Hulse admits problem last season

Stomach 'bugs' Hulse
By Oliver Bhurrut

ROB Hulse has revealed how a battle against a persistent stomach injury
dogged him during the second half of Albion's promotion-winning campaign.

The former Crewe striker got off to a flying start at The Hawthorns,
notching 12 goals in his first 20 games following his £750,000 switch from
Gresty Road last July.

But after his crucial double triggered a stunning comeback in November's 4-3
win at West Ham, the Baggies hotshot went off the boil with just one strike
in his next 18 appearances.

"I struggled a lot last season with a stomach injury which kicked in about
November," said Hulse.

"The reason it happened was coming from a club like Crewe to a big club like
West Brom where the training is totally different, more intense.

"Eventually my stomach just broke down and it was a case of keeping it going
until the end of the season."

The 24-year-old hitman admitted the last eight months have been frustrating
but he is now looking forward to his first crack at the Premiership.

And after easing through Albion's first pre-season training session
yesterday (Wednesday), he is confident he will be back to full fitness in
time for the Baggies' opener at Blackburn on Saturday, August 14 (ko 3pm).

"I've done a lot of work over the summer and although the problem is not
totally behind me, I'm hopeful I'll get it right during pre-season and it
will be ready for the big kick-off," he insisted.

"To ensure it is I'm doing lots of 'core' stability work.

"It's nothing to worry about. My stomach just needs time to knit back up.

"At the moment, I'm feeling really fit and I managed to cope with the first
pre-season training session fairly comfortably.

"I'm just going to concentrate on getting myself right and then hopefully
the rest will slot into place.

"This is my first full pre-season with Albion and the lads have told me how
hard it's going to be."

Cardiff agree fee for Hulse

By Sid Collins
Date: 30/8/2004

According to Lennie Lawrence, Cardiff City have agreed a fee with Albion for
Rob Hulse. Hulse has just recovered from a stomach injury and, after Baggies
signing of Robert Earnshaw from Cardiff, is now about 4th or 5th choice
striker. More to follow.

Well that one didnlt happen but this one did.

West Bromich Albion striker Rob Hulse is set to move to the Championship outfit Stoke in a deal worth over £1m.

The 25-year-old has to agree personal terms with Stoke and undergo a medical before the deal can be completed.

Hawthorns chairman Jeremy Peace said: "Stoke City have been keen to sign Rob for some time and their latest offer has now matched our valuation."

Hulse joined Albion in 2003 but has made just five substitute appearances during their Premiership campaign.

Baggies boss Bryan Robson added: "I feel Rob needs first-team football to go forward in his career and as we've now got Robert Earnshaw, Kevin Campbell, Geoff Horsfield and Kanu ahead of him in the squad his opportunities will be limited.

"It is a very good offer from Stoke and good business for Albion."

but then again ...

Striker Hulse rejects Stoke move

West Brom striker Rob Hulse has rejected the chance to join Stoke City in a £1.2m deal.

The Baggies agreed the fee before the weekend but the player opted not to move to the Britannia Stadium after talks with the Championship club.

Hulse, 25, who joined Albion from Crewe 18 months ago, has struggled to make an impact in the Premiership.

Meanwhile, WBA have opened negotiations with 26-year-old utility man Neil Clement over a new contract.

The former Chelsea player's current deal runs out this summer and Albion boss Bryan Robson is keen to extend his five-year stay at the Hawthorns.

Robson's number two Nigel Pearson confirmed: "Neil has already been offered a new contract and he has done really well for us in three or four positions."

Hulse to join Palace?

By Site Staff
Date: 25/1/2005

West Brom striker Rob Hulse is the latest to be linked with Palace in
the transfer window, with time quickly running out.

Iain Dowie's plans for a squad boost in the window haven't yet come
about but that could all change if the talk of Hulse is true.

Dowie has made a striker his number one prioity as he looks to lift
the burden of goals off the shoulders of Andy Johnson.

The news that it is former Crewe man Hulse won't be met with too much
excitement from the Palace faithful. Hulse is struggling to get games with
fellow relegation battlers West Brom.

Hulse has got goals in him though. His haul of goals three years ago
helped Crewe back into the First Division and secured him a move to the
Baggies. He started like a house on fire in the Midlands but lost his place
after injury and has since struggled to return to the side.

Skysports.com can confirm Leeds are in talks with West Brom to sign Rob Hulse.

Leeds boss Kevin Blackwell is on the lookout for a new striker to bolster his squad and has made Hulse his top target.

Hulse seems set to leave West Brom after dropping down the pecking order of strikers at the club.

The 25-year-old has made just seven substitute appearances this season and is keen on a move away to secure regular first team football.

Hulse rejected a move to Stoke last week and Leeds have moved to try and lure him to Elland Road.

