Defenders dominate Bolivia squad to face Brazil :lazy:

LA PAZ, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Cautious Bolivia have named three goalkeepers, nine defenders and only two forwards in a 20-man squad for their World Cup qualifier away to Brazil next month.

Mexican-based striker Joaquin Botero and Milton Coimbra, who is currently without a club, were the only strikers named by coach Ramiro Blacut for the game in Sao Paulo on September 5.

Bolivia have a long history of heavy defeats against the world champions and have conceded 11 goals on their last two visits.

They were beaten 5-0 in Rio de Janeiro in a World Cup qualifier in September 2000 and trounced 6-0 in a friendly in Goiania in January 2002.

Central defender Marcelo Carballo and full back Percy Colque both return after injury and 35-year-old midfielder Luis Cristaldo, a survivor from Bolivia's last World Cup finals appearance in 1994, is also back in the squad.

Cristaldo missed the 3-2 defeat to Ecuador in June because of suspension.

Bolivia are bottom of the 10-team South American World Cup qualifying group with six points from seven games -- all won at home in La Paz where they play at 3,600 metres above sea level.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Leonardo Fernandez (Oriente Petrolero), Jose Carlos Fernandez (Santa Fe, Colombia), Sergio Galarza (Wilstermann)

Defenders: Lorgio Alvarez (Oriente Petrolero), Ronald Arana (Oriente Petrolero), Marcelo Carballo (The Strongest), Percy Colque (Bolivar), Luis Gatty Ribeiro (Bolivar), Sergio Jauregui (Blooming), Juan Manuel Pena (Valladolid, Spain), Ronald Raldes (Rosario Central, Argentina), Oscar Sanchez (Bolivar)

Midfielders: Luis Cristaldo (The Strongest), Walter Flores (San Jose), Gonzalo Galindo (Bolivar), Limbert Pizarro (Bolivar), Ruben Tufino (Bolivar), Limberg Gutierrez (Bolivar)

Forwards: Joaquin Botero (UNAM/Pumas, Mexico), Milton Coimbra (no club).

Injury has forced Brazil duo Luis Fabiano and Diego out of next weekend's World Cup qualifier against Bolivia.
Midfielder Diego was injured playing for Porto in the Portuguese Super Cup while Sao Paulo striker Luis Fabiano is still recovering from the left thigh problem which has kept him sidelined for the last three weeks.

Nilmar, who signed for French side Lyon from Internacional on Friday, has been called up to replace Luis Fabiano.

Brazil's Ronaldinho doubtful for Bolivia match

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 30 (Reuters) -

Brazil striker Ronaldinho is doubtful for Sunday's World Cup qualifier at home to Bolivia because of an ankle injury, team doctor Jose Luis Runco said on Monday.

Ronaldinho, who missed Barcelona's opening match of the Spanish league season against Racing Santander at the weekend, would be examined when he arrived in Brazil on Tuesday, Runco told the Estado news agency.

"I'm aware of the problem and tomorrow (Tuesday) we'll talk and see how he's reacting to treatment," Runco said.

Ronaldinho also missed Brazil's previous two World Cup qualifiers in June against Argentina and Chile because of injury.

The world champions lead the South American World Cup qualifying group with 13 points from seven games and are still unbeaten.

Bolivia trail the ten-team group with six points and have lost all their away games.

Brazil pull injured defender Juan out of squad

TERESOPOLIS, Brazil, Sept 1 (Reuters) -

Brazil have pulled central defender Juan out of their squad for Sunday's World Cup qualifier at home to Bolivia because of injury.

Juan, who plays for German club Werder Bremen, was involved in a clash of heads during a Bundesliga match against Bayern Munich at the weekend and spent two days in hospital, coach Carlos Alberto Parreira told reporters.

Parreira said Juan, who had an excellent Copa America last month when he appeared to have won a regular place in the team, had been told by doctors to rest until the weekend.

However, he will be joining up with the squad again for next Wednesday's friendly against Germany in Berlin.

Juan's withdrawal leaves Cris, Roque Junior and Luisao as the squad's three central defenders.

The world champions, who lead the 10-nation South American qualifying group with 13 points from seven games, have been plagued by injuries in the last week.

Gustavo Nery, reserve to Roberto Carlos at left-back, midfielder Diego and striker Luis Fabiano have all pulled out through injury and Ronaldinho is still doubtful.

