Livonia cup 2005

By Margus Luik

After an inexperienced national team lost both their matches at the King's Cup in Thailand, the next major event on the horizon for Estonian football fans is the 3rd Livonia Cup on 9 January.

Latvian opponents
The competition will pit Estonian champions FC Levadia Tallinn against their Latvian counterparts, Skonto FC, at their opponents' indoor arena in Riga. The match, instigated by the Estonian Football Association (EJL), marks a long relationship between the two countries, which were united under the Order of Livonia between the 14th and 16th centuries. Skonto have won both previous editions, twice beating FC Flora in a penalty shootout.

Retiring players
Levadia will take on Flora without two of their most seasoned players, Argo Arbeiter and Mati Pari, both of whom have decided to retire rather than extend their contracts with the club. The two friends from Viljandi have spent much of their careers together and have now decided to retire in unison.

That's a really pointless fixture, I must say. I don't know about Lativia, but here in Estonia it gets practically no media attention. The time of the match is somewhat strange too, in the middle of the off-season. Both teams are probably totally out of form. I don't know, maybe that's the idea in behind arranging this competetion in the first place - to give the players some playing experience between two seasons.

Big games are easy than the other games, unfortunately. Every times we have the control the games, under the control the games, during the games we had the some possibilities, some big chances, some big okazyons, something like that but what can I do, sometimes? And….it’s the football, that’s the football, something happened. Everything is something happened. - Fatih Terim

We need something like Scandinavian Royal League. But I don't know when it could be played due to region's weather and pitch conditions in late autumn/winter/early spring.
Though weather in Scandinavia is even worse.
