G'day, Sampdoria. Searching around the cellar and attic of the Bookstore, I have found the following threads and thought you may be interested to read about what others have posted on the topic of art.

Art Thread number 2

On your topic, allow me to paraphrase myself: I think that one must understand the reason why a person creates before attempting to discredit his/her motives. Many of us are educated to accept "rational" discourse but often overlook the aims and purpose of an artist.

For those of us who have spent years mastering, to quote Dylan Thomas, this "sullen craft," we understand the difference between "attention getting" and a lifetime of lonely pursuit. I hope, in a humble way, being a good art historian may assist in conveying to the world why people create -- and why art is an important act in our [so very troubled] times.

Hallelujah, amen.

Art is in the eye of the beholder, no? I have several painting adorning the walls of my living room. They may not be so called 'high art', may not sell for small fortunes, but to me they are more precious than any work by any famous artist, because they were painted by a dear friend and were gifts from her to me. That is art.

good idea, this is something that I have mentioned as well and it's in the works

Art is the expression of feelings, opinions and both factual and imaginary scenes through visual and auditorial means with the purpose of providing aesthetic and/or mental pleasure.

genreal definition, some art is to provoke and to antagonize.

The advant garde took steps to outrage and even artist today like Andres
Serrano pushes the limits on what is acceptable to what is profane.

Art has no definition as artist have tried to break up the concepts of art in the traditional sense.

When I was a angry young man I was a starving painter!

If you can be patient, I will create a thread when the time is right.

I think we all have painters and styles that we all like.

so each one can bring his or her own view.

I personally like post modern art but other may like different

Wouldn't this fall under the general concept of "mental pleasure"?

My definition is boring, but accurate.

general concept but mental pleasure is what I had questioned.

If you ever study some of the minimalist than the idea of mental pleasure is a stretch.

ofcourse that is the example question, and is an example of what i mean. And ofcourse you would post an image of the artwork.

That is because your concept of mental pleasure is very narrow. Art that is meant to shock, antagonise, provoke, outrage and so on offers the mental pleasure, or even challenge, of being shocked, antagonised, provoked, outraged and so on. Mental pleasure is not merely something that produces an "aw, that's nice" feeling. The later usually falls under the concept of aesthetic pleasure anyway.

Furthermore, each work of art offers mental pleasure to it's creator. So no piece of art is done without producing some kind of mental pleasure.

Mental pleasure covers everything you mentioned. Therefore, my definition is pretty accurate.
