Art - as in visual arts - painting, sculpture etc

OK let's give this a go, see if there's enough interest. If not it can just fade away. Very easy to nick pix from websites so would be better if people just used their own pix, but that's not compulsory and sometimes you're not allowed cameras in galleries.

I'll kick off with the picture we have on the main wall at home.

and next one of my favourites by a Hungarian artist, Vásárhelyi Győző better known as Victor Vasarely

I will be more classical - Vasarely is not really my cup of tea. Recently, I've been to the great exposition of Mihály Zichy at the National Gallery (of Budapest) - excellent one, and still on display until the 23 of March. He has a "monumental" style, national paintings, illustrations for Arany, Madách etc. which are fine, but nothing spectacular. But he has absolutely exquisite drawings (including the best Hungary has to offer in erotic art) with everyday subjects, hunting scenes on playing cards etc. Not easy to find them on Internet, but some of it is on the website of the exposition http://www.mng.hu/zichy/. I would recommend the "Cári udvar festője" section, my personal favourite.

Then... of course Csontváry. I like him. He was a bit crazy, but who isn't?

I liked Nagy Kriszta with this:

but the greatest contemporary artist in Hungary is the unnamed Szeged guy who created the Two-Tailed Dog Party and the "Little Hungary" project.

Most of his works are on his page: http://www.mkkp.hu/

I like Nagy Kriszta too, some of her work was at last year's Art Fair at the Műcsarnok.

Munkácsy is too classical for me. How about Vilmos Huszar? Not a good shot but this is from the Louisiana in Denmark.

I mentioned some hungarian artists in Berlin before, so I continue with another one, Moholy-Nagy László,

Moholy-Nagy is great.
Nagy Kriszta IS Tereskova, she has always 2-3 parallel existences

Baksa-Soósused to be a legend in Budapest in the 1960ies early underground... great inspiration for loads of people, including Cseh Tamás.

The top one, 19, is great but I can't really get into this performance and installation stuff, just find it really confusing. Must try harder

Thanks, glad you like (I guess the Hungarian artist I'm most familiar with is myself ). Funny, (as I've discussed with Galloping Major) everybody has a different favorite. Im really happy with the Cate collage (among others), even though its not a painting.

I don't make a living doing art, so I hesitate to call myself an illustrator, because it implies that. Although I have made some $ from it here and there.

Oh yeah..sorry, thats right the prettydarnswell link dosn't work anymore. It had the Cate live on Church St cartoony painting on there. I should take it off.

If he wasn't crazy he probably wouldn't be any good...or as good at least. I mean the guy just simply rules.