The player's agent Stephen Hughes revealed talks are underway between both clubs over a possible loan deal.

Leeds and West Brom are both currently talking over a possible loan deal," Hughes told skysports.com

"It could be a three-month loan deal with an option of a permanent move.

"Rob is keen to be playing regularly and there has been interest from a number of top Championship clubs.

"I am just waiting on the outcome of the talks between Leeds and West Brom and will take it from there."

oh it just drags on and on ...

Leeds United have failed to loan in West Bromwich Albion striker Rob Hulse
and now hope to complete the three-month deal next week.

Leeds Chief Operating Officer Shaun Harvey told his club's official website:
"We have been unable to complete the loan signing of Rob Hulse from West
Bromwich Albion in time for tomorrow's game against Burnley, however, it is
anticipated that it wil be concluded in the early part of next week."

Leeds manager Kevin Blackwell added: "It's no secret that we need more
firepower, you only have to look at our goals for column in the league table
to see that.

"We are creating chances but not finishing them off, and to be fair we knew
that would be a problem at the start of the season which is why I targeted
another striker and a wide left player.

"Rob is a proven striker and there aren't many of them around at this
level."

HULSE DEAL CLOSE

Leeds manager Kevin Blackwell is closing in on signing West Brom striker Rob
Hulse.

Technicalities prevented Hulse from completing a three-month loan move
before Saturday's 1-0 victory at Burnley, although the 27-year-old did watch
his potential new team-mates in action at Turf Moor.

"Rob came with us to Burnley and hopefully we can sort one or two things
out," said Blackwell.

"He's the right age, fits the mould and has a great strike record so there's
a lot of positives.

"We couldn't do the loan deal in time last week so let's hope we do it
soon."

Leeds the only place for me - Hulse

New Leeds striker Rob Hulse needed little convincing over a move to Elland
Road where he hopes to get his career back on track after a year of
frustration at West Brom.

Hulse has joined Leeds on loan until the end of the season. The club
confirmed the deal on Wednesday to ensure he is available for the final game
of the Championship campaign at home to Rotherham.

There was interest from promotion-chasing Ipswich, Wigan and Sunderland for
Hulse, who turned his back on a £1.2m move to Stoke to join Leeds.

His arrival could provide the impetus the club need to make one final
concerted effort for a top-six finish.

Hulse is initially delighted to be given the opportunity to play again after
being frozen out at The Hawthorns.

Following a £750,000 move from Crewe in the summer of 2003, where he scored
51 goals in 131 appearances, Hulse top scored for Albion last season with 13
goals to help steer the club back into the Premiership.

But he has made just seven substitute appearances this term and said: "I see
this as the ideal opportunity to get me playing football again.

"I'm under no illusions. I need to be playing football and I see Leeds
United as the best place to be.

"I'd been told quite a few clubs had come in for me and wanted to take me
out on loan, but as soon as I knew Leeds were interested - well, it's a
massive club.

"It didn't take much selling. It's Leeds United. You come to the training
ground and there's everything here to make a footballer get better, stronger
and fitter.

"It's just a case now of getting match fitness under my belt and hopefully
that won't take too long because I've looked after myself and I've worked
extremely hard in the gym and after training."

Hulse's arrival gives Blackwell the opportunity to revert to a 4-4-2
formation, with Northern Ireland striker David Healy joining the new recruit
in attack as he has so far often been deployed wide left of a 4-3-3.

"It's been no secret we've needed another forward," said Blackwell, who has
offered chances to Brian Deane, Julian Joachim and Michael Ricketts.

"We've been creating chances, but not finishing them off, which has been a
concern since the beginning of the season.

"But the chairman [Ken Bates] has come in and said if we can do something on
loan then we will do it, and I'm delighted we have been able to bring Rob
in.

"Now we have a player who is a proven striker at this level. He's the right
age, fits the mould and has a great strike record - one in 2.7 - so there's
a lot of positives."

Hulse can improve - Ellis

Leeds fans can expect plenty more from two-goal hero Rob Hulse, according to
assistant boss Sam Ellis.

The West Brom striker, on loan at Elland Road until the end of the season,
marked his debut with a stunning double as Leeds swept aside Reading 3-1 on
Saturday.

"He's only played seven reserve games before arriving here, which is not an
awful lot, so we think he'll get better as time goes on," said Ellis.

"Maybe it was adrenalin that carried him through - but if he can better than
that then we'll be delighted.

"We'd been chasing him for a good while. He will definitely improve us up
front. He gives us good options and you can't have enough good players in
the squad."

Hulse had failed to force himself into former West Brom boss Gary Megson's
first-team plans following promotion to the Premiership and by the time
Bryan Robson arrived at The Hawthorns he had fallen down the pecking order.
