UPL 2013/2014

Now that we finally know which teams will be participating in the new season, I decided to write a new thread for the forthcoming 2013/2014 UPL season.

After a nonsensical period where Kryvbas sadly ceased to exist, Stal Alchevsk withdrew and where really Bukovyna should have actually been offered the spare UPL place, both Hoverla and Metalurg Zaporizhya maintain their places despite both being relegated (embarrassingly in Metalurg's case).

Sevastopol are therefore the only newcomers as champions of the Persha Liga. It's a club really on the rise at the moment. A new 25,000 seater stadium is planned to be constructed and completed in 2017. The Crimean club have a great fan-base and they always filled their 5,800 capacity stadium in the Persha Liga.

Sevastopol have got a good group of skillful players and play good passing football. Key players last season included Artur Karnoza, Volodymyr Tanchyk and Sergiy Kuznetsov, but they've made lots of signings in preparation, including 3 from Arsenal last winter with Alexandr Kovpak amongst them, as well as 3 loanees from Shakhtar.

Elsewhere, apart from Dynamo and Shakhtar, Arsenal and Chornomorets have been the busiest clubs. Of course, the mid-table clubs have taken all the players of Kryvbas in 2012/2013.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan looks set to leave. He hasn't returned for Shakhtar training and Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool are both interested. Shakhtar have been splashing the cash a lot recently. It'll be interesting to see how these new Brazilians fit in, particularly Wellington the new striker.

Metalist have signed one Brazilian for about 4.4m while Dnipro look set to sign Sergiy Polytilo from Chornomorets.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan signs for Borussia Dortmund. 21.5m approximately. Dynamo's squad is now worth more than Shakhtar's, according to transfermarkt! http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/pr...werb_UKR1.html

On paper the squad's look pretty even. I don't know if it's telling that Shakhtar only scored one goal in this recent tournament (Dynamo of course won!), but lets see what happens in the Super Cup on Wednesday and the match at the Donbass in the 4th round. What we can say is that they've lost 3 real top players. Excited about the new season!

They certainly can and probably will. Here are a couple of story telling stats: Over the last 10 years since 2002/2003, Dynamo's net loss on transfers is roughly 105m. Shakhtar, on the other hand, have only lost about 20m. Shakhtar in that time have sold 8 players for 10m euros or more. Dynamo? Just two. And even the price of Roman Eremenko and Ismael Bangoura combined doesn't reach Mkhitaryan's price. No need to say any more about that.

Don't forget Fred from Internacional, not to be confused with former Lyon striker. He costed 15m.

Salt, what are the chances of the Russian and Ukrainian leagues to merge? Not good?

Shakhtar wins the Super Cup 3-1.

I honestly didn't think Shakhtar played that well, but then they didn't need to play that well to win as Chornomorets weren't much of a threat. Shakhtar's attacking movement wasn't quite so fluent but they only fielded one new player - Fred. Chornomorets were ridiculously open on the counter-attack for their goals, which were well-finished by Fred.

Oleksiy Gai looks likely to be a good addition to Chornomorets' midfield alongside Kovalchuk, but they seriously need a good attacking midfield player with intelligent movement off the ball to improve.

so ukraine league starts today with Tavria-Zorya.

Tavria with a lot of financial problems, lost some players, coach changed,a greek come in,can not register new players.

Shakhtar and Dynamo will fight for the title.

Metalist and Dnipro unless make some signs will be 3 and 4,you would expect that Metalist with the champions league qual and finnishing second last year will try to make a step further but till now no.

Metalurh Donetsk no fans,no stadium but a rich president who keeps them as favourites for the fifth place.

Chornomorets,Arsenal and maybe Illichivets will fight for 5-6 place.

Sevastopol have a good stadium, fans, let's see what they can do.

zorya, tavria, volyn, karpaty, hoverla, zaporizha many of them with financial problems will fight for avoid relegation.

looks like Karpaty lost many starting players, this is a club who could be in top 5,6 but no money.

so overall it will continue to be a league with a top 4 and the rest.........

Nice summary Kleber. Zorya certainly deserved their 2-0 win today. Two great goals from Khomchenovskiy. Tavriya could struggle for a bit without new players and they can't rely on a veteran Nazarenko and a thin squad.
