Liga BBVA | J7 | Atlético de Madrid vs Sevilla FC

Atlético is on top of their group in UEFA Europa League despite a flat performance against Rennes where the team managed to survive the pressure set up by the French by equalizing through Juanfran in the dying minutes. Focus is now shifting; Sevilla is visiting the capital for the first big game of the season at Vicente Calderón. Both teams have been very good defensively (despite the way Atlético fared at Camp Nou) and have allowed few goals between them in general. Sevilla have strengthened their defence with Emir Spahić during the summer and he was one of Ligue 1's best defenders with his sometimes brutal approach. He's been leading their defence by example thus far while Atlético's relied heavily on playing a possession game thus far.

Courtois
Sílvio - Miranda - Domínguez - Filipe Luís
Tiago - Mario - Diego
Reyes - Falcao - Arda

The biggest positive for Atlético is that Sílvio is back from his muscle injury that's kept him out of action for a while now. He'll be starting the game. Manzano's decided to keep Perea out of the squad after his performance against Rennes where they just kept doing whatever they wanted to him by forcing him into individual misstakes. Pizzi, Pulido, Koke, Paulo Assunção and Asenjo are the other players who didn't make the squad.

Javi Varas
Cáceres - Spahić - Alexis - Navarro
Jesús Navas - Campaña - Medel - Perotti
Manu del Moral
Kanouté

Sevilla have travelled with 19 players to Madrid. The only players missing for this game are Julién Escudé and Piotr Trochowski, they're both suspended after picking up red cards home to Valencia in a dirty game where Sevilla did their best to irritate their opponent..and eventually they'd succeed. Tom De Mul is finally back in the squad after a long absence but he'll most likely not be playing, maybe a cameo appearence towards the end. Negerdo is included in the list but probably won't be ready to play as he picked up a injury during training this week while Rakitić have just come back from one of many injuries since May. That'll most likely see the introduction of 18-year old José Campaña who's one of their biggest talents and the reason why they aborted Morgan Amalfitano's transfer from Lorient.

Three points, vital.

Sevilla's strategy is obviously to destroy our tempo and fluidity of play with silly fouls all over the pitch. I really dislike Undiano Mallenco because his bar is always set low when it comes to blowing his whistle or handing out bookings. He's also contributing to destroying the tempo of this game by constantly blowing his whistle. Atlético have been controling the game from the first minute and we should've been up at least a goal or two, unfortunately Reyes missed a sitter and Sevilla have got away with a few other situations. These situations need to be converted into goals because we won't be able to continue pressing this well for 90 minutes. Our fullbacks are playing well and that's why we're able to attack as much too, it's ridicolous how the board can trust Perea as a right-back..As for the second half; I'd try to up the tempo furthermore because the team will need it and hopefully, we'll put away our chances.

Definitely two points lost..but remember, it could've been zero points without Courtois brilliant goalkeeping. This game was similiar to the one against Osasuna where Atlético had more possession, at least in the first half, created enough chances to finish off their opponent but just couldn't do it. Reyes should've definitely scored in the first half, that was a poor miss, the same goes for Diego who had a great chance just outside their penalty area, a shame Tiago and him couldn't get along. Then came Courtois; great save when Manu del Moral came 1-on-1 with him, perfect timing to get out, if you guys watch it closer, you'll notice that he sprints out of his goal when Manu gets a bad touch. Eventually he'd save it, well done.

Falcao had his chances today but didn't convert them. The first when Reyes set him up should've definitely been steered into the back of the net, it isn't easy, but that's what you expect when you pay that sort of money for him, has to be a goal. The second is a brilliant save by Javi Varas though, the angle wasn't the best either, he got off a good shot on goal, it was just that Varas' save was better. Salvio with a solid cameo appearence again.

A real shame we couldn't put them off. Frustrating and dissapointing, like always when you don't win.

Also many a times Diego plays more in the half line than in the opponent' half. This happened in Rennes match and then this one. Maybe Manzano was not letting his players play too much up because of the threat of counters that these teams have but still we could have done a bit better when pressing. Also this means Falcao drifts out of the opponents penalty box and becomes a lesser threat.

Courtois saved Atleti from disaster, shocking give away of the ball by Suarez I think. Perhaps his hair got in his eyes, he should get a haircut.

Wasted chances by Reyes and Falcao. Atleti's strongest lineup for many games, shame they couldn't put Sevilla away.
