Seven civilization blocs?

http://www.brothersjudd.com/index.cf...il/book_id/342

Samuel P. Huntington, who is a great professor of political science at Harvard University breaks the world up into seven separate competing civilizations.

Western
Chinese
Japanese
Hindu
Islamic
Orthodox
Latin American

He has been insisted on it.
What do you think of his idea?

He earns a "moron" title by putting "islamic" as one block. The inherent difference between Islamis on Marocco, Turkey, Iran, Malaysia and London is staggering. Or does he just mean that if everyone converts then Islam won? Huh?

Uh Wait, what Civilization does 60 million Thai belong too? Phillipines? Big parts of Africa?

Latin America? A separate civilization from the Western one? Huh?
And the Orthodox are so different as well? Huh? Maybe in the 14th century, but now?
So Greece is not part of Western civilization?

...And Another Prof. would probably rank them after religion and a third by class or income. I don't think his list makes any justice, Israel and several Orthodox European countries, live pretty much like Western Europeans do., But apart from religion there are Buddhists and even Muslims with a secular lifestyle too. Life in Istanbul, Shanghai or Jakarta isn't that diffrent from life in the West. Religion isn't a barrier for a certain lifestyle. There would be a much better list if they made it by lifestyle or culture.

What does he mean by competeing anyway? Are the civilizations he excludes non-competitive?

I would divide it this way:

- Western (including Israel, Latin America, Orthodox Europe and The Philippines)
- Eastern Asian (China, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, etc...)
- Hindu (mostly India)
- Islamic (Arabic, Turkic, Malay, Indian and Persian are the main subcivs)
- African
- Others (Pacific Rim Islands, etc...)

But obviously they overlap each other so for practical purposes it`s not so easy to classify them.

Say what you will, but the majority of the Arab nations have pretty close ties with one another (oil, language, culture, religion, Israel-hating) The obvious exceptions are the "rogue states" which tend to do things on their own terms. They are the only kind who arent included in this list. Including Iran.

But I do see your point regarding Turkey, who have political/economic obligations to Europe but cultural ties with the middle-east, and Malaysia and Indonesia, especially the former, who have developed a different sort of culture.

ChxMx, Africa has a way to go before they can successfully "compete" per se with other civilizations. At least from the frame that Sammy P. Hunt is looking at it from. Africa has a lot of social problems to deal with overall before their nations can develop "competitiveness", at least from an economic and standard-of-living perspective.

Anywho, speaking of blocs, I find the idea of the Nine Nations of North America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_Na..._North_America) a lot more interesting...

"Say what I will"? If he had said "Arabic nations" he had a point about them, otherwise it is hyperbole. Pakistani/Indians, SEA muslims, Sub-Sharan muslims and such can't be in the same and seen in numbers they exceed the Arabic muslims.

OMG some are actually debating this bullshite.

Africa isn't a civilization haha, man people never change, there was once a time where people were in famine and lived like savages in places like Britain when African Kings had Jews as their slaves, now its the other way round, all this should teach us that we are all the same but guys like this professor come along once in a while thinking they are enlightened, its a joke, I know smarter homeless people than alot of these guys who finish years of expensive schooling when they are near 30.

Your right. Aside from Pakistan however, none of the other groups you mentioned have a strong enough presence, either in terms of political/economic/social sway to be considered a vital part of any of the groups. Theyre just there.

I think you made a mistake in the very begining.
In the book Africa is listed as a civilization...so the comotion caused by this typo can stop.

The civilizations listed in the book are:

Western - Canada, USA, and the European Union, plus Australia and Polynesia
Latin-American - Southern and Central America plus the islands in the Gulf of Mexico
African - Central and Southern Africa
Islamic - North Africa plus the Middle East and Indonesea
Chinese - China minus Tibet
Hindi - India and Bangladesh
Orthodox - former USSR and the Balkans
Buddhist - Mongolia and Tibet
Jappaneese - Japan
