Art Books

Do you have a title on art (visual, graphic, architectual, performing/theatrical, digital or multimedia) that you love?

Or hate?

List them here.

I'll start.

LETETRS TO A YOUNG POET by Rilke
A painters and art historians guide book.

THE ROMANTIC REBELLION by Kenneth Clark
If you like Blake, Turner, Fuselli, Gericault, Delacroix and those late 18th and early 19th Century wild men as much as I do, read this.

Susan Sontag ON PHOTOGRAPHY
RIP, wise woman

THE POLITICS OF VISIONS by Linda Nochlin

ABOUT LOOKING by John Berger

CONTENT by Rem Koolhaas
Okay, it has taken me five years to dislike this Dutch architect a tad less. But to be fair, Koolhaas had done a lot to disturb the sometime starchy architectual world and, at the same time, amass wealth. CONTENT, which came out last April, is a case in point. Advice: check it out from the library before purchasing though.

Romanticism by Jean Clay. It is the greatest book on art ever made.
Rites of Spring by Modris Ecksteins. Never saw a link between modernism and the Holocaust? He does and makes his case extremely well, and manages to make that point without condemning Modernism either.

You know the scene it's very hum-drum
And my favorite song's entitled "Boredom"...

SURREALISTS ON ART edited by Lucy Lippard.

This is one item artists still regard as their "bible" and in it, the following passage by the Chilean surrealist Matta (if you're interested in sampling his work, see Che's post here.)

The fact that man thinks he grasps phenomena is a hallucination. the notion that "man is" is in itself a hallucination; manness is nothing but a sickness of apes. Once hallucinations are sufficiently noted, they become what we call myths, and cease to have outside limits. I mean that the native African who believes in certain kinds of, let us say, supernatural voices actually hears such voices; his myth, his hallucination is perhaps no more "unreasonable" than the present day one that every house ought to have electric refridgeration so that pop can be served chilled."

- Matta, "Hellucination," originally published in 1948.
