President elections in Poland

So president elections are upcoming ... after Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz, candidate of left side, withdraw from elections - 2 main candidats are Donald Tusk (from Platforma Obywatelska - Citizenship Platform) and Lech Kaczyński (from Prawo i Sprawiedliwość - Law and Justice). Both are from right side. But I think both aren't good people for representing Poland ... they even don't know English :rollani: Another candidat from left side - Marek Borowski (from SdPL - Polish Social-Demcracy). would be good but not many people vote for him, because main left party - SLD, don't want to give him support :irritate: .

That's easy: Tusk all the way. From what I can tell, Poland has one of the very few truly liberal major parties in the world, in the Civic Platform.

If for no other reason, I would oppose the election of Kaczyński simply on the grounds that the Kaczyńskis, together, would threaten the (hitherto) separation of the branches of government. Nonetheless, there are lots of other reasons: Introducing a flat tax, giving monetary policy to the National Bank, restricting trade unions, reforming the education system, and instituting democratic constitutional reforms.

How on earth can you know all these things about Poland, Bastin? I'm genuinely curious.

Lots of reasons. For starters, I always take a keen interest in elections. Then, there are reasons for this one being important, both to the fate of Europe and to the fate of the UK.

These elections (parliamentary and the upcoming Presidential election) are key moments in the transition of Central Europe, with the final defeat of the socialist movement in Central Europe's largest country.

Moreover, if the Civic Platform win, we could see the introduction of a flat tax in a major economy; Poland would be the second largest country, after Russia, with one. There is a large body that supports the introduction of one in the UK, led by the unlikely allies of the Economist and the Sun. Any change in Poland could push the UK, or probably the Republic of Ireland first, towards one.

Tusk won 1st round, but he's in veeeeerby bad situation. In pre-voting he had 48 % of votes, and Lech Kaczyński about 20 %.
Now Tusk won 36 % and Kaczyński 33 %. Attacks of Zbigniew Ziobro - leader of election-stuff of Kaczyński, are giving results ...

Big astonishment - Andrzej Lepper won 15 % of votes - very good result. about 10 % for Marek Borowski.
Kaczyński is very experienced polititian, while Tusk didn't held any function, he wasn't even in governmant, and his party, Liberal-Democratic Congress, falled down after 2 years, so he joined Civic Platform !!!!
BTW public speaking is big problem of them both.

Kaczynski made now big mistake. Man from his election stuff said that grandfather of Tusk was a soldier of Wermaht, and after short time it appeared as a lie :rollani:
Now in polls Tusk has 56 % of votes and Kaczynski 44 %.

I hope that, Donald Tusk and Civic Platform wins. From what I've been reading they seem to be the better of the two, afterall he's a true Liberal. The Kaczyński's seem to be more sceptic about Eu too.

What do Poles think of the election, would Tusk's policies benefit Poland?.

Kurski's statement was moronic. Surely, if rumours were abound (which I'd never heard; I'm not sure about Poles), the Kaczyński campaign should have let them do its damage without mentioning it.

One important issue on which I've heard absolutely nothing is Belarus. As possible Presidents, shouldn't the candidates be talking about the Polonia, particularly across the border? Or is it just a matter of it not coming through in the US-UK-EU-centric media?

Kurski is fired from election stuff and party ... but now it's too late ...

Yes, you're right. Maybe both candidates understand that in this moment they don't have big chances to change something on Belarus ... Belka called up Angelika Borys as a new director of Belorussian Union of Poles, but it was meaningless cos it was obvious Lukashenko won't accept it. We can only make connections with Russia worse

Exit polls are giving Kaczyński a victory by 52.8% to Tusk's 47.2%. It's still well within the margin of error, but the trend is for Law and Justice to improve on exit polls in the final result.

Our parliament is a joke. On first session of parlament after 4 minutes Law and Justice asked from 1,5 hour of break :dielaugh:
Law and Justice said also they will make government without Civic Platform even without alliance with any other party I expected it but not so quick

If you think you have problems, you ain't seen nothin' yet. John Prescott's too important for our House of Commons, so he got ickle Geoff Hoon to step into the PM's shoes today.

Is former Polish President and Arsenal supporter Kwasniewski still thinking of running for UN SecGen?

Daily Telegraph 27th March 1996...

"During his recent visit to London, the Foreign Office inquired whether there was any extra-curricular activity Mr Kwasniewski might enjoy. He replied that he wanted to see the Gunners at Highbuty.
"The FO pointed out that Arsenal were playing away. How about Chelsea? Employing some of the more robust expressions he picked up in Britain, the president declared that no self-respecting Arsenal fan would be remotely interested in watching Chelsea."
