoshop nor have any idea how to use any technology. I do not go out for photohunting nor stage any picture.
My usual tool is my phone with it’s 2 MP camera (maybe I should upgrade it a little). My other tool is Nikon Coolpix (S 640).

I do not have a particular theme nor style, I just shoot everything I see. Unusual, unexpected, funny, weird, beautiful, if I have my phone close, I take it. If it happens nice to look at, even better.

My question for you is

How far would you go to take a good shot? Sit entire day in hailstorm or in mud, break few laws, travel on top of a volcano?

Me, I suppose the most radical thing has been leaning out of window, so I am very safe. :little coward:

I was asked too Kat but I guess my reply back to Punkette wasnt as positive as yours I had doubts of what the heck I could say too

Purely baed on what you have said you seem rather simular to me

As for the question you present, I would love more wet pictures, but I personally prefer to not go out if its raining, but I do enjoy walking in the rain ( I have to already be outside).
I am a fairly patient person but I dont think I could wait around for that perfect moment in regards to a nature shot.
I guess im a low risk, I wanted a picture from the top of a small waterfall looking over the cliff face, I handed the camera to someone else in order to get that shot I wanted

2 questions for you?
Whats the closest to first ever image you have taken that you can share with us XTers?
and
Able to share your personal favourite from your pool?

I am not sure I understand the first question but if i get it right, then there are few pics from Rome, about a decade ago when everything went right and i got shots I really like. But these are not with me right now, maybe at weekend. But besides that, well, one of my first avatars here were quite notorious

Besides that, few recent shots are here

well Ive been on the top of a volcano but that was not just because of the pix. Ive been with friends and we all were very interested in being so close to an active volcano. But we stayed overnight there for the pix, as during the day you only see the ash, while at night you can see the lava.

Otherwise I usually dont have time to wait long for a pic. I always have my cam with me and when I see something nice I take the pic.

Welcome Kat

Nice pics ... where was the railway one taken?

How far d i go for a good shot? I think id go far if had an oportunity, how drastically i dunno as depends on my mood and moment of craziness hehe ... so far i've only been on top of Etna that is not active, but smokes a cigarette from time to time, also love hanging from the boats in a mission to take nice sea/islands/sun combo shot or climbing all over ruins/towers/castles in flip flops, sometimes wondering how i didn't slip/fall till now (well, won't say twice )

Love travelling and capturing moments but sometimes i kinda feel that coz of 'taking pics work' i don't enjoy the places as i maybe should, i mean i do, but i think i would more if i don't have that 'i wanna capture so much' in my head Happens even when i come across to something spontaneously coz i discover 100 more things/angles etc ... instead of just looking at it and enjoying ...
What u think about that?

Els clubs són un negoci, excepte el Barça, que és un sentiment i una passió.

This is my village station, taken about 6 weeks ago. It's renovated now, and that was the last day before it was closed. The station will be removed, so I doubt I'll ever have another reason to go there.

And indeed, since i like to get emotions then most of the times I just ignore camera. And I can't quite understand people, who go on atrip and then see everything just throught lens.

Just checking in and a real-time salut to Kat!

I remember your "notorious" avatar well. And that's a good example of a perfectly composed image -- whether created consciously or unconsciously. I've also liked a later avatar of yours with just the headshot. In fact I mentioned to Boyo that it would be great if someone would coluorize it into a Warhol-esque portrait. (So Boyo did -- and the rest is history )

As for your question. Yes. I take a large portion of my shots while commuting to/from work. Taking pictures of strangers or unfamiliar environments can often be somewhat risky on subways or other public transports. I've been confronted by the authorities but thus far noone has insisted on destroying my camera or deleting files. :knock on wood:

Talk to you later. Carry on!

Alexx made both shots (same bar 9 years apart) and he has a good eye. And indeed, he also did a little Warhol- esque things with some pics.

So far, I am brave enought to make pics of animals without asking a permission, but people are different story.

I remember that picture well. In fact, you do resemble Edie Sedgwick (in Godard's movie "Breathless" in particular), hence the Warhol-esque remark.

As for photographing public places: the New York City police were extremely sensitive about that after 911. Subways, airports, highways, train stations and tracks, bus stations and even the Off-track betting offices run by the City were forbidden sites for picture-taking. They enforced this for approximately 6 months and, reflecting upon the decrease of tourism, lifted the bans.

I did not know what to think when I saw men lining up and going into an engine. By that moment I suppose there were 4 men inside the engine
