things are immensely better just in my lifetime especially in medical advancements where people would have died even in the 1970's are now being routinely saved.

1000% better.

fall of communism; internet; medical advancements; travelling options; economic possibilities; tolerance and liberal life (well, not everywhere, but where I live)

only minus point might be the state of my national team

Vastly improved in most respects. The UK is infinitely better off, although I could still gripe about a few things.

Glen: "That last post of Bastin's is just too authoritative to argue against."

gOD: "It scares the f*ck out of me but I'm with Bastin here."

Cacěni: "Ah, there you go using that absurd über-memory of your's...not fair."

Boyo: "Even when it comes to rap, Bastin is an authority."

Attila_the_Nun: "A most respected scion of Misty Albion, the illustious Bastin - the redoubtable defender of all our noble traditions."

They'd go outside, play ball, get into mischief, get hurt, hunt cueca... play. Yep, it's true.

I think people are more alienated, angry/stressed and scared. When I was a kid we used to leave the front door open at night because there was no air conditioning and it was a rough part of Hamilton we lived in. That would be unthinkable today in the safest areas, nevermind rough parts of Hamilton.

It's funny how we measure progress. Most of us feel less safe in our own homes and communities yet we're somehow better off because of the internet.

Agree on the first part. Nowadays everyone has a cellphone but there are more lonely people.

We're better off materially, and in terms of standard of living. But it wouldn't hurt to slow down. The thing is IVO, lots of people born later don't even notice the things you talk about - to them it's just the way things are.

As for the question, some places in the world have got better, some worse.

Information overkill, warps perception. We're safer from violent crime today than we have ever been. Though many of us don't feel that way, the information that leads to our over active paranoia is one of the key reasons why.

I disagree with that. In my opinion, the more information someone has, the better off he is if he handles it correctly. If he doesn't - I agree, but then, such people would always be socially unfunctional, even without tons of information.

My immediate environment is much less safer and trustworthy than when I was growing up. Back then flowers demarcated our compound from that of our neighbours, my dad could punish the neighbours kids when they went wrong and the reverse was also the case...

Now a concrete fence seperates me from my neighbour, and I can't talk to his kids...

Also I sleep with one eye open, if you get what I mean...

Some people think life is black
Other's think life is white
We all know it's black and white
