The Baltic showdown: ESTONIA-LATVIA

65 years...

It was 65 years ago when Estonia beat Latvia last time. It was on June 18th 1940, when we won the match 2-1. Both estonia nad latvia were formally still independent at that time, but the truth is that Soviet occupation was well on the way back then. Therefore, celebrations after the match grew into spontaneous demonstration against foreign oppressors. Huge number of people (estimated at 20000) marched towards Presidential Castle near the stadium, where President Konstantin Päts (soon to be captured and later killed by bolsheviks) greeted the people. Three days later Estonian Soviet Republic was announced.

So, it's about time to beat Latvia again. After regaining independence, Estonia and Latvia have met 14 times. The result is embarrasing to Estonia: 4 draws and 10 defeats. This time the hopes are up, after drawing with Latvia away 1-1, people are expeting a victory from tomorrow's encounter.

But unfortunately we have many injury problems, especially in midfield. Reim, Lindpere, Klavan, Rähn are all out. Only half-decent central midfielder we have fit is Liivo Leetma. Who will partner him in midfield is not certain yet, based on training matches it's probably inexperienced Aleksander Dimitriev.
From defence we are missing both our starting fullbacks U.Rooba nad Allas, also Saviauk. Recent Arsenal siging Poom will not be fit to play, so it's Kotenko in goal again. In attack we will have to do without Zahovaiko and Sharov, but it's unlekly that thye would have been starters anyway.

I'm expecting following lineup:

-------------Viikmäe

Terehhov------Oper-----Smirnov

-------Leetma--Dimitriev

Kruglov--Piiroja--Stepanov--Jääger

-------------Kotenko

Does anybody have any idea about Latvia's lineup? I would be thankful if somebody posts it.

Big games are easy than the other games, unfortunately. Every times we have the control the games, under the control the games, during the games we had the some possibilities, some big chances, some big okazyons, something like that but what can I do, sometimes? And….it’s the football, that’s the football, something happened. Everything is something happened. - Fatih Terim

Should be a great game ! Do you know how many Latvian will travel to Tallinn ?

I think Latvia has maybe shown a weaker form than Estonia so far in those qualifying but that last result against Russia has certainly brought some confidence to the team.

BTW Latvia U21 has beaten the Estonian side tonight : 3 - 1

Latvija: Šteinbors, Žuravļovs, Ivanovs, Kļava, Jemeļins, Kirhners, I. Semjonovs, Višņakovs, Rafaļskis, Blanks, Malašenoks.

Goals : Ahjupera (85.) - Višņakovs (57.), Blanks (62.), Ivanovs (90)

About the line-up of tomorrow game, i guess it will be not far from the Russia game of 2 weeks ago :
Latvija: Koļinko, Stepanovs, Astafjevs, Smirnovs, Laizāns, Zirnis, Korabļovs, Bleidelis, Verpakovskis, Rubins, Rimkus (Prohorenkovs, 77).

Great game from us, I would even say it was the best NT performance I've ever witnessed live at the stadium. Considering how many players we missed due injuries, it was pleasantly surprising how well we controlled this game. Latvia never got a chance, we dominated from the start. To be honest, we should have won more than
2-1,; we wasted quite many good chances today. TVMK's midfielder Leetma was IMO our best player tonight, it was mostly thanks to him that we dominated the midfield. Also Smirnov with his dribbling at the right wing was great, clearly the most entertaining player we have right now. Andres Oper also deserves praise, he has been our most consistent performer and most important player for years. Defense has earned credit too, Latvia got very few good chances today. Before the goal, they only had one great chance, but Kotenko made a great save.

And of course the second goal was hilarious Seeing Latvia's keeper rushing out to tackle the ball away, I thought: "What a great positioning, it could have been a certain goal chance", and then he misses the ball completely, Smirnov goes past him and goes through alone, runs about 20 metres with nobody there to stop him and rolls it into the empty goal from close range.

Dmitrijev was really good imo. together with Piiroja, Oper and Kruglov one of the best. I agree with Andy, we should have won by more. Funny that we wasted lots of 100% chances but scored some pretty lucky goals.
Wonder me, why the Latvian sector was that quiet? :P
