OT: I almost.....

...bought a plane ticket and hotel package for Budapest yesterday. I would leave next Friday at 8 AM montreal time and leave Wednesday the 12th. Just a few days in one of the cities I've always wanted to visit.

Of course, as expected when it comes to spending sums of money over $10, I hesitated and did not buy the ticket. My lifelong dream has always been to visit 'pest, Bucharest, Prague, Vienna and London. Thus far, I have accomplished none of that.

Don't ask me why I am obsessed with visiting 'Pest, let's just say I've always had a soft spot for Eastern European culture, art, and all that.

Question;

What is there to do in 'pest? Places to see.

Also, costs. How expensive is it? In Portugal, items like coffee, alcohol, and food are ridiculously cheap. Same in Hungary?

How easily can I get around not speaking a lick of Hungarian?

Football; when does the season start, finish? Things to avoid when attending a Hungarian football match (colours)

Any information would be appreciated. Be it in this thread or in my private message box.

Thanks

Marco

Very cheap. Should be a bit cheaper than Portugal.

I would say fairly easy. I hear city taxi is the one to use for tourists.
They have a good reputation for not ripping people off

Season started a few weeks ago.
If you go to a Újpest match don't wear green

Sorry for the lack of info, but I'm not from Budapest or like to visit it regularly. But nobody else answered so.

Fö Taxi is the best, but I used to have cheques for the Kockás as well, so I don't care, don't ever use taxis who have no obvious brand or something. they are just a pure rip-off. all others are decent. Fö, City, Buda, 5x5, 6x6, 2000 etc.

as for prices, it is similar to Portugal I would say, especially for basic things as coffee, alcohol, food. for us it is not ridiculously cheap anymore, but for a canadian it probably is.

anyway, things to see:

Buda castle district, Gül Baba Grave, Citadella, Király Bath, Gellért Bath, Rácz Bath, Lukács Bath, Margit Island, Nyugati Railway Station, a Walk along the Körút, Liszt Ferenc Tér, Andrássy Út, New York Coffee House, Gerbeaud Coffee House, Város Liget (Central Park), Váci Utca, hundreds of Secession (art nouveau???) buildings (elephant house in the Zoo, Ferenc Liszt Music Academy, Philantia Flower Shop, Applied Arts Museum,
Geological Institute, Gresham Palace, St László Church, Postbank, Commerce School, Gellért Hotel etc.), Aquincum (remainings of the old roman city), Magyar Nemzeti Galléria (Hungarian National Gallery), Mücsarnok (Art Hall), Szépmüvészeti Muzeum (Museum of Fine Arts),
Synagogue in Dohány Utca (biggest in Europe, second biggest in the world, most beautiful in the world IMO), Parliament, St István Bazilika,

so Marco if there is no brand of a company on the car they are looking for tourists to get their money, watch out beacause they are obviously parking near places where tourists from abroad are usually found
