Veracruz winning run ends with 7-1 thrashing

MEXICO CITY, Oct 17 (Reuters) -

Veracruz's run of eight successive wins in the Mexican championship ended dramatically with a 7-1 thrashing at UNL on the weekend.

Carlos Morales scored twice for the Tigers while Pablo Quatrocchi put through his own goal and Jesus Olalde, Brazilian Irenio Soares, Argentine Claudio Husain and Mario Ruiz shared the other four goals.

Isaac Terrazas replied with a late penalty for the Red Sharks, missing injured forward Cuauhtemoc Blanco, who stayed top of Group Three despite the crushing defeat.

"It was a footballing accident," their Uruguayan coach Wilson Graniolati said.

The Monterrey-based Tigers, coached by Argentina's 1986 World Cup goalkeeper Nery Pumpido, are second in Group Two.

Meanwhile, the misery continued for pre-championship favourites America and Cruz Azul.

America, bottom of Group One with eight points from ten games, were beaten 3-0 in the Azteca stadium by defending champions UNAM, the goals coming in a nine-minute spell during the first half.

Bolivian Joaquin Botero put the visitors ahead with a brilliantly taken lob over goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, then Duilio Davino put through his own goal and Ismael Iniguez scored from close range.

Paraguayan international striker Jose Cardozo converted two penalties and Brazilian-born Antonio Naelson added the third as Toluca won 3-1 at Cruz Azul.

Last week, Naelson became the first naturalised player to score for Mexico when he was on target in their 3-0 win over Trinidad & Tobago in a World Cup qualifier.

Cruz Azul stayed bottom of Group Two.

The championship's last unbeaten record also fell as Group Two leaders Puebla crashed 3-0 at home to Morelia.
