Nobel Peace Price 2005

The committe has chosen to award Mohammed ElBaradei and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) with the Nobel Peace Price 2005. It's no coincidence that this happens 60 years after the inhuman disgrace of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and in a time where the IAEA and non-prolifiration treaty is under immense pressure.

I think Bush and Rumsfeld deserve the award just as much. After all, they eliminated Saddam's WMD threat, no?

Fact is, the Nobel comittee is running out of people suitable for this award. ElBaradei is simply doing his job, and not on an exceptional level either. Is that what it has come down to?

Are they running out of candidates? Yes definitely. Well known candidates that is. If Bono is one of the nominees, you have a problem

Still, the price has always been a award that also has a message and this one is clear. In a time where the IAEA and the entire system in which we deal with nuclear arms, is under enormous pressure (due to the Iran situation) a small push in the back as this one, has it importance. On top of that ElBaradei's problems with the US, who lobbied hard to get him out because he was to critical for them, makes that he looks impartial, which is always good.

You say, "that is just doing your job" and you're probably right. Still, he does it and looking at the enormous number of people who back down to pressure, it maybe isn't as simple as you may think.

We can bomb the world to pieces, but we can't bomb it into peace!

Fair enough - I'm not saying ElBaradei is corrupt or something (though you never know with these UN guys). I just think the Nobel prize should be reserved for someone exceptional. Of course it is a politicised pick.

Better him than Bono anyway. If that jumped up prick won the prize we would never hear the end of it and I dislike him already too much to bear with it.

I agree with what AMO said. These days we see no, Gandhi's, Luther King's or Mandela's. This years winner may have done a good job but he's nothing exceptional, Hence I had never heard of him before, Lugar and Nunn should have won IMO. But Atleast he's better then last years winner Wanghari Maathai that said that "The HIV virus was the product of bio-engineering, and then released in Africa by unidentified Western scientists as a weapon of mass destruction to "punish Blacks." Not the word's of a peace price winner...

He should have been awarded the Nobel Peace price of 1948, but when he died it was never given out.

I'm just thanking the deity I don't beleive in that Bono didn't win. That would have been an extreme case of star****ing, for sure. But the resulting self-satisfaction COULD have made the Three Gorges Dam uneccessary by runing the 3rd world's power plants for years, if self-sastisfaction could be a power source. If it could, Hollywood would need no ConEd or PG&E...
As for the guy what did, you cannot have a big name every year and you probably shouldn't, since common knowledge is such a solipsistic thing (today's obvious choice so often turns out to be co-opted by power, in re Allard Lowenstein et al.). An institutional choice, really. They do that quite often. It gives some public aid and comfort to a group which may need it. Best was when AFSC/FSC won, but many worthies are still to be recognized.
I was happy that the doctor who proved Ulcers are caused not by stress but by a virus won for Medicine. Thus went another case of common knowledge, which people should remember in the case of Maathai's statement. How do you know what you know? Really?

You know the scene it's very hum-drum
And my favorite song's entitled "Boredom"...
