Odd historical coincidences?

Uyless Grant and Robert E. Lee were two army cadets at the Army academy in the US in their 20's. Mr. Grant fell off his horse and was knocked out and was drowning in a small pool of water. Robert E. Lee saved his life.

The coincidence? Grant defeated Lee's army as the North won the Civil War against the South. These two great Generals were the commanders of the Southern and Northern armies respectively.

I believe Abraham Lincoln's child was saved by a guy whose last name was Booth. The coincidence? John Wilkes Booth assinated Lincoln while his second cousin saved Linsoln's kid 20 years prior.

Anyone got erie things like this in history?

This never happened. Lee graduated West Point in 1829 (when Grant was only 7 years old) and Grant graduated in 1843. There was a 15 year age difference between the two men. They were not cadets together.

Besides, Grant never fell off a horse in his life! He was the best horseman ever to attend the Academy, which was the reason that the U.S. Army sent him to artillery instead of cavalry, in it's infinite wisdom.

You sure I pretty sure i heard that Lee saved Grants life. I saw it in a History channel thing.

And hey grant was a big boozer. So i'm sure he was drinking and riding a horse.

It didn't happen.

I could debate for hours about this topic.

I bet you didn't know that... (I received it in mail some time ago)

Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.

Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.

Both wives lost a child while living in the White House.

Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.

Both Presidents were shot in the head.

Now it gets really weird.

Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy.

Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln.

Both were assassinated by Southerners.

Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson.

Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808

Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.

John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839. Lee Harvey
Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.

Both assassins were known by their three names.

Both names are composed of fifteen letters.

Now hang on to your seat.

Lincoln was shot at the theater named "Ford."
Kennedy was shot in a car called "Lincoln" made by "Ford."

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.

And here's the "kicker":

A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland.
A week before Kennedy was shot, he was with Marilyn Monroe.

AND...

Lincoln was shot in a theater and the assassin ran to a warehouse.....
Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and the assassin ran to a theater...

Maybe it's not a real coincidence, but did you know that at one point in the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln offered the command of the Union forces to Giuseppe Garibaldi, unifier of Italy?

I've heard the Lincoln/Kennedy one dozens of times. Some of it is spooky, but much of it is wrong.

There's no evidence of that.

Booth was killed in a firefight with the army.

The traditional line is "A week before Kennedy was shot, he was in Marilyn Monroe". That, though, would make him a very disturbed man. Marilyn Monroe died in 1962, over a year before JFK was shot.

Actually, Booth was killed in a barn, not a warehouse. More to the point, that was two weeks after killing Lincoln, so he hardly 'ran'.

Et cetera.

EDIT: Actually I've heard about it before too Quite Interseting, but Garibaldi declined his offer, but to honor him, the 39th New York Infantry was known as the Garibaldi Guard. There were quite a few Italians in the Civil war.

Really...so the debates with Douglas were about what, then?

The answer is already in the sentence you've quoted.

Since Booth had a broken leg, and a horse, I suppose rode , hopped and limped are the verbs we need.