Brazil have also left out five players who did not take part in the friendly in Haiti earlier this month.

AC Milan trio Kaka, Dida and Cafu were all dropped along with Bayern Munich pair Ze Roberto and Lucio.

Parreira suggested the players should have exerted some pressure on their clubs, who refused to release them for what was dubbed the 'Peace Game'.

Revised squad:

Goalkeepers: Fabio (Vasco da Gama), Julio Cesar (Flamengo)

Defenders: Belletti (Villareal, Spain), Maicon (Monaco, France), Cris (Cruzeiro), Luisao (Benfica, Portugal), Roque Junior (Bayer Leverkusen, Germany), Leandro (Cruzeiro), Roberto Carlos (Real Madrid, Spain)

Midfielders: Edmilson (Barcelona, Spain), Gilberto Silva (Arsenal, England), Julio Baptista (Sevilla, Spain), Alex (Fenerbahce, Turkey), Renato (Sevilla, Spain), Edu (Arsenal, England), Juninho Pernambucano (Olympique Lyon, France)

Forwards: Adriano (Inter Milan, Italy), Nilmar (Internacional), Ronaldinho (Barcelona, Spain), Ronaldo (Real Madrid, Spain), Robinho (Santos).

Brazil without five key players in this match. Dida, Cafu, Kaka, Lucio and Ze Roberto have been dropped after conflicts between their clubs and the national team about last month's friendly in Haiti.

Bolivia will be play with their best team, including the return of hard-worker midfielder Luis Cristaldo, who missed the 3-2 defeat by Ecuador because of suspension in their previous World Cup qualifier match.

Brazil give 2 1/4 on AH, and it looked so big. Honestly at first, I thought about backing Bolivia. But after I think for a while, I decide to put my money on Brazil.

Even without 5 key players, Brazil still have world-class team. They already proved it when they won the Copa America 2004 with their 2nd team, beating Argentina by penalties in the final.

On the other hand, I think Bolivia is the worst team in South America football at the moment. They only can get some positive result when playing at home. They're really struggling when playing away match.

So I think Brazil will dominate the whole match from the first minute, and I'm optimist a lot of goals will came.

Brazil overpower Bolivia in World Cup qualifier

SAO PAULO, Sept 5 (Reuters) -

Ronaldo and Ronaldinho were both on target as Brazil powered to a 3-1 win over Bolivia in their World Cup qualifier on Sunday.

Bolivia fielded four defenders and four defensive midfielders in an attempt to keep the world champions at bay but their plans were shattered as Brazil romped to a 2-0 lead in only 13 minutes.

Adriano, who scored seven goals in the Copa America when Ronaldo was rested, added the third just before halftime.

Bolivia brought on even more defenders after the break and pulled one back through midfielder Luis Cristaldo while their goalkeeper Leo Fernandez pulled off several world class saves to deny Brazil further goals.

Brazil went back to the top of the 10-nation South American group with 16 points from eight games while Bolivia stayed bottom with six.

"It was a good result and an excellent performance," said Ronaldo.

Bolivia have conceded 11 goals in their previous two visits to Brazil and were quickly in trouble as they left Ronaldo unmarked to fire home from close range after only 55 seconds, his seventh goal of the qualifiers.

The visitors were in further trouble when Cristaldo upended Roque Junior in the penalty area and Ronaldinho fired home from the spot in the 13th minute.

Brazil turned on the style to the delight of the 72,000 crowd, Ronaldinho firing over in the 26th minute after a flowing move down the right.

Sometimes too clever for their own good, Brazil added a third before halftime when Adriano outjumped the defence for his first goal of the qualifiers.

Brazil enjoyed less freedom after halftime as wingback Percy Colque was replaced with the more defensive Ruben Tufino and Luis Gatti Ribero was substituted by central defender Ronald Arana.

Bolivia reduced the deficit in the 49th minute when Cristaldo, a survivor from Bolivia's last World Cup appearance in 1994, shot from the edge of the area with the ball deflecting off a defender and left goalkeeper Julio Cesar wrong-footed.

Juninho Pernambucano was narrowly wide from the edge of the penalty area and Bolivia goalkeeper Leo Fernandez saved from Ronaldo with his legs as Brazil pressed for a fourth.

Gilberto Silva had the ball in the Bolivia net in the 90th minute but his effort was disallowed because of pushing by Roque Junior.
