Budapest Grand Prix Tennis 2010

Thought it might be better to make this a separate item as Iĺm intending to go along for all nine days of the event. That way it wonĺt clog up the ôother sportsö thread with pages of tennis and also it can just die a natural death after the tournament and any discussion has ended.

The GDF Suez Grand Prix started on Saturday at the Rˇmai TeniszakadÚmiß with the first qualifying round matches. Two of this yearĺs Wimbledon semi-finalists have entered but Petra Kvitova has now withdrawn.

Hereĺs a look at the Rˇmai TeniszakadÚmiß

Centre Court (the Court Asbˇth Jˇzsef)

Courts 5 and 6

This tournament is part of the Road to Bali Tournament of Champions which already has some big names qualified

Nice pics indeed. I always wondered with the Budapest Grand Prix is held, what's it close to and what district is it in? One thing about tennis, if you want to see great young looking ladies in their prime in the best of shape, tennis is the place to be.

Why would you need to go to tennis for that? This is Budapest after all

Hey, my dad lives in the Harmadik KerŘlet on the side of a mountain atop of which is a big antenna. Is the BP Grand Prix fairly close to the Roman amphitheater? From what I read, the tourney is 3rd division, any chance in the future it will scale up to an internationally noted 2nd division circuit?

Depends what you mean by close but I'd say no it's not particularly close to the amphitheatre.

The tier/division ratings went out in 2008. It's generally regarded as 2nd "tier" now. The Premier "tier" with compulsory tournaments for the top players tends to be counted as including the Grand Slams. To get onto that next level the prize money would have to be at least trebled, also the venue although pretty good, would need quite a lot of improvements for that.

The no 1 singles seed went out yesterday but I wasn’t that surprised. Patty Schnyder of Switzerland has lots of experience and a terrific range of shots, which she mixed up effectively to beat the very strong but not as mobile Russian Alisa Kleybanova 6-4, 6-3

In a very close match No 8 seed Polona Hercog from Slovenia beat Catalina Castano of Colombia 4-6, 6-4, 6-4

No 1 seeds in the doubles are Ana Medina Garrigues (Spain) & Sorana Cirstea (Romania) and they beat Andreja Klepač (Slovenia) & Sandra Klemenschits (Austria) 2-6, 6-3, 10-7

3rd seed Timea Bacsinszky (Switzerland) & Tathiana Garbin (Italy) beat Eleni Daniilidou (Greece) & Eva Hrdinovß (Czech Republic) 6-3, 7-5

In the last game of the day Anna Chakvetadze of Russia was level with No 2 seed Alexandra Dulgheru from Romania at 6-7, 6-1 when play was suspended for the evening.

It's not so close to the amphitheatre you think about, but it's closer to Aquincum which has another (Photo)

Some interesting photos after flood: Part 1, Part 2

So am I right in assuming, its on the opposite bank of the Danube from where the Sziget festival is held?

Patty Schnyder could be a premium player, he's a semi-premium player and she's always in the big tourneys. Check out the legs on those broads, ZOWW!

In the match continued from the night before Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania eventually beat Anna Chakvetadze from Russia 7-6, 1-6, 6-2

Match of the day saw 2008 champion but a wild card this time Alize Cornet from France beat the Swiss/Hungarian/Romanian 3rd seed Timea Bacsinszky
6-0, 6-4

7th seeded Szßvay ┴gi went through 7-5, 6-3 against the Austrian Yvonne Meusberger who put up a good fight

Biggest shock was the Czech qualifier Zuzana Ondrßškovß easily beating 6th seed Roberta Vinci of Italy 6-4, 6-0

In the doubles quarter-finals Darya Kustova (Belarus) & Lesya Tsurenko (Ukraine) beat 4th seeded Mariya Koryttseva (Ukraine) & Ioana Raluca Olaru (Romania) 2-6, 7-5, 10-6

and 2nd seeds Timea Bacsinszky (Switzerland) & Tathiana Garbin (Italy) beat Anna Chakvetadze (Russia) & Polona Hercog (Slovenia) 6-3, 5-7, 10-6

Quarter-finals yesterday.

In the battle of the last two years champions Szßvay ┴gi had a much easier than expected win over AlizÚ Cornet 6-3, 6-1

In the semi finals 7th seed ┴gi will play no 2 seed Alexandra Dulgheru who beat Anastasija Sevastova 6-2, 7-6

Finalist last year Patty Schnyder knocked out the 8th seed Polona Hercog 7-5, 1-6, 6-4. On the face of it this looks like a good close match, well it was close but full of errors as neither player was able to find their touch for any amount of time. Patty just played less badly than Polona.

The qualifier Zuzana OndrßÜkovß had another good win, this time against no 4 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues 7-5, 1-6, 6-4

In the first doubles semi-final Timea Bacsinszky & Tathiana Garbin justified their 2nd seed status by defeating Darya Kustova & Lesya Tsurenko 6-4, 4-6, 10-8. This time the score doesnĺt lie, it was a very good match.

In the first singles semi-final Alexandra Dulgheru seemed overwhelmed at first by the level of support for ┴gi and it was 5-0 before she won a game. Once she settled down her powerful hitting gave her a tight but deserved second set. The last was close throughout but ┴gi eventually went through 6-1, 5-7,
7-5 in a match lasting almost 3 hours

There followed an equally even match with Patty Schnyder winning against Zuzana Ondrßškovß, playing her first ever WTA semi-final, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3

The second doubles semi-final saw no 1 seeds Sorana Cirstea & Anabel Medina Garrigues beat 3rd seeded Alexandra Dulgheru & Alisa Kleybanova 6-2, 6-3

And in the finale, Szavay defeated Patty Schnyder 6:3, 6:4. It was played live on MTV 1 today. Agi is pretty pretty good, now only if she can win a major. By the way GDF Suez, is one of this tourney's sponsors some Egyptian consortium?
