Ok. One thing I've been wondering, what are all of the things like "Impressionist", "post-impressionist" etc, in terms of painting.

There are loads of them and I wondered if you could explain or point me in the rigth direction to define all of the categories?

PS Bonita, you may want to add a question on ideas for forum description there coz as you can see, before there is one, the one that has the wrong spelling will continue to be there (courtesy of Mr. Balis-of-Steel )

1. I'm a pretty damn fine photographer, I think, and I do sing and dance like nobody's business.
2. Look in the viewfinder and press the button.
3. Oh please, can we do one on the Baroque? Pretty please...?
4. The usual things. Although I must learn how to attach a picture, or they won't be much.
5. Why is Baroque painting (Caravaggio, Reni, Guercino, Poussin...pretty much room XII of the Vatican Piocoteca) so beautiful, while Baroque architecture and sculpture is so damn cheesy (and as examples I point out the Gesu church in Rome, which gave me a bad case of the vapors)?

You know the scene it's very hum-drum
And my favorite song's entitled "Boredom"...

1. Are you currently involved in any forms of visual or performing arts?
Nope in kindergarden and the first years of primary school I was always punished when I handed in a drawing because they thought I was doing it that abd on purpose. It might sound harsh and curel but looking back at those things I must admit those teachers were absolutely right

2. If so, please share your experience and expertise with us.
/

3. What topics would you like to see in this forum?
I'd like to see
(a) A better view on what's happening in contemporary art. Most of the time I like it, but it's not easy to get a good view on "what's happening"
(b) I'd love to know more on the "hidden messages" and symbolism used in more ancient art.

4. And, what would you like to offer in return?
A willing ear and eye

5. Do you have any art questions you would like to answer?
Not for the moment

Hey thanks for your replies.

Balis:

Impressionism and Post-impressionism are terms that are created after the facts, which may be needed by people who quantify or have too much work and not enough time to view other people's work. In reality, all movements in [in this case] the visual arts have neither beginnings nor endings. Take, for instance, Monet was inspired by Charles Francois Daubigny, a Barbizon (1850-60) artist who were one of the people that pioneered painting from nature, or, en pein air, instead of from manuscripts. And Degas, Cezanne, Gauguin the so-called Post-Impressionists were highly influenced by Puvis de Chavannes, a lesser known neo-classical painter [in our times, that is] - while Vincent Van Gogh followed the work of Jean-Francois Millet (the reknowned Barbizon painter) and actually made exact copies of JFM's Gleaner, Autumn: Haystacks and Child's First Steps. [Van Gogh has seen Millet's work at the latter's estate exhibition snd sale]. So, everything leads to everything, and nothing.

I suggest a museum or gallery visit. See and interpret for yourself and check out an artist's early and late works, enjoy yourself. A Book Thread will be posted here shortly, for now, you may be interested in reading Gauguin's journal "Noa Noa."

Neddie:

Check your PM.

Sampdoria:

Penny for your thoughts?

Heather:

Baroque thread's on the way (no, not like that slogan help is on the way...) Oh and yes, can we take a peek of your own photography?

Geert:

Thanks for the eyes, and ears.

Yep, PoMo thread is on the way as well. I'm VERY equipped to have a second go at explicating Jan Farber.

First of all. Congrats to the new forum, and welcome back Bonita as FM

1. Are you currently involved in any forms of visual or performing arts?

No I am not, however I am interested in looking at art, just like Bonita said there is so much art. Not only sculptures and drawings. Alot of things are beautiful and artistic in their own way.

2. If so, please share your experience and expertise with us.

I will offer my oppinion

3. What topics would you like to see in this forum?

Whatever people want to discuss. But, topics about diffrent kind of art, painters and direction/style's is fine with me.

4. And, what would you like to offer in return?

Once again, my oppinion.

5. Do you have any art questions you would like to answer?

What about Architecture?. Buildings is art for me. I'm really fascinated by buildings/Houses and old monuments. What about the 7 wonders of earth and things like Angkor, The Sfinx, Great Wall or Taj Mahal. A long time ago I made a thread for beautiful places on earth where I posted pictures. I think there are loads of beautiful art around the world, wether it is drawings or buildings or something completely diffrent. I think this forum could be great

Oh no not Jan Fabre again :eekani:
No just kidding, I saw a little sculpture of him (a turtle) a couple of days ago. Certainly with knowing the story, I really liked it.

Got anything on Luc Tuyman?

Bonita knows I hate impressionist art. This is unfortunate being so close to the Art Institute of Chicago.

Anyone want to discuss medieval iconography?

Very good.

as you may or maynot know, my Name is Che.

I went to school for fine arts & Art history.
As an undergrade I earned the respect of the faculty & Prof and was given a studio to share with the graduate program.

I was strong influenced as a child by the works of Picasso and into my teens Matisse. As I started my studies I was strongly influenced by the Mexican Muralist and the new york school who were influenced by the surrealist, dadaist and most of all Marcel Duchamp.

In my early years back in the 80's I did painting and studies on drunks/alcholics with many of my close friends as inspirations.

I was also strong influenced by Jazz, under ground college radio stations and living the life of a angry young man.

Those day are just a flickering memory, I would like to start painting again but those of you who are familure with oil paints know that a studio space is very much needed....

someday I will return

Glad to see you here, Che and thank you for your thoughtful post.

Where do you live now? If it's NYC, the nearest thing to a decent studio [with decent rent] is, sadly, in our minds But I hope you will pick up from where you've left off. You know, once you got biten by art, the duende never leaves.

I taught a month-long seminar at the San Francisco Art Institute three years ago and was lucky enough to spend time in their old wing which has a major Diego Rivera mural [commissioned in 1931] I remembered an elderly colleague told me that in the 1950s, artists, students and local beatniks would assemble at the main drawing studio at SFAI, with nude models swinging from the light fixtures and Rivera's mural gazing down at them. Ha. Nowadays students lugged in $10000 video cameras and asked the teacher how to turn the power switch on.

Surely you have seen Duchamp's Etant DonnÚs at the Philadelphia Museum?

Perhaps sometime in the near future, we can see some images of your work?

All the best!

Am I currently involved? Well, I am married to an artist, does that count?

Literally all the pictures hanging in the house are the work of my wife, tons of black and whites raging from landsacpings, to our children and some stills. My favorite is of a door in Santiago de Compostela and a picture of a sonwy Venezia.

She also paints and some of her work is also in the house. My introduction to art has been through her. I find great relaxation to watch her paint and its one of my favorite past times.

Geert:

Luc Tuyman has a good show last September at Tate Modern. More on him here shortly.

Che:

Re Etant DonnÚs, there's a book with the same title authored by Duchamp, you will like it, I promise.

Humbird:

Disagree with you on the AIC as an Impressionist Institute. More about that later.

barša:

Not too many people have the luxury to surround themselves with art. You're very lucky.
