Armenia/Georgia/Azerbaijan hosting the EC 2020

Armenia/Azerbaijan/Georgia
Three of the most easterly UEFA members have begun negotiations to see if it is viable to bring Euro 2020 to the Caucasus region. This may represent some logistical difficulties with UEFA as Armenia is entirely in Southwest Asia, whilst Georgia and Azerbaijan are either partially or entirely in Asia. However, all three countries are UEFA members, UEFA has no problem with all three countries competing in their national team and club competitions, and all three have attempted qualifying for the World Cup via the UEFA route. Should the three countries win the bid, the European Championships would for the first time be geographically held outside of Europe.

the most possible stadions for hosting Ec 2020

Hrazdan Stadium, Yerevan 70.000 places
Tofik Bakhramov Stadium, Baku 40.000 places
Lankaran City Stadium, Lankaran 20.000 places
Boris Paichadze Stadium, Tbilisi 55.000 places

Not gonna happen. There is not a single stadium that is even close to meeting EC standards and only 3 even meet the capacity requirements, and noone really has the money or the time to build or re-do 8 stadiums. In addition we are still at war with Azerbaijan, I can't imagine this even being realistically pushed for in my wildest dreams.

P.S.

I really have to think that this is made up. Armenia and Azerbaijan couldn't even play their own games against each other. Anyway, if I were from any other European country, I'd be mad pissed that THREE countries who simply don't deserve it would automatically qualify for the Euros. If this is indeed true, I'd suggest to our FFA to consider putting their efforts in actually being able to compete in the EUROs before dreaming of hosting them.

Not that they'd get chosen anyway.

P.S. Welcome to the forum

You should be, only in some alternate dimension or universe would this be possible.

No one is going to accept 3 nations getting an automatic spot at the EC.

If Armenia, Azerbaidjan and Georgia host the EC 2020, I've a suggestion about where to play the final !
We just have to build a stadium on the border between the three countries, at least nobody will be angry !

It is a pipe dream guys.

Even if these 3 countries got along perfectly in the future none of them have the infrastructure.

Hosting such events is not an easy thing to pull off. Secondly as everybody mentioned there would be an uproar if 3 teams got automatical qualification.

I think the odds of me going to Mars next week is higher.

Armenia already has the infustructure to host such a event. I think allowing the three caucasian teams in is a bigger problem. As for the armenian/azeri war i think we are going to see a deal worked out soon.

I don't know about euro news, but don't take everything in wikipedia too seriously( anyone can write whatever they want), especially when there are no references as in this case.

I think people seriously underestimate the type of infrastructure needed to host such events.

When people hear infrastructure they only think stadiums. Forget the stadiums man how about everything else. 10s of 1000s of people will be pouring into these cities.

You need to build roads to accomodate everybody, you need enough hotel rooms to accomodate everybody. It isn't as simple as it seems.

Greece for example had to borrow billions and billions of dollars to revamp such things for the olympics. One they were able to get financing because people were lending money left and right back then. Today, where will the financing come from when banks and institutions are holding on to their money like a hooker hiding money from her pimp.

Secondly lets assume all three of these countries get the financing to build all this infrastructure then what? Are the economies of these three countries to a point where that country can actually benefit from that infrastructure after the games are over?

Imagine a whole bunch of new posh hotels in Armenia and Azerbaijan that will cost billions to build only to have them empty for an indefinate amount of time after the games are over.

Hosting games is a tricky business few countries can actually pull it off.

Armenia is set up well for tourists because it has a large diaspora and they visit often so the hotels and transportation is there already and the roads have been really expanded and renewed last few years. Stadiums are the bigger problem, we just have hrazdan which can really handle a lot of people and thats only if it is upgraded and updated. If the stadium is fixed up the rest is already there plus the visitors will have plenty to do in hayastan 24/7.
