2014/15 Championship Promotion & Playoff Chase

After the Boxing Day fixtures in the Championship we are exactly halfway through the season and as usual the race for the promotion/playoff spots are tight with plenty of surprise names trying to punch their ticket into next season's BPL.

The biggest of the surprises are the tables toppers Bournemouth and Ipswich Town with also Brentford, newly promoted to the Championship, remaining in the top 6 race. Still fighting for automatic promotion are the expected teams such as Derby, Middlesbrough, Norwich and Watford. Eddie Howe has done such a good job with Bournemouth and maybe we shouldn't be surprised with their success as they finished in the top 10 last season. They also have 54 goals which is by far the most in the league.

Nottingham Forest have been disappointing since their good start but still in the playoff picture. The constant coaching changes at Watford hasn't hurt them entirely yet but I still expected better from them.

Here is the table midway through the season

1. Bournemouth 45
2. Ipswich Town 44
-----------------------------
3. Derby County 42
4. Middlesbrough 42
5. Brentford 40
6. Watford 38
-----------------------------
7. Norwich City 37
8. Blackburn Rovers 34
9. Wolves 34
10. Nottingham Forest 31
11. Cardiff City 31
12. Charlton Athletic 31
13. Sheffield Wednesday 31

Teams like Fulham, Bolton and Birmingham City have improved since their managerial changes and can still get back in the playoff picture but are still 10+ points away from sixth, will still include them in the poll as I think they will finish above teams like Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton

I still think Bournemouth will fade next few months

Brentford have done very well for what has always been a lower league team, their manager is an ex City trader, started being his football manager career in his 50s.

As for Forest...Pearce is a shit coach, and always will be, they have 0 chance of promotion

Still think it's Derbys title for the taking, we have the strongest squad and this is wherein should show. Expect Norwich to come on strong as we'll.

Hmm, thought they were nicely placed to have a go in the second half of the season myself, compared to how relegated teams have really struggled in recent seasons they were doing alright.

Bournemouth have lost 2 of their last 3 league matches, they still top the table but Middlesbrough is 1 point behind while both Ipswich and Derby have games in hand. If Ipswich win their game in hand they top the table while Derby can equal Bournemouth but have an inferior GD

Finally Bournemouth start to have a bit of a bad run, Ipswich away at Brighton tonight, derby don't play until next Tuesday. Not really sure why games are split over 2 weeks??

Looks more and more likely it's going to go right down to the wire, no one seems capable of pulling away.

Brighton 3-1 up at half time, good news for derby. Forest losing by same score at Fulham, all is well with the world again

Both games finished 3-2.

Huge opportunity for derby to go level top when they play Blackburn in the game in hand on Tuesday.

Ross McCormack with a first half hat trick for Fulham, wonder if the angry Fulham fans that came to pride park earlier in the season and gave the bloke nothing but abuse, still sing what a waste of money? By far Fulhams best player.

Wigan losing again. Has Malky won a match since taking over?

Blackpool take a 2-0 lead and end up losing 7-2 to Watford.

Wigan beat Leeds on Boxing Day, that's his only win.

Hope they go down. Probably being too cruel, I don't care.

Blackpool and Wigan probably are, they are in massive trouble. Blackpool never had a shot staying up this season anyway but Wigan's struggles have surprised me. I suspect Rotherham will be the third team to go down. Brighton is a team who have improved since Hyypia resigned

Millwall are really poor also. Should be a scrap between them and Rotherham to join Blackpool and Wigan for the drop.

Unfortunately forest got to many points at the start of the season and will just about survive.

Wigan are one of those teams, who had their time to shine after having some hefty investment, but they just never had the fan base, first time I went to Wigan there was only 12000 in the crowd and nearly 4000 of them were from derby. I won't be sad to see them relegated. Think it will be 3 from the current bottom 4 but Leeds and Reading could be dragged into it.

Bournemouth v Watford tonight, big game with top 6 currently looking like this,

Bournemouth - 51 pts
Derby - 51 pts
Middlesbrough - 50 pts
Ipswich - 50 pts
Brentford - 49 pts
Watford - 47 pts

Watford with the chance to close things up even more, they're in good form, Bournemouth have had a little wobble, so should be an interesting game. It's also brentford v Middlesbrough tomorrow.

Bit of an anti climax after Watford have a player sent off after 28 seconds. Bournemouth ease to a 2-0 win.

Be interesting to see if there's any signings on deadline day, as clubs look for a last boost in their promotion boost. Though the emergency loan window opens next week I think which is where I believe derby will do their business.

Bournemouth have had a fifth bid for Birmingham forward demarai Gary turned down, just the £5 million. When did Bournemouth get that sort of money??
