Ukrainian clubs in European cups 12/13

It's a shame to have to start the thread at this point. A terrible night for football in Ukraine.

However, there is at least some good news which I'll start with! I think Dnipro will be seeded for tomorrow's play-off draw as they're in the top 31 clubs out of the 62 draw. Dangerous clubs include Anzhi, Dinamo Moskva, Bursaspor and Feyenoord.

I saw a bit of both games. Metalurh Donetsk crashed out 1-0 and 2-1 on aggregate to Tromso of Norway, a well organised team which Metalurh just couldn't break down. The coach made a mistake in bringing on the donkey Traore. He offered nothing. Nelson was good - he should have played at centre forward.

Arsenal also crashed out after the fiasco with Eric Matoukou. The first red card was harsh - not clear. Mura then just defended and Arsenal had loads of chances to make it 3-3 on aggregate. It really should have been in fact. Mura are one of the worst teams I've ever seen in European competition. It'll be interesting if they draw someone like Liverpool in the next round because it could definitely end at about 15-0 over two legs! Hopefully they'll draw Metalist or Dnipro of course :hopeful:

It's a shame overall. I really enjoyed Vorskla's adventure in Europe last year. Arsenal are a team of similar talent. Dnipro will have to compensate and benefit the coefficient rating by maybe reaching the last 32, which is possible. Dynamo qualifying for the CL would also bring bonus points

Yeah, sucks for arsenal, mura is no better than the team m.donetsk played in the previous round.

dynamo bucharest-metalist
liberec-dnipro.
moenglabch-dynamo

it will be a nightmare for ukraine if one of metalist or dnipro or both will be eliminated.
time for dnipro to make something in europe.

as for dynamo kyiv don't know what to think....

Any chance that Arsenal's appeal will see them reinstated? Because I would rather see Lazio play Mura than Arsenal, you know.

“But we're a university! We have to have a library!" said Ridcully. "It adds tone. What sort of people would we be if we didn't go into the library?"

"Students," said Senior Wrangler morosely.”

Europa league play-offs
Slovan Liberec 2-2 Dnipro
Dinamo Bucharest 0-2 Metalist

Dnipro played some good stuff in the first half. Aliev looks back in good shape again. I'm not quite sure how they managed to throw it away in the 2nd half. Still, if they play well in the 2nd leg they'll surely pass comfortably. If they score the first goal it should be a stroll in the park from there. Last 32 should still be the aim.

At least Metalist continue doing what they do best away from home in Europe

2-2 away is a good result, but not when you were 2-0 up and controlling the game. and not when you're a team looking to make the group stage for the first time since 2005. Terrible way to throw it away, they gave the initiative to the Czech's after the 2nd goal. They almost conceded in the 1st min of the game as well letting the home side go on a clear breakaway somehow the defenders caught up to him or the striker just f'd up and he didn't get his shot away, I'm not entirely sure because my heart was in my throat

Metalist played with 1 Ukrainian....the goalie

He made some world class saves, one on Munteanu's first time volley that swirved around the defender and was 100% going inside the far post.

He was Metalists best player

Metalist almost qualified.

Dnipro with that liberec late goal everything is yet to be decided.
The team looks shaky in defense.

Something worthy of significant mention:

Oleksandr Yakovenko, Anderlecht 's forgotten striker, is having the best period in his career. Today he came off the bench to secure the Belgian team's progress though to the CL Group stages for the first time since 2006. He scored a nice curling effort past the keeper, after playing a 1-2. In the previous round, he scored once and set up two as Anderkecht cruised past Ekranas in Lithuania in the 2nd leg.

In the league, he also scored the game winner against Mons this month, in a 2:1 game. Although, mostly used off the bench, this form prompted the coach to start Yakovenko against Lueven (this past Saturday). With only 10 minutes on the clock, Oleksandr registered yet another goal, despite the team going on to only tie 1:1.

Lets hope he can keep up the great form and secure a starting spot for the Group Stages. :hopeful: He is in fact being used on the left wing, as opposed to a striker position, and has been playing quite well there.

You can check out his goals in the CL on uefa.com or on www.ua-football.com/video. League highlights:

PSG aren't so bad - On paper, they're one of the strongest teams, but they've started the French league season with 3 draws so clearly there are a few problems there. Ajax were another of the pot 3 teams. Porto and PSG could both beat eachother so I don't think this group will have a leader way ahead of the rest.

Juventus and Chelsea are unfortunate draws but on their day Shakhtar could beat either team. Drawing Norsjaelland pretty much guarantees them European football next year.

Dnipro are now leading 2-1 against Slovan, who have 10 men. Fingers crossed for them!

Dnipro do it the tough way.

I believe that this year could be quite a strong one for Ukrainian coefficients :hopeful: Dnipro can perform better than Vorskla or Karpaty did in previous years just based on their roster. Metalist should do their typical thing in Europe.

As, for Shakhtar - its a tough group, but like Shevbrov said - the worst they can finish is in 3rd place. Dynamo Kyiv have an OKAY group, could've been worse. El Dragao is always a tough place to visit, but PSG don't have any chemistry and are not in any sort of form. Shame that Semin is coach :rollani: I think that Dinamo Zagreb could also take a few points off PSG and Kyiv tbh. If Porto's Hulk ends up going to Zenit, then that will also bolster Kyiv's hopes a little as well.

Dnipro prove a lot of doubters wrong and showed they can defend against good opponents. Played all game long with 10 men behind the ball and limited them to 8 shots. Massive win. If we can get Boateng back in the fold we have a pretty solid team. Sucks Fedetsky isn't included in the European roster though

Good result for Metalist on the road but we all know their not Ukrainian anyway at least its good for coefficients

Nice one Their work rate was pretty impressive, not the most exciting game but effective against what was a fairly ponderous PSV team.

Napoli beat AIK 4-0 with most of their star players rested. Now they just need to break the slight habit of losing goals to bad teams and catch an under-strength Napoli team out.

Decent point for Metalist away too
