17th october 1961. shame day of france.

17th october 1961, 30 000 algerians manifested peacefully in the streets of paris.
the police repression has been terrible. many of those algerians (we don't know exactly the number because the government censorship and the lack of reaction of the medias of this time) have been killed, beaten, expulsed, jailed.

i didn't find out english site which relate this event (if someone find it...)

i gonna try to explain what was the situation.
1961. this is almost the end of the algerian war. de gaulle is dealing with the FLN front de libération nationale (algerian resistance) the end of the war and the independance of algeria.
during the month above the 17th october 1961, the FLN conducted action in paris, killing 22 cops. french police answered by molesting algerians workers in france. humilation and atrocities toward the algerians have been commited from police and also milices.
the 15th october, the préfet of paris maurice papon instaured a "couvre feu" no algerians must go out in the streets the night.
pushed by the FLN, 30 000 algerians went in the streets of paris in prostestion.
and then, it has been a night of horror. the police had the white card to stop the manifestation.

since 2 weeks, a movie about what it has been one of the most censored events of french history is shown on french tv.
the movie is called "nuit noire". strong movie.

I strictly have nothing to say but I want that comes out.

Thanks for posting the name of that film Mali, I'm going to try and get my hands on it. I read when doing my A-level, a very powerful French book on the relationship between the State and Algerian immigrants during the Algerian war of independence called Elise or la vraie vie by Claire Etcherelli and is a fictionalised novel of her actual experiences. Try and track it down to read, it's very good.

i didn't read the book, but i have seen the movie :

http://imdb.com/title/tt0066618/

nothing have changed since this time, except that the young french with algerian roots do nomore stand the discrimation. what is going on in france today is the flagrant proof.

I strictly have nothing to say but I want that comes out.

I didn't realise they had made the book into a film. You should check the book out, it is very good (well what I could understand in my primative French )

"17th october 1961. shame day of france "

Funny title for a thread. But shouldn't it be "one of the millions of shame days of France? "

But then again, some people have no shame.

of course your title would also fit to any colonialisator countries. i just wanted to point out news of a special day which has been completly censored. i wanted to talk about people which have been humiliated and still can't get reconization despite what they have done for france (i'm thinking to the arkies).

yes, it's sad to see those people without life perpectives. leaving their own country for what they think the best and finally experimenting the worst.

problem existed, but he put oil on the fire by using
dangerous language and challenging the youth to see who
is tougher and who can last the fight.

He is using human suffering as an election tool and that
is despicable. My friend who is from Marseille told me
the French police under Sarkozy have become like a third
world country police, constantly asking for ID and harassing
minorities and immigrants for 2 years.

Sooner or later people were bound to fight back and
try to get their dignity back

Sarkozy is the real "scum"
you're friend from marseille is right. it was already the case before sarkozy, but it's getting worse since sarkozy is minister.

generally the towns or communes which are ruled by lefty mayors do have less prob because they take care more about defavorited areas.
i watched several tv news from different countries asking why this violence, the answer is simple : sarkozy.

funny, they just talked about marseille in the news.
they interviewed the people in the banlieues. and all of them answered : "why would i burn the car of my neighbours?"
what is quite clear is that in marseille there is a lot of educative associations.
