BIG-MATCH FACTS

a.. NEWCASTLE UNITED against West Bromwich Albion provides a stark contrast between the two managers. Graeme Souness could not have made a better start to his reign at St James's Park - two wins out of two - and the club are seeking a fourth successive victory in all competitions. Gary Megson, with doubts about his future at the Hawthorns permeating around the football
world, takes West Brom to the north east without a win this season, and on
the back of a humiliating Carling Cup defeat by League One Colchester.

a.. The Magpies, who defend their 2-0 Uefa Cup first round first leg lead over Hapoel Bnei Sakhinn in Israel on Thursday, are the joint second highest scorers in the Premiership with 11 goals, but an amazing ten fewer than Arsenal. Conversely they've conceded seven on their Premiership travels, and only Blackburn and Charlton (nine each) have shipped more top flight goals on the road.

a.. The north east club have won five and drawn four of their last nine League matches against Albion.

a.. WEST BROMWICH ALBION return to St James, intent on repeating their 1-2
victory in the third round of the Carling Cup there last October.

a.. The Baggies have scored one goal in each of their Premiership outings,
with the exception of the 3-0 defeat in their last away game at Liverpool.
Each of the bottom three clubs - all promoted last season - are yet to win,
and Albion are one of three sides without a clean sheet so far in the top tier - Crystal Palace and Portsmouth being the others.

a.. The Baggies lead the League head-to-head standings by 38 wins to 35, but have not won on Tyneside for 27 years, since a 0-3 top flight success on 10 September 1977.

Referee: Mike Riley (Leeds)

Purse: Sending off was harsh

By Oliver Bhurrut

DARREN Purse refused to round on referee Mike Riley - despite his sense of
injustice at being sent off in the 3-1 defeat at Newcastle.

The Baggies captain was given his marching orders for two alleged fouls on
Craig Bellamy in the 12th minute and Patrick Kluivert 27 minutes from time
with the game still goalless.

And the former Blues defender believes his dismissal cost Albion the chance
of at least a point at fortress St James' Park.

"To get sent off when we were playing really well and had kept it at 0-0 for
60 minutes was more than disappointing," admitted Purse.

"My red card changed the whole game really.

"It was very harsh. I've been sent off for a lot worse than that but
obviously the referee is there to make those sort of decisions and that's
the way he saw it.

"I didn't think I touched Bellamy for the first yellow card but that's life
because the referee thought there was contact.

"I've just got to hold my hands up and learn from it.

"When we were 11 versus 11 we were doing well.

"Obviously we knew they were going to have the lions share of possession
being at home but we restricted them to long-range efforts rather than them
getting in behind us.

"We defended well as a team but the sending off changed things big style."

Purse is now hoping Gary Megson's men can cash in on two successive
Hawthorns clashes against Bolton and Norwich after suffering three
consecutive defeats on the road.

"We've had three good draws at home and it's unfortunate we've had three
tough away games at Everton, Liverpool and Newcastle," he added.

"The main thing is to win our home games."

Megson: Red card turned the game
By Oliver Bhurrut

GARY Megson described Darren Purse's 63rd-minute sending-off as "soft" and
claimed it was the turning point in Albion's 3-1 defeat at Newcastle.

The Hawthorns skipper became the second Baggies player in successive
Premiership matches to be red carded after Neil Clement's dismissal against
Fulham last weekend.

But the Albion manager was disappointed referee Mike Riley deemed fouls on
Craig Bellamy in the 12th minute and Patrick Kluivert 27 minutes from time
to be worthy of yellow cards with the game still goalless.

Albion's ten men eventually succumbed to goals from former Barcelona striker
Kluivert in the 70th minute, substitute James Milner nine minutes later and
Alan Shearer's 350th career strike in the 86th minute.

But Megson's troops did have the consolation of a late Geoff Horsfield goal,
his second in as many games, which lifted them above Norwich into 18th place
on goal difference.

The Baggies manager said: "I'm disappointed because I felt in the first half
we got into some good positions and didn't make the most of them.

"We were talking before the game about the need to get our first win but no
one is going to give it to us.

