18/09/2004 West Brom v Fulham

West Brom 1-1 Fulham

Striker Andy Cole was the hero and villain at The Hawthorns as nine-man Fulham held 10-man West Brom.

Cole put Fulham ahead after a neat one-two with Adam Green, but was then sent from the field after appearing to punch West Brom defender Neil Clement.

Clement was on his way off the pitch having been shown red for tripping up goal-bound Luis Boa Morte.

West Brom striker Kanu headed in a late equaliser in a match that also saw Fulham's Papa Bouba Diop sent off.

Not many inside the ground could have predicted the manner in which this match was going to reach its climax.

The first half was certainly entertaining, with Ł3m-signing Robert Earnshaw showing home fans why West Brom broke the bank to bring him to the Midlands.

The Welsh international harried and hassled the Fulham defence and forced keeper Edwin van der Sar to make a point-blank save from is header early on.

The Dutch stopper excelled himself again by palming Kanu's follow-up header over the crossbar.

Earnshaw's partnership with Kanu appeared to be working well and the Welshman's good individual work was set to be rewarded when he won a penalty 15 minutes before the interval.

The diminutive striker's headed effort on goal was adjudged to have illegally bounced off the arm of Fulham defender Moritz Volz.

From the resulting penalty Earnshaw struck his effort straight but also very high over the bar.

The tone of the second half was set when Senegal midfielder Diop was sent off for shoving West Brom's Clement.

Surprisingly, given their numerical disadvantage, it was Chris Coleman's team who responded better to the dismissal.

And with 20 minutes of the match remaining, Cole found Green on the left and the 20-year-old returned the pass straight to the feet of the former Manchester United forward.

Cole made no mistake with the goal - his mistake came five minutes from time.

First, Clement was sent from the field by referee Mike Dean, who ruled that the defender had tripped Boa Morte.

A fracas followed during which Cole appeared to throw a lunging punch at Clement.

Just when the home crowd thought all the drama had ended, up popped Kanu to steer home the equaliser past Van der Sar.

On any other day a Kanu header would be remembered.

However, after three red cards, even the Nigerian would not be surprised if he did not steal the headlines.

Fulham/WBA await FA action

Fulham and West Brom are bracing themselves for a Football Association probe
into the brawl that occurred late on in Saturday's game. The incident happened in the 83rd minute following Neil Clement's dismissal for fouling Luis Boa Morte.

Andy Cole was sent off in the free-for-all that followed after clearly hurling punches towards Clement.

Fulham ended the match with nine men, with Papa Bouba Diop having been sent off for striking Darren Purse.

After the game Fulham boss Chris Coleman labelled Purse a "coward".

It is not the first time Fulham have been involved in mass brawl since
returning to the Premiership.

In December 2001 Fulham and Everton were involved in a 20-man melee.

Cole lands FA ban
by Paul Higham - Last Updated 7 Oct 2004

Andy Cole has been handed a three-match ban and Ł10,000 fine following his
bust-up against West Brom.

Cole was sent off for fighting with Baggies star Neil Clement during their
ugly 1-1 encounter at The Hawthorns last month.

The former Manchester United marksman was furious with his dismissal and
also hurled a barrage of abuse at referee Mike Dean.

Cole has now been found guilty of violent conduct and abusing a match
official and handed a further three-match ban to go on top of the original
ban of three games that accompanies a straight red card for violent conduct.

Cole will now have to sit out six games as part of his punishment, along
with the Ł10,000 fine that has been slapped on him for his behaviour.

"Cole's first charge was for abusive/insulting words to a match official for
which he was given a two-match suspension to commence immediately," the FA
said on Wednesday.

"He was also found guilty of violent conduct and was handed a further
one-match suspension in addition to the three games he has already served
for the dismissal."
