Hungarian-Americans want voting rights in Hungary

Adopting Hungary's new constitution was a "historic moment" and "a good start" but it is also vital to grant voting rights and representation in the Hungarian parliament to American Hungarians, the president of the Hungarian American Coalition (HAC) told MTI on Monday local time.

Maximilian Teleki said in Washington that every citizen must be given the right to vote "regardless of their place of residence."

"I am an optimist and a patient man. Perhaps more time will be needed for change but this is a very important issue," Teleki said.

Teleki, who chairs the largest umbrella organisation of Hungarian Americans, earlier contacted President Pal Schmitt and deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjen in writing, stating that HAC supported the plan to grant Hungarian citizenship to all Hungarians. He said there was only one category of citizenship and Hungarians should be given voting rights irrespective of their place of residence, so that they can contribute to shaping the future of the nation.

HAC believes that ethnic minorities in Hungary, as well as ethnic Hungarians living abroad should have representatives in the Hungarian parliament.

If they have Hungarian citizenship it's their right to vote. Just open up some voting booths in the embassies.

They are talking about people without citizenship, including Erdély & Felvidéki magyarok. That probably includes you and I too.

People with citizenship already can vote

We don't have Hungarian citizenship so we aren't affected by daily decisions made by the Hungarian government.

Don't really know if I'm explaining it well. Hope you understand my point.

Well, I am as I have money invested in Hungary and my immediate family live there.

Hungary are amending their citizenship law. So to make it easy for ethnic Hungarians to get citizenship. Of course like I explained to Morti you need to be able to speak Hungarian to be one.

Interesting I read the Gaddafi's wide is actually Hungarian and could get citizenship.

Off course being able to get citizenship has to get tested with cultural and language exams amongst others.

I think we have/are trying to implement this too here in Holland.

San Marino should be the role model for everything, basically.
oldest republic on this planet.

anyways, funny bit is, Hungary considers me hungarian citizen. but I don't. too good it is worth crap what they think. you know, when I married, which was in Hungary, they asked me about my parents, grandparents etc, I had to deliver all the papers and stuff, so they decided I am hungarian. good thing was, it made the wedding process easier. on the other hand, I surely don't want any hungarian passport, voting rights etc. IMHO it is more than enough that I am masochist enough to hang around there lots of times and hell even travel to magyarfoci games.

Many people even sooner, at the age of 35 or so (some even need to work only for 10 years to retire). And if they work after retirement, they are eligible to receive both their pension and their payment. Actually, Hungary is the richest country of the world to allow such things...

Retire after 10 years, awesome....

At the bottom, you see, we are not Homo-sapiens at all. Our core is madness. The prime directive is murder. What Darwin was too polite to say, my friends, is that we came to rule the earth not because we were the smartest, or even the meanest, but because we have always been the craziest, most murderous mother....ers in the jungle. -Stephen King

Can't afford it anymore so they must change. Retiring at 40..my buddy said that the policemen and firefighters were demonstrating in Budapest against the new laws..the firefighters said that after 40 they cannot physically do the job..so I told my buddy how can a pro goalie at 43 still play? They have been spoiled from the Communist days..now it's over.

For years I wished I was born in Hungary and grew up there. Then I met milfy, I don't regret anything before that point. Meeting milfy is easily the highlight of my life "sweetheart, I'm not doing that again"
