Güneş plots Liverpool demise

Şenol Güneş was goalkeeper in the Trabzonspor AŞ team that beat Liverpool FC in the first leg of their European Champion Clubs' Cup second round tie in October 1976. Now coach of the Turkish side he is hoping to spring another surprise when the two clubs meet in the UEFA Europa League play-offs following Friday's draw in Nyon.

Trabzonspor won the home leg 1-0 only to succumb 3-0 in the return. Bob Paisley's side went on to win their first European Cup that season and have won it a further four times since. Trabzonspor may not have a European pedigree to match, but Güneş insists his side have reason for confidence. "Of course conditions are very different now compared to then," he said. "Now any team can beat another and levels between sides are becoming more balanced. Beating teams like this is really important to us."

Me and my friend have decided that we are gonna take a journey up to Liverpool with the hope of getting into the stadium on the 19th.

It's £10 per person which equals around 22 Lira lol. How cheap is that? Hopefully I can get it officially without having to go onto the black market.

Teofilo will be on the bench. Umut Bulut is a better forward anyway.

That would be ideal, in my opinion. But Umut will start over Teo, and don't be surprised to see Engin Baytar for Gabric. I suppose we'll get a taste this weekend against Bursa.

I'd rather play Engin Baytar over Gabric as well.

Wow what a matchup. Since Liverpool isn't playing at its best, now would be an opportune time for Trabzonspor to take them by surprise. I really hope they can pull this off, that would be a phenomenal shocker.

Teofilo looked deserving for having a hattrick against Bursa, but they'll probably go with Bulut as he is the veteran and more dependable striker.

I couldn't find the definite list but both Alanzinho and Jaja have made the trip to Liverpool. Alan will play but dunno about Jaja. He may get a good 20 minutes or more.

Coach Şenol Güneş speaks to Uefa.com about Liverpool and how they plan to cause a huge upset..

.....

As Trabzonspor AŞ head for Anfield for Thursday's UEFA Europa League play-off opener against Liverpool FC, memories are flooding back for coach Şenol Güneş. The 58-year-old played in goal for the Black Sea side when – fresh from becoming the first team from outside Istanbul to win the Turkish title – they met the same opponents in the 1976/77 European Champion Clubs' Cup second round.

A Cemil Usta strike gave the Turkish club a 1-0 win in the first leg, but while they lost 3-0 on Merseyside in the return, Güneş told UEFA.com that "a big upset" could be in the offing this time around – provided, of course, that they have brought their wet-weather boots this time.

UEFA.com: What did that 1-0 win against Liverpool back in 1976 mean to Turkish football?

Şenol Güneş: We had beaten a huge world football institution. It was a big source of self-confidence for us, and we were very proud. That victory was like a miracle for those days. Trabzonspor were a newly emerging club on the European stage, while Liverpool were a big club from England – from the birthplace of football.

UEFA.com: What do you remember about playing at Anfield?

Güneş: It was exciting and fascinating. In those days, Turkish football was not so advanced in terms of infrastructure and facilities. The first steps were just being taken. Early in the morning of the matchday, we went to see the state of the pitch. It was sunny and the surface was dry. However, when we got to the stadium in the evening, it was wet and slippery. We were 3-0 down within the first 20 minutes. Back then we didn't know people watered pitches before the game; we saw that for the first time at Anfield. The boots we had were not suitable for a wet pitch.

UEFA.com: How good was that Liverpool side?

Güneş: Liverpool were the best team in Europe that year. They had excellent players; goalkeeper Ray Clemence and midfielder Terry McDermott were leading names, while Kevin Keegan was fantastic. Tools of mass communication were not so widespread in those days and Trabzon is quite a long way from Liverpool, but we knew Bob Paisley was a very well respected coach.

UEFA.com: Can Trabzonspor spring a surprise 34 years on?

Güneş: We aim to cause a big upset. We are playing against a team that deserve to be in the UEFA Champions League, but nowadays you can get any result in football. In order to be a big club, you need to work hard enough to spring surprises. That's what we are doing. It's like an early final for us. I desperately want my team to carry on in Europe. If we can reach the group stage and get to the last 32, I will consider that a success.

UEFA.com: Trabzonspor took the Turkish Cup last year and recently won the Turkish Super Cup: what are the targets for this season?

Güneş: Winning the title is of course one of our targets, but especially fighting for a Champions League place. I want Trabzonspor to be an ever-present in European competition. We want to be a competitive brand that gets impressive results; to be able to use our home-grown players; to play brave, entertaining and attacking football with principles.

I sincerely hope you dump them out of Europe, but it's probably less than likely.

I want to see Jaja, but I doubt he will start considering the first leg is at Anfield.

We may have a chance if Gunes do not mess up.
Ceyhun and Burak shouldn't start. Yatara and Umut should start instead.

Jaja can stay out until we are in trouble...

I was expecting him to play with Ceyhun deep to deal with the pace of Liverpool, and especially because they're on the road.

How do you field a lineup without Yattara or Alanzinho?

Well one of them has to make way because Senol wants to play with two forwards. I can't believe Burak is playing though, how did this dick end up at Trabzon anyway?
