Best Castle in the world?

Although I'm sure this won't raise the Luton v Watford hooligan stand off that Attila craves, I have been meaning to post this since the weekend (when I went up to Warwick Castle).

What's your favourite castle?

I'm going for what T.E. Lawrence called the "finest castle in the world", the Krak des Chevaliers in Syria which stole my heart away from Warwick Castle which up until that point had been my pinacle.

Although Warwick remains my second (bottom picture)

Neuschwanstein in Germany is the flashiest.

But I hear the most outstanding castle in the world, bar none, is Castle Bastin in Hertfordshire.

I have many favourites, including this one: Just up river from Bratislava, where the Danube meets the Morava, is the old Castle at Devín. Not just for the castle, but for the view of the meeting point of the two rivers. The far banks of the rivers are in Austria, the near banks are in Slovakia
I took these pics:

The problem with most of these castles is that they're not really castles at all. They're palaces, country manors, or 17th Century aristocrats' wet dreams, but only two (Krak des Chevaliers and Warwick) are true castles, intended to defend against attackers.

Many of the world's best true castles are in Wales:
Caernarfon

Caerphilly

Then, there are those, like Harlech, Raglan, and Conwy, that were incredible in their day, but now lie in ruins. Beumaris would have been one of the most heavily defended castles in the world, but was left half-completed. Wales has but one man to thank for all of those castles: King Edward I.

I wish that I could. As with all good castles, Castle Bastin and Bastin House are both shrouded by an impenetrable mist all year round.

.
Ahem!
Devín is also a true castle, guarding one of the most important parts of Europe - the eastern end of the Moravian Gap, the south-north passage in Europe between the Alps and the Carpathians.

Another of my favourite proper castles: Bratislava, former home of the Queen of Hungary

I find this old Tutonic Order castle in Poland (Malbork) interesting, I guess cause of the colour (it's all red - kind of unusual):

Also this one (also Teutonic) in Bran (Romania):

My fav castle in "the old country": Golubac (golubatz), on the Danube on the Serbian-Romanian border, in the Djerdap gorge (the Iron Gates, where the Tabula Traiana is located).

It's all in ruins now, what a shame

Castelo dos Mouros is pretty cool too. Dom Afonso Henriques did well to conquer, considering it is right on top of a cliff.

You have to pay 1 Euro to get in there now

Don't worry.... it only seems kinky the first time.

Well, it was formerly the former home of the Queen of Hungary. The old castle was destroyed, and rebuilt by the Soviets.

Apologies; I ignored your castle on the grounds that the merging of the Morava and the Danube looked more impressive.
