Albion sign Phillips

West Bromwich Albion have completed the signing of Kevin Phillips on a two-year deal from Aston Villa for a fee of £700k.

Both Albion and Sunderland were given permission to speak to the 33-year-old forward after earlier agreeing a fee for the player. Some Albion supporters had assumed the Hitchin born former England international would be almost certain to return to Sunderland, one of his former clubs, where Phillips scored over 100 goals in more than 4-years and is still regarded as a hero.

However, Phillips, who has played in the West Midlands for the last 12 months, may regard Albion as a more attractive option, with a two-year deal offering him a more realistic shot at ending his career in the Premier League.

WBAzone also understands the signing of Phillips may not represent the final piece of transfer business at the Hawthorns this summer, with boss Bryan Robson still believed to be looking to recruit another striker.

Hartson & Philips, both for 1.2 milions, thats a great job by Robson, not a long term solution but at least this is good enough for this and upcoming season.

id say, poor Ellington now :rollani: Seems this guy cant settle in this team.

Pleasantly surprised

Although KP is no spring chicken I still think he has what it takes especially in this division.

Good signing for West Brom he'll score a few goals, no worries about that.

oh whos our next game against in the league?

yep Sunderland away !

Its on sky too.

So far Sunderland have lost 5 from 5, going out to Bury last night in the cup.

I'm not sure if that bodes too well for us as surely they will have to snap back out of the doldrums at some point. Just as long as its not till Tuesday next week

Kev hoping to renew 'Special K' strikeforce
KEVIN Phillips is chomping at the bit to pick up where he left off with
strike partner and Powerade's Player of the Month for October Diomansy
Kamara.

But Phillips admits he's got a fight on his hands to get past the Senegal
pace ace's current side-kick, Nathan Ellington.

The last time the duo started together they ran riot in a 5-1 romp at
Ipswich, with 'Super Kev' bagging a hat-trick and 'Joe' netting a double.

But a training ground calf injury sidelined Phillips for the next four games
and, after returning to fitness, he has been restricted to two substitute
appearances against QPR and Derby last week, with Ellington preferred in
attack.

"Joe thoroughly deserves his player-of-the-month award," said Phillips.

"He's a fantastic player and has done well to come back from his injury in
pre-season.

"He's looked sharp, is a threat and is quick.

"We clicked together quite well and then I had my setback.

"I'd love to try and pick up where we left off, but Nathan has come in and
done a good job so I know I'm fighting for my place.

"When I have played alongside Joe I've seen he's an intelligent player.

"He's good on the ball and, for me, it's a massive bonus to play alongside
him."

Five-goal Phillips has also set his sights on out-gunning Kamara and
finishing top of the Albion scoring chart come the end of the season.

The former Portsmouth star currently leads the way with eight from only
six-and-a-half league outings.

"I didn't know much about Joe before I came to West Brom," Phillips added.

"I'd played against him a couple of times and seen what he could do.

"Now working with him day in, day out I can see what an excellent technical
player he is.

"He's a good finisher and we're all delighted he's having such a good
season.

"He's got eight goals and I've got five so it's a good competition to see
who can finish top scorer at the end of the season.

"I've got some catching up to do, which I'm looking forward to."
