Helsinki Day 1

We saw USA comfortably beat France 7-2 in the opening game

and then Canada beat Slovakia 3-2 in a very good match.

Finally there was the official opening ceremony before the hosts, Finland, played Belarus. They weren’t very good and struggled to a 1-0 win largely due to a brilliant display by the Belarus netminder Vitali Koval

There were some ‘handbags’ as well of course

Day 2

Switzerland were much better than we expected and they thumped Kazakhstan 5-1.

Captain Mark Streit makes it 2-0

Then followed the best ice-hockey match I have ever seen, unfortunately it finished with the wrong result for us. Canada and USA were level after the regulation three periods but USA won it 4-5 with a sudden death overtime goal.

While going thru the TV channels yesterday, I caught a film called "Miracle"..about the 1980 USA Olympic Hockey team..lots of propaganda, but at least they showed Kharmalov, Miklaihlov, Petrov, etc. being played by actors..good to see the "CCCP" kits again..what beautiful hockey they played.

Glad the USA beat the Canadians at the WC..whose the favorite anyways?

Buy a football jersey and get a billboard

Not really, but they should do one for this:

So you're going to the Ice Hockey World Championships in your own country, who are also the reigning World Champions. As Champions and hosts they are playing straight after the official opening ceremonials have finished. The tickets are very expensive but what the hell. You've missed the first couple of minutes of the match because you needed a pee, hot dog, beer etc. Oh well never mind. 2 minutes before end of first period; need another pee, hot dog, beer ??? I'll go now before it finishes. Aaaaah !!!!!

Using the toilet----------------------------------------------------Nothing
Hot Dog-----------------------------------------------------------€ 4.50
Beer---------------------------------------------------------------€ 7.50
Match Ticket----------------------------------------------------€ 155.00

Missing the ONLY goal as your home team wins the match 1-0----PRICELESS

Day 3

The dirtiest team in international ice-hockey, France, beat a brave Kazakhstan 6-3. The first time I saw them they had 4 players in the sin-bin at one stage; second time they punched, kicked and elbowed anyone that got near them and this time a Kazakh was hit so hard he is out of the tournament with severe concussion and the French offender has had a four game ban imposed by the IIHF. This is Kazakhstan’s very good second goal by Vadim Krasnoslobodtsev.

Finland once again scraped through 1-0, this time against Slovakia who were a shade unlucky to get nothing out of a very good match.

The final game of the day was another close one with the winners again a touch fortunate, Switzerland just coming out on top 3-2 against Belarus.

Day 4

There was an excellent performance by Canada as they defeated France yesterday afternoon at the Hartwall Arena. The second goal was sneaked in under the netminder by Pat Sharp (81) and the fifth hammered home by Jordan Eberle (14) at far left.

Shock of the competition so far came in the evening when Slovakia, who have been superb throughout despite having to play the top 3 teams in their first 3 matches, beat USA 4-2. It wasn’t lucky either as they had 32 shots on goal to 20.

ehehe, I know the name and all but are there NHL players and such at this tournament? Or just the ones whom aren't in the playoffs still? I don't see this tournament getting much attention here, that's why I'm asking.

Day 6

Highlight of the day, apart from Canada’s win, was bumping into Ganxsta Zolee as we came out of our sector at the end of the game.

This was close to being the second big shock of the week as Switzerland started like a train with lots of fast attacking play and the opening goal. Canada re-grouped in the second period and dominated the first 15 minutes but the Swiss came back again towards the end. The final period could have gone either way but Canada just had that little bit of extra quality under pressure that saw them through 3-2.

Well it is the World Championships so is equivalent to the World Cup in football. The situation with the Stanley Cup is ridiculous and I've thought so for years. Players can be added to team rosters during the competition so teams are doing that as their guys are being knocked out of the NHL play-offs. So far it's a bit like playing the World Cup or Euros at the same time as the Champions League final or Serie A, La Liga, EPL last few games. It's not the NHL's fault, the IIHF are so pig-headed they won't move the championships by a few weeks. They argued that TV rights etc have all been set up but the NHL suggested moving it a good few years ago so there's been plenty of time for forward planning future championship dates.

Apart from that, this year is really badly organised, not sure how much that is down to the Finnish or Swedish federations but my bet is that a lot of it is because of the IIHF money-grabbers.

Day 8

The first week closed with a fantastic game of ice-hockey. We were very happy with the result but the Finns can consider themselves unlucky to have lost. The reigning World Champions and hosts for this year’s championship were absolutely superb in the first period and could easily have been more than 2-0 up at the break. Canada improved in the second period and somehow got back from 2-0 and 3-1 behind, to level it at 3-3, though still against the run of play. The Canadians then went on to play even better in the final session and scored 2 more but Finland still had chances. The final scoreline of 3-5 was flattering especially as the clincher was after Finland had taken off their netminder in an attempt to get the equaliser.

Before that Kazakhstan, who had lost every game so far, surprised everyone by taking a point from USA by forcing overtime. They were only 22 seconds away from a penalty shoot-out when USA won it 2-3.

Kazakhstan’s 1st

Day 9

Off we went to Stockholm to see the other eight teams in this year’s championships. First up were co-hosts Sweden who were reckoned to be one of the favourites but maybe we caught them on a bad day. Playing newly promoted Italy their attacking play was rather slow and laboured, the Italians were probably quite pleased to get away with a 0-4 defeat.
