Armenia in UEL 2018/19

Two APL teams, Alashkert and Pyunik (Gandzasar was SO close to pulling off the upset/comeback over Lech Poznan), move on to the second round of Europa League qualifying.

Let's give Pyunik some praise and credit. They faced a club that made the UEL group stages just a season ago, beating Malmo and Fenerbahce to get there. Even though this year's Vardar side had a terrible/limited squad (sorry Tigran), Pyunik still kept two clean sheets and won 3-0 on aggregate. That is something to cheer for. Congrats to coach Andrey Talalaev and the squad, they are making progress.

Pyunik will next face Tobol Kostanay, Vardan Minasyan's old club, who defeated a Georgian side 3-0 on total aggregate in round one. Tobol definitely has more competitive matches under their belt, sitting in third place of the KPL after 18 matches. Tobol has two upcoming league matches on July 22nd and 29th, with the 1st leg vs. Pyunik next Thursday the 26th. Three matches in seven days for them may be an advantage for Pyunik, maybe it won't. Regardless, I think Pyunik has somewhat of a decent chance to advance to the THIRD round, something an APL team has failed to do in Europe am I wrong?

Now on to Alashkert. Yeah they played a pretty damn good Celtic side in UCL qualifying, but I am still VERY disappointed in the way they played. They drop down to Europa League and will face a Montenegran side in the second round. I don't even see them advancing. I am very suspect of Varuzhan Sukiasyan's coaching ability, and of the makeup of this Alashkert squad. The foreign players are no good, and BOY if I see Artak Yedigaryan and Taron Voskanyan get called up to the national team again I will throw a fit. Artur Yedigaryan did alright over the two legs, but the only bright spot to this Alashkert team is their Serbian keeper Cancarevic.

They did well to hold Vardar to two clean sheets. I think they have a real chance at going through to the third round and yes, I think that would be a first for an Armenian club.

Pyunik got to the 3rd round before and was eliminated by Shakhtar back in 2009 I believe.

Hats off to Pyunik's coach Talalayev. I watched the entire 2nd leg and he did a tremendous job. I don think Pyunik will get past Tobol but a win in Yerevan is not out of the question if they play the way they played against Vardar. Gandzasar did an exceptional job as well. Their opponent was on a different level. So fvcking painful to watch them go out like that. They were on a rampage after that beautiful free kick. This goes to show that we have the potential. We truly do. Hopefully after Rubo bounces, we'll get used to seeing these performances. And as far as Alashkert goes they actually have a decent squad. Getting eliminated by Celtic is not shameful. Did anyone really expect Alashkert to get passed them? I think they'll do well against the Montenegrins.

It looks like Pyunik are without their key African players (Balde, Konate, Kadio, and Diarassouba) for tomorrow's match due to "visa issues." Big loss but I think they can still bring a good result back to Yerevan for next week.

Update from last night. Let's see how Talalayev adjusts his lineup just hours before the match.

11am ET/8am PT kickoff in Kostanay. Let's go Pyunik!

Koryan scored a crucial away goal in the last minute. A 1-0 win in Yerevan and they're through.

The second goal Pyunik conceded was AWFUL. Complete howler from their GK, Kobozev.

Koryan pounced on a late mistake on Tobol's end for that crucial goal. Pyunik couldn't string together much offensively and I gotta say, I was pretty impressed by how Tobol played. BIG goal from Ruslan jan!!

Let's hope the boys get a nice crowd in Yerevan to cheer them on, there certainly was a lot of spectators in Kostanay this evening. And let's hope Talalaev makes the right adjustments for a winning result next week.

1-2 away is a solid result. I can see them winning at home with their legionnaires. Let's see what Alashkert does

Anybody have a link to the Alashkert game? The one that the team posted on their FB page does not work.

Let's make history tonight. Here's how Pyunik and Tobol will line up. Kickoff is in half an hour on Shant TV.

Well played by the boys. Pyunik's coach is on a roll. Now it's Alashkert's turn.
