Cosmin Contra

West Brom have taken Contra on loan from Atletico till the end of the season.

Been very impressed with your last minute dealings as this is the quality of players you were missing last term in the premiership.

I think the romanian will suit the english game very will and on form is one of the best attacking right backs around. Eager to prove he is still a quality player, great signing

He is excellent but very much off form since these last few years at Atletico. He is a very attack minded player, a typical R. Carlos style wingback who has an excellent cross and beats opponents well.

Who do West Brom play right-back now? I really hope he gets to start. This last year has seen almost all the good Romanians abroad lose their starting places and I hope Contra gets his back here.

Bernt Hass or Ricardo Scimeca, both aren't really up to much. Haas is good going forward, very good Div 1 player, but average Prem player, Megson tends to use him on the right wing when Koumas isn't about.
Scimeca is defensive, and is not a full back at all.

Contra I hope will be a breath of fresh air for us

Contra joins Baggies on loan
ALBION have signed Romanian international Cosmin Contra on a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid.

The 28-year-old right-back, who joined the La Liga outfit from Italian giants AC Milan for Ł5 million in September 2002, has fired five goals in 43 appearances for his country.

The terms of the deal will see the Baggies pay a set figure to Atletico each time the defender plays for the Black Country club.

Contra helped Romania pip England to the Euro 2000 quarter-finals where they suffered a 2-0 defeat against Italy.

And he was an integral part of the Deportivo Alaves side which dramatically lost 5-4 to Liverpool in the 2001 UEFA Cup Final.

His form that term prompted his move to the San Siro where he spent one season before returning to Spain with Atletico.

The 5ft 9in ace, who has scored 15 goals in 230 career league games, is now raring to go after an injury-plagued 2003/04 campaign which was hampered by ankle ligament damage suffered in pre-season.

The Brasov-born defender required surgery last October and has since found it difficult to regain his first team place.

A feature report from Gazeta Sporturilor on Contra's move to England

From this season, Atletico is managed by Cesar Ferrando. Contra had thought he would have a better relationship with him than with Manzano, who didn't use Contra after recovering from the bad injury to his right ankle. Ferrando played Contra in 4 InterToto matches before informing him of a new right-back's arrival and that he is not wanted in the squad anymore. He was forced to move. That, Cosmin did. Monday he signed with West Bromwich Albion, 15th placed in the English Premeir League.

- Cosmin, how did you arrive at West Bromwich?
- Basically they came to me. Realising my situation they came in contact with Atletico and negotiated until they came to an agreement: a one year loan with Atletico still paying my salary.

- And you accepted?
- What could I have done? I had three possibilities. Getafe, Mallorca and WBA. The Getafe move fell because the EU documents didn't go through. Mallorca needed a right-back because David Cortez was to join Liverpool, but that move collapsed so I didn't move either. Only England was left as an option. That's life if you are Romanian! If I was an EU player I would have had 20 options!

- Deportivo Alaves?
- Maggots. That option never existed. For two weeks Atletico have been telling me about West Brom but I was still awaiting Mallorca. I would have preferred to remain in Spain.

- So you are going to England.
- I've been there, I saw Birmingham was a nice city, English stadium, nice, good conditions, I passed the medical and Monday evening I signed.

- WBA has only 3 points from 4 games. What is the teams objective?
- Escaping relegation, but I hope for more. They have got better this last while. The Japanese player, Inamoto came, who played for Arsenal and Fulham, Gera is the Hungarian captain (I'm sure they'll get along well ), the Welsh striker Earnshaw I've heard is very good. In total there are 7 internationals.

- Did you count yourself amongst them just then?
- No, I am still an international? I am lucky that the past two years count, because if they only counted the caps from last season I wouldn't have made the 75% allowing me an English work-permit.

- Do you have a message from the national team manager, Iordanescu in that?
- To keep healthy, to wish him luck and to win! Apart from that I have nothing to tell him. I haven't spoke to him since April.

- But what do you have to say to the boys?
- Good luck! To win 6 points in the games against Macedonia and Andorra and to go into the game against the Czech Republic as group leaders with maximum points.

