Very few people outside of Atlético really understand what Fernando Torres means to the club (even if they claim to know and then become surprised when 45,000 people turn up for his presentation) and what it really means for him to play for a competetive Atlético. His biggest dream growing up as a kid and representing the club during all the years of institutional crisis (post-relegation in 2000 all the way until he left for Liverpool) was to play in a competetive side and that's something he's never had the opportunity to do..before the last month. He's got one task left in his career after winning the World Cup, European Championships, Champions League and Europa League: to win with Atlético Madrid. Had he been able to do so from the beginning, he never would've left in the first place. The reason why Atleti-fans love him is because he's an Atleti-fan playing for his club. Unlike for an example Kun(t) who begged on his bare knees when Madrid came knocking on the door.
The main problem with modern media (and especially English) is that they're all hung up on headlines (which sells) instead of actually investigating the real reasons why he's not been the same since leaving Liverpool. They also have the biggest breakthrough. The modern game is so centered around money (everyone wants to spend €100 million every window without having a plan on how to do it) and the next big story that it's become ridicolous.
Torres is a player with fantastic physical attributes (the best that Profe Ortega has seen with over 30 years of experience in the business) and he's one of very, very few players in Atleti's price range who can provide the same directness as Diego Costa did last season. He's got the same hierarchy in the dressing room as he did before he left the club in 2007 with the exception of him getting a new role. A role where everything doesn't go through him like it did back in the day, a role where Torres is just another piece in a puzzle. A potentially very good piece if used correctly.