"We got into some decent positions in the first half without working Shay Given.

"We sat too deep which wasn't by intention. It was just that we were too easy to play against.

"In the second half we were much better before the sending-off.

"I think the red card was the turning point because when you go down to ten
men against a talented side you're going to have problems.

"They scored at a good time with their one-man advantage and the second goal
really killed us off."

Megson added: "If you take Darren's two bookings in isolation, I thought the
first one was a bit soft and the second one was even softer.

"If centre-halves are going to get sent off for those kind of things then
you're going to be down to ten men and less on more than one occasion."

Megson revealed he will be looking at replays of Purse's challenges before
deciding whether to launch an appeal.

But he also felt his side were hard done by after Robbie Elliott only
received a caution for a rash 51st-minute challenge on Kanu when the
Nigerian international looked to be clean through on goal.

"Given the challenge on Kanu when he was through, and given Elliott was the
last man, it's very hard to take," he insisted.

"We'll have a look at Purse's bookings again because at the moment I'm
giving a judgement having only seen it on the pitch.

"We'll see and then decide from there."

Newcastle 3-1 West Brom

Newcastle turned on the power late on to pile pressure on Gary Megson, whose side also had Darren Purse sent off.
After a niggly first 45 minutes, Lee Bowyer hit the woodwork before Purse saw red for a second bookable offence.

Kluivert made it 1-0 after Russell Hoult parried a cross from Laurent Robert, who then struck the bar.

Substitute James Milner got on the end of a Jermaine Jenas cross and Alan Shearer grabbed number three, before Geoff Horsfield netted a consolation.

The Baggies were looking to make amends for their Carling Cup defeat by Colchester - but they could have had more problems after just a minute.

Kluivert headed over after a slip from Riccardo Scimeca allowed Craig Bellamy to get a cross in from the left.

Newcastle had a lucky escape when Rob Earnshaw beat the offside trap, only to stand on the ball when a run in on goal looked likely.

But the Magpies were making all the running and Hoult saved comfortably from a long-range Bowyer effort before the midfielder headed narrowly wide from Bellamy's cross.

Purse appeared to handle a Shearer shot and Bowyer was impeded by Thomas Gaardsoe after finding himself in space in the area, but on both occasions referee Mike Riley waved play on.

Although Jason Koumas was allowed to fire in a 25-yarder that did not trouble Shay Given, and Purse's free header from a Koumas corner went straight at the keeper, the home side continued to look stronger.

Shearer went close with a header from Stephen Carr's cross and two tremendous blocks from Scimeca denied Kluivert.

But Bowyer should have made it 1-0 when sloppy defending saw him one-on-one with Hoult - but he could only find the side-netting.

With the ball coming back incessantly at his defence Megson brought on Horsfield at the break for Earnshaw, who had been ineffectual since his early forays.

But Bowyer continued to pose a threat and his 35-yarder whistled past the post straight from the restart.

Clement used his renowned left-foot to good effect at the other end when his free-kick from even further out flashed wide.

Bowyer then went desperately close to breaking the deadlock when his curling effort hit the angle of post and crossbar after some improvisation on the edge of the area.

It needed a timely intervention from Purse to deny Shearer and substitute Robert fashioning an opening.

But it all went horribly wrong for the centre-back, who had been Albion's best player, when he brought down Kluivert and was sent off for his second bookable offence.

Nicky Butt had a claim for a penalty after being shoved off the ball by Martin Albrechtsen, but again the home side's cries were ignored.

Newcastle's frustration was lifted when Kluivert smashed home after Hoult could only palm out a Robert cross.

And, after Robert had also hit the woodwork, Milner - who had only come on moments earlier - made it 2-0 when he just about managed to turn in Jenas' cross.

Chances were coming thick and fast now and Shearer got in on the act, thanks to more good work from Jenas.

There was still time for Horsfield to head in Andy Johnson's cross and Robert to force Hoult into a fine reaction save.

It was Newcastle's second successive Premiership win under new boss Souness, but Megson will now be hoping for some patience from the Hawthorns hierarchy.
