Megson's Gaardsoe boost
GARY Megson has been given a huge boost with Thomas Gaardsoe set to win his race against time to be fit for Saturday's trip to Liverpool (ko 3pm).

The Danish international returned to full training on Tuesday after being
stretchered off at Everton 12 days ago with ankle ligament damage.

And Megson said: "The initial prognosis was that Thomas could be out for
three weeks but hopefully he'll be available for the game."

Jason Koumas is back in contention after completing his four-match ban and
although not all the Baggies' other international stars have reported back
yet, they have all been given a clean bill of health.

The Albion manager, however, could be without Andy Johnson (hamstring) and
Darren Moore (knee) for the Anfield encounter.

"Andy has a problem with his hamstring that we think comes from his back so
he is struggling," Megson added.

"He'll be a doubt for Saturday as will Darren who is struggling a little bit
more with a knock on his knee.

"Everybody else is okay although some are not back from international duty
yet.

"Rob Earnshaw and Jason were both in rather a strange game last night by the
sounds of it but they both trained with us this morning."

Weather leaves Cisse stranded in Faroes

Sep 10 2004

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

DJIBRIL CISSE is struggling to face West Brom after getting stranded in the Faroe Islands - as Jamie Carragher also fights to be fit for the Anfield fixture.

Liverpool's record striker (left) was still in the Faroes this morning because foggy weather conditions prevented him flying back to Paris for his connecting flight to Liverpool on Thursday.

Cisse was due back on Merseyside with the rest of the international players for an afternoon training session.

Instead, he was one of eight stars having to spend an extra night in the Faroes and was still there 36 hours after helping France to a 2-0 win on Wednesday.

Cisse scored in the World Cup qualifier, but Reds boss Rafael Benitez now faces a dilemma whether to recall him since he will not have trained with the squad before the game.

The striker was dropped against Bolton a fortnight ago, but it was expected Benitez would return to a more familiar 4-4-2 formation against Gary Megson's side.

After leaving the Faroes first thing this morning, Cisse was reporting to the training ground for a training session which will determine his availability.

Other French Premier-ship players were lucky enough to leave the Faroes immediately after the game. The Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United play-ers were back at their clubs yesterday having used a private jet to get home.

Meanwhile, Carragher was Benitez's main injury following the international contingent's return.

The defender needed treatment on a foot injury and did not train yesterday.

He will have a fitness test today.

Megson: "We showed too much respect"

By Oliver Bhurrut

GARY Megson watched his Albion side given a footballing lesson in a 3-0
defeat at Anfield and then warned: "We showed Liverpool too much respect."

The Baggies looked liked escaping with a single-goal deficit at the break
after star of the show Steven Gerrard fired a 17th-minute opener.

But Steve Finnan doubled the Reds tally two minutes before half-time and the
Black Country outfit could not find a way back as the hosts killed the game
off in the 61st minute as Luis Garcia bagged on his home debut.

Megson said: "We've got to learn lessons very quickly.

"We didn't compete well enough and we didn't defend well enough in
individual situations.

"We worked hard enough and at times passed the ball well enough.

"But the lesson we must take from that is that we mustn't show teams as much
respect as we did today.

"We've got to go at teams before we go a goal down.

"I get the impression we are in awe of the opposition at times."

"Once we went a goal down I thought we played okay and looked like we might
be able to get an equaliser but the second goal really took the wind out of
our sails."

The Hawthorns manager also insisted his troops must improve their efforts
when they are not in possession of the ball as Rafael Benitez's men ran them
ragged at times.

He added: "We've got to learn that playing football isn't just purely and
simply about passing when you've got the ball.

"We've got to do the other side of the game as well."

Liverpool 3-0 West Brom

Liverpool steadied their early nerves with a comfortable win that left West Brom awaiting their first league win.
Steven Gerrard rounded off a slick move to open the scoring and a cool-headed Steve Finnan effort put Liverpool comfortably ahead at the break.

West Brom became more involved after the break but when Luis Garcia hammered home a third, following up his own blocked shot, the points were safe.

Robert Earnshaw came on for his West Brom debut but made little impact.

West Brom's Martin Albrechtsen had already nearly put through his own net before Gerrard rewarded Liverpool's early pressure with the first goal.

He combined with Garcia and Finnan to charge through on goal and kept his balance to shoot home from close range.

That lead was nearly extended when Neil Clement's attempted clearance was cleared off his own line, and from the resulting corner Sami Hyypia went close with a header.

Clement's off-target header from a Jason Koumas corner was West Brom's first meaningful effort on goal before Garcia wasted a glorious chance to double Liverpool's lead when his free header was way off target.

Finnan claimed his first league goal for Liverpool to make it 2-0 when he trapped Jon Arne Riise's cross-field ball superbly and slotted home from a tight angle.

Clement again went close for Albion in the dying seconds of the half but Djibril Cisse nearly made it 3-0 as Liverpool went in comfortably ahead at the break.

Earnshaw came on just after half time as the visitors began to get more involved in the game, before Garcia wrapped up the points when he followed up his own blocked shot to thump home.

Koumas soon tested Jerzy Dudek with a low long-range effort but with Liverpool showing no likelihood of letting their lead slip, the game was over as a serious contest.

Near the end, substitute Milan Baros had strong penalty appeals waved away when West Brom captain Darren Purse brought him down on the edge of the box.

And keeper Russell Hoult needed to be at his best to block Cisse's late effort as Liverpool eased to victory.