- Will you be there against the Czechs?
- I don't think so. That's how I feel. Even if I am played at West Bromwich I still won't get called. Things are messed up in the national team, and it hurts me. The national team is a wound for me which hurts and hurts bad. But I will cheer on the boys and hope they beat all even without me.

Contra invaluable to Megson's plans
By Oliver Bhurrut

GARY Megson has revealed the arrival of Cosmin Contra will give him the
option of using the versatile Riccardo Scimeca elsewhere in his Premiership
side.

The Baggies manager believes the Romanian international right-back will be a
"valuable" asset to his defence after his season-long loan switch from
Atletico Madrid.

And it means Megson can take advantage of Scimeca's skills in another
position after the former Leicester man started the first four games of the
campaign at full-back.

An ankle injury which required surgery in October plagued Contra last season
but the Albion manager is hoping the former AC Milan defender can get his
career back on track at The Hawthorns.

"Cosmin has played for some big clubs and had some big money moves," said
Megson.

"He's not had the best year in terms of injuries but we needed players with
Premiership experience and he will be a valuable addition to our defence.

"It also enables us to move Riccardo Scimeca if we want to."

Contra hits out at Atletico treatment

New West Brom signing Cosmin Contra has launched a stinging attack on the treatment he received from former club Atletico Madrid.

Contra took advantage of the last day before the transfer window closed to sign a season-loan deal with the Baggies after a two-year spell with Atletico.

The Romanian full-back arrived from AC Milan two years ago, but only made 34 league appearances - 31 of which came in his first season - for Atletico.

"I am very disappointed with Atletico Madrid,'' he said. "I left Milan with the hope of winning titles in this team and to be a success in Spanish football and now I am going out through the back door.

"All I can do now is show them they have made a mistake, but if I say I am disappointed, it's because it's true.''

Contra is also angry that he only found out the club wanted to release him when his options became limited.

"I don't know if it was the coach or those in charge who decided I should leave, but I wish they had told me a long time earlier, because I had offers from some important teams,'' he claimed. "I always thought I could play for Atletico and in the end I am going to England.''

Yeah I think we are all optomistic at present
If we'd signed DAbo, Dindane and Huszti I think we would certainly make middle table.

Contra "delighted" with Albion move
By Oliver Bhurrut

COSMIN Contra trained with Albion for the first time this morning (Thursday)
and then insisted: "It's always been my dream to play in the Premiership."

The Romanian international put pen to paper on a season-long loan hours
before Tuesday's transfer deadline.

And the 28-year-old right-back is now hoping to prove he can cut it among
England's elite after spells in Serie A and the Primera Liga.

"I'm very delighted to be at West Brom because it's one of my dreams to play
in the Premiership," said the on-loan Atletico Madrid star.

"I hope I can play very well for this team.

"I watched a lot of Premiership football in Spain on television every week.

"I think my game will suit the Premiership.

"The Premiership is the most powerful league in the world. There are many
good players in it."

An ankle injury plagued Contra last season but that did not stop several
European clubs chasing his signature.

The former AC Milan defender admitted, however, Albion's persistence
persuaded him to move to the Black Country.

"I had offers from other teams but in the end I came because West Brom kept
pushing and pushing for me," he added.

"I want to prove I'm free of injury now and that I am a good player.

"I want to help this team to stay in the Premiership."

I still remember that final between Liverpool and Alaves. I was really impressed by Cosmin Contra. He was everywhere that evening and was IMO the Man of the Match.

He went to AC Milan and I kept following him, so I could see it wasn't an one in a lifetime performance. He impressed me again with his runs along the sideline. I lost track of him and suddenly he was sold to Atletico and now he's playing for a small team like West Bromwich Albion, I don't get it anymore. What is this world coming to ?

Were you impressed that night? He played a lot of games better that season ,and the previous one, in the Spanish league. He was fantastic vs Liverpool, but he was pure magic in every game with Alaves.

Injuries and a coach that refused to give him a chance contributed to his downfall....A few years ago he was considered one of the best right-backs in Europe... Hopefully he'll get back in form.
