Bit like VHS and Betamax but not so extreme. They are just different formats and some players (not many) will only play/record one of the formats. If you're talking about discs then buy the format your player recommends, if you're buying a player/recorder then pick one that does all of R+, R-, RW+ and RW-, most do these days. If I had to really make a choice it would be + but it really depends on what other players you already have - car, hi-fi, dvd walkman etc. Summary is get one that does all four.

Well, in short I just want to record films from my PC (Philips DVD Writer/player) and then watch back on a DVD Player.

I've got a Philips dual video/dvd writer/player which does all formats but prefers +, as I said if you've a choice go for one that does all formats then you should have no probs playing stuff from other people as well.

Seems I have ...

Brand: Philips

Model: PBDV1640P

Now, how on earth do I work out whether DVD+ or DVD- would be more suitable?

Cheers

If you have a philips use DVD+ but really it's no big difference.

I recently checked this thread and noticed you said you will go for Philips DVD+...I didn't notice this first time around. I would have advised against it.

Anyway, what did you go for in the end and what happened?

Erm, I don't know what you mean there. I mean I never noticed he was going to buy philips media. Philips buys from bad suppliers. Their discs are among the worst you can buy.

There is nothing wrong with buying DVD+R.

Take a look...

Ultrafox sent me this philips DVD+R. It's a R30 disc. It gave one of the worst results I have ever seen on my system.

I use YUDEN000T02 or Sony D21. I get great results with them.

Yeah, see what you mean, bit confusing with Philips the box, Philips the discs and the two combined. My head hurts now!

I bought Philips +R and +RW thinking with their name they would be good, the RW's don't play happily in interchanging with my Philips DVD/VCR, VAIO laptop and Tosh HDD/DVD. The YUDEN have a good reputation think I will try those, available labelled as genuine Taiyo or re-badged Sony and Fuji right?

Hmmm, I think it was philips that I went for now. Either way mate I've had no problems but only burnt about 10 discs. All films etc have been perfect in normal dvd players in my gaf so all is good.

Taiyo yuden don't print on the discs they make as their own brand. You can only check them if they are real by identifying them (or easily by TRT test results). I use DVD Identifier.

I've used many TYG03 discs (Maxell and Verbs not Sony or Fuji) and they are exellent discs. One of the best in the world. But YUDEN000T02 are much better. I've not used any other brands that use this dye. Only Taiyo Yuden themselves.

You can buy them online in uk here...

http://www.dvdshoponline.co.uk/Taiyo-Yuden.html
http://svp.co.uk/product/taiyo_yuden...vd_plus_r_3148

There you have the best DVD+R disc in the world.

I will only use them to back up Bentex TV data and Sony D21.
I may use others for movies that can be replaced. But not stuff that can't be replaced.
