Lithuania - France

Cesnauskis given second chance
3/7/2007

Edgaras Cesnauskis has been recalled to the Lithuania squad for their UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifiers against France, at home on 24 March, and the visit to Ukraine four days later.

Suspension lifted
Following a four-match suspension and a spell in the international wilderness, the 23-year-old FC Saturn Moskovskaya Oblast midfielder has been named in a 29-man squad by coach Algimantas Liubinskas for the back-to-back qualifiers. "We hope this young player has changed his attitude about football and life in general," said Liubinskas. "Edgaras can prove that the team needs him. The interests of the national team should be more important than someone's personal ambitions."

Injury blows
The return of Cesnauskis is offset by the absence of Heart of Midlothian FC pair Deividas Cesnauskis and Nerijus Barasa through injury, while their team-mate at the Scottish Premier League club, Saulius Mikoliunas, is included in the squad but is doubtful. Lithuania go into the fixtures fifth in Group B, five points adrift of joint leaders Scotland and France but with a game in hand.

Lithuania squad
Goalkeepers: Žydrunas Karčemarskas (FC Dinamo Moskva), Mindaugas Malinauskas (FBK Kaunas), Saulius Klevinskas (FK Suduva), Paulius Gribauskas (FC Otelul Galati).

Defenders: Andrius Skerla (FK Vetra), Tomas Zvirgzdauskas (Halmstads BK), Rolandas Dziaukstas (FC Saturn Moskovkaya Oblast), Marius Stankevicius (Brescia Calcio), Irmantas Zelmikas (SC Tavria Simferopol), Marius Žaliukas (Heart of Midlothian FC), Gediminas Paulauskas (FK Ekranas), Arunas Klimavicius (FC Dinamo Moskva), Vidas Alunderis (Zaglebie Lubin).

Midfielders: Saulius Mikoliunas (Heart of Midlothian FC), Edgaras Cesnauskis (FC Saturn Moskovskaya Oblast), Deividas Cesnauskis (PFC CSKA Moskva), Tomas Tamošauskas (FHK Liepajas Metalurgs), Mindaugas Kalonas (FHK Liepajas Metalurgs), Darius Miceika (FHK Liepajas Metalurgs), Mantas Savenas (FK Ekranas), Andrius Gedgaudas (FC Inter Baku), Igoris Morinas (FK Žalgiris Vilnius).

Strikers: Edgaras Jankauskas (Heart of Midlothian FC), Andrius Velicka (Heart of Midlothian FC), Tomas Danilevicius (Bologna FC), Tomas Radzinevicius (SK Kladno), Robertas Poškus (FC Zenit St. Petersburg), Ricardas Beniušis (FBK Kaunas), Vitalijus Kavaliauskas (FK Ekranas).

On the French side, Henry and Saha are really doubtfull, and will probably miss the game. Ribéry is out. The complete list will be unveiled the 15th.

What could be Lithuania 's strongest line-up ?

Henry is over

Thierry Henry will miss the rest of the season after damaging stomach and groin muscles during the Gunners midweek 1-1 draw with PSV Eindhoven.

The French striker started on the bench at the Emirates Stadium in the Champions League last 16 clash, but was clearly not fully fit and ultimately hobbled off at full time after sustained the double injury.

The latest injuries have sidelined the World Cup finalist for at least three months, meaning he will play no further part in Arsenal's season.

"Thierry Henry will be out for a minimum of three months," Arsene Wenger told the club's official website. "Unfortunately this means he will now miss the rest of this season both domestically and internationally, but we are confident that he will be ready for the start of next season."

Arsenal have just Champions League qualification left to play for this season, after having been knocked out of all three cup competitions over the past few weeks. The Gunners currently occupy the fourth and final coveted spot, a point behind Liverpool in third and five ahead of Bolton.

good luck with this game, a huge match for sure

Big games are easy than the other games, unfortunately. Every times we have the control the games, under the control the games, during the games we had the some possibilities, some big chances, some big okazyons, something like that but what can I do, sometimes? And….it’s the football, that’s the football, something happened. Everything is something happened. - Fatih Terim

Edgaras Cesnauskis (the wee ****) again refused to play for the NT. Think this is the last time we ever see him called up. Think he will be sorry in a few years.

The manager criticised him after he got an idiotic red card in a very important game against Bosnia. After that Cesnauskis stated that he will never play while Liubinskas is in charge of the NT. Later he stated that if there's to be compromise the manager needs to make the first step. Now Liubinskas did that and the wee ned still refused. Anyway this is the version avaivable to the wide masses but there is talk that all this started even earlyer while we played Spain. Cesnauskis was ordered to warm up but he refused. Anyway we need players with his skills but we don't his attidute. You play for the country and not the manager. Liubinskas is a good idiot too but no one is bigger than the team or the manager. Cesnauskis seems to forget this. In no normal country a player is bigger that the manager. Look and Ireland... they even kicked out their legent Keane at one time.

Vieira is out too. Good for us, bad for them we allways get good results against the "super" teams so a draw is very possible. And we havent lost more than 2-0 against such teams for 6 years now so in any case the result will be respectable

Maybe E.Cesnauskis sometimes was too naive and arrogant (youth, etc), but so is Liubinskas. At his age I expect him to be wiser and deal more reasonably with the situation. He also said ugly things about some other players publicly, instead of talking directly to them.
So maybe E.Cesnauskis has a reason to avoid NT. You don't want to deal with people who humiliate you. And call off to NT is not an apology.

I didint expect nothing more from an Ekranas fan (no offence) don't let the club affiliation cloud your judgement. He can follow his brothers foot steps and wind up in Romanov's gang oh so so quickly

Anyway do you think that a player should be above the manager? Managers all over the world bash their players and have said much worse things than Liubinskas did. The kid needs to learn how to handle criticism. Liubinskas is not an ideal person but Cesnauskis Jr. is not far behind him.

I would say that the situation is 51/49 in favour of Liubinskas

We don't know what exactly happened between them, so it's hard to decide who's more responsible.
E.Cesnauskis looked stupid and childish, on the pitch too. And I'm not denying that. But manager's method only pours oil on the flame. Nobody educates kids mortifying them.

Club affiliation influences fact that his brother is dead for me.

Cesnauskis exile continues

FC Saturn Moskovskaya Oblast midfielder Edgaras Cesnauskis has turned down an opportunity to return to the Lithuania fold despite being named in the squad to face France and Ukraine.

Disagreement
The 23-year-old was banned for four matches and then overlooked from late 2005 having fallen out with coach Algimantas Liubunskas, who put aside his differences with Cesnauskis to select him for the games on 24 and 28 March. However, the player "has not forgotten" the disagreement and will take no part in the Group B double-header according to senior official Robertas Tautkus.

Lietuva can get a surprise here IMO, at least a draw. Anyway, France will have a hard time!

Dievs, svētī Latviju!
