Liga BBVA | J4 | Atlético de Madrid vs Racing Santander

VICENTE CALDERÓN
Sunday 18 September 2011
18:00 CET

Three straight home games at Vicente Calderón in six days; Celtic, Racing and Sporting. The schedule is pretty hectic right now and the coaching staff with Manzano at the helm is looking to help the players recover in time after each and every one of those. Atlético opened with three points in Europa League after beating Celtic rather comfortably with 2-0. The biggest positive are the three points the team earned the fact that both Falcao-Diego scored the goals. This game against Racing is also very important since the team has to start picking up points in the league, so far they've only managed to get a single point from six possible. Atlético's had 39 attempts on goal and still not been able to score a single goal in 180 minutes of play. Certain areas of the squad are still under construction, we're looking to play some good football and the late arrivals have played their part thus far.

Racing's currently being managed by Héctor Cúper who knocked out Atléti in Europa League with Aris before getting fired by the Greeks. The team is playing their regular 4-2-3-1-formation where they're looking to defend first and foremost, then they'll try to hit the opponent on the counter attack..so this is yet another game where Atlético will dominate possession and probably get frustrated by their opponents. That's why it's so important to have both Sílvio and Filipe Luís back after being rested by Manzano. The fullbacks are vital in a 4-3-3 and it was so obvious in our game against Celtic, perhaps the best comparsion is the one between the pre-season games against Granada-Beşiktaş and the away game against Vitória Guimarães.

Squad news
Sílvio and Godín won't be participating in this game. They've both got muscular problems..meanwhile, Antonio López, Koke, Paulo Assunção and Asenjo are all left out of the squad. The rest are being called up.

Previous meetings with Racing
Atlético have had a hard time against Racing in the past two years; 2009-2010 produced a 1-1-draw where the guests played with ten men on the pitch for a long period of time. Then the goalless draw last season where the players simply couldn't score a goal and where Toño had a fantastic game. That being said, Racing haven't won a single game in Madrid since 2002-2003 when Atlético returned to the top flight. Atléti have also won four games during that period with the best two coming in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 where Racing got absolutely smashed by Forlán-Agüero-Simão.

I'll be watching the second half, I hope Arda plays the full game on the left flank.

Happy to see Atletico back on its feet. Hopefully they can make use for some entertaining football against the top sides. Falcao and Turan have always been known as good players. Good luck.

FT 4-0. We played well throughout the game with the defence not much troubled by Racing.

Arda was good and showed in his 2 assists with the first being a very good one. Filipe and Perea provided good support as wing backs and it was surprising to see Perea quite up the pitch and his crosses were not too bad either.

For the first time in a long time, Atlético Madrid actually have midfielders that know how to play the ball, which is something new since you came back to Primera.

Atlético always used to play with (very good) strikers and wingers, always forgetting the creative midfield. Now Diego, Turan, Mario Suarez and Tiago have good creative concepts.
