John Hartson

Baggies seal deal for Hartson

West Bromwich Albion have completed the transfer of Celtic striker John Hartson.

The Welsh international has agreed a two-year contract at The Hawthorns to conclude manager Bryan Robson's long-running pursuit of the 31-year-old.

Albion had a £500,000 bid for the former Arsenal and West Ham striker accepted by The Hoops at the end of last month, after Robson identified Hartson as the player to spearhead his side's bid to regain promotion to The Premiership.

Hartson has now put pen-to-paper with the Black Country club and is relishing the prospect of a new challenge.

"I have had five fantastic years in Scotland and been lucky enough to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world," Hartson told stellargroup's website.

"But for a variety of reasons the time is now right for me to make a change and to return to English football.

"I spoke to Bryan Robson and was impressed with his plans for next season.

"Obviously he wants Premiership football back at The Hawthorns as soon as possible and that leaves me with another big challenge on my hands.

"I feel fit and healthy and cannot wait for the new season to start now. I am looking forward to a new adventure."

Finally this transfer is done !
I expect no less than 15 goals from him in first season

Great signing for you guys IMO. He's a good player and I'm suprised there wasn't more interest from Premiership clubs. I fully expect him to score for fun in the Championship.

John Hartson is a born goalscorer, and made himself a hero up here at Celtic Park. A lot of people are surprised that we let him go for as much as we did, which tells you how much he's still regarded by Celtic supporters.

He's definitely the type of player that should ensure WBA will be up there challenging for a promotion spot in the coming season. All the best to him, and WBA of course.

thanks,

I was surprised that he agreed to come, but I'm glad he has.
Cant see any of the Championship defences sleeping easier knowing they will have to face him next season.

King of 'Harts'
BRYAN Robson believes two-goal John Hartson has the potential to follow in the footsteps of the late Jeff Astle and Cyrille Regis and become a great Albion centre-forward.

The powerhouse striker crowned his Baggies debut with a brilliant match-winning double in the 2-0 win over Hull, which took him past the 200-career-goal mark.

And Robson believes the 31-year-old hitman will establish himself as a firm fans' favourite in the Black Country, after becoming a real hit with previous club Celtic's supporters by smashing more than 100 goals in five years at Parkhead.

"I'm sure our fans are going to take to John," said the Hawthorns manager.

"He leads the line well and is a clever footballer.

"Harts has got a lot more ability than people give him credit for.

"At this club, we've had a tradition of great strikers like Jeff Astle and Cyrille Regis.

"Hopefully, the Albion fans will see another real good centre-forward in
John."

Hartson ready for Wales comeback

Hartson is available to add to his 51 caps
John Hartson has confirmed that he has spoken to John Toshack and made himself available for a Wales return.

The 31-year-old striker announced his international retirement in February, but a summer move from Celtic to West Brom has prompted a rethink.

National manager John Toshack favours a speedier front line but he has welcomed the back-up that Hartson can provide.

"I spoke to John (Toshack) on Monday and said that if I'm needed I'm there for him," said Hartson.

"He was delighted with that. He doesn't want me to travel half-way round the world if I'm not going to play, but if there are injuries or suspensions then I am available."

Hartson's original decision to quit was prompted by a desire to see more of his children, but having moved closer to his native Swansea he has more time.

"If Wales need me they will give me plenty of notice, I'm half out of retirement," said the 6ft 1ins target man.

Hartson made his Wales debut in March 1995 in an away match against Bulgaria, and went on to score 14 goals up to his last appearance against Cyprus last November.

I made it clear to John that with the style we will be playing at times it would not fit in with the way he plays

John Toshack

"Hartson has done things in the right way, he phoned me to tell me that he was available again," said Toshack.

"That's great and we will consider him in the future, but I must say the lads who have come in have done well.

"I made it clear to John that with the style we will be playing at times it would not fit in with the way he plays, but I am happy that he is available and it does give me that extra option."

Liverpool and Wales front man Craig Bellamy was also happy to learn that he could partner the West Brom striker once again.

"It's a positive move, we're a small nation with limited resources and we need people of his quality," said Bellamy.
