Pre-ANC

It's time to get this place buzzing again ( as if it ever had any life )

Reigning Champions Egypt will play 3 friendly internationals prior to the trip to Ghana.

The Pharaohs kick-start their preparations on the 5th of January at home to minnows Namibia (a side we put 8 past in a WCQ 6 years ago) in the southern city of Aswan. Five days later the team will face Mali in Abu Dhabi, and finally we take on Angola in Lisbon on Jan the 13th.

Hassan Shehata has named a preliminary 32 man squad, which will be reduced to 23 after the opening friendly.

Mido, Mohamed Barakat (both injured) and Shikabala (suspended by FIFA) were not called-up.

National team newbies Ahmed Salama (Tersana, striker) and Mohsen Hendawy (Ghazl el Mahalla, right-back) have both been excluded due to injury.

The suspension only applies to the local level. Shikabala can catch Egypt's 2008 African Cup of Nations campaign in Ghana next January.

It's not Fifa that's banned him, it's the FA.

RIP MK-Inter

Nope, FIFA sanctioned him (like the article you've listed clearly indicates ) after the entire Zamalek-PAOK-military service fiasco, which I got to admit is pretty vague. What we know is that the EFA facilitated the transfer to Zamalek by sending a forged letter to the Greek FA to inform them that Shikabala is incapable of travelling outside Egypt due to his military commitments. Basically the EFA collaborated with Zamalek in order to trick PAOK. That created a bit of a stirr, but typically nothing was done over here.

You're probably confused because Shikabala was previously handed a suspension by the EFA after his misconduct in the Pan-African games (getting into a rift with the coach), but I'd like to clarify that the FIFA matter isn't related to what happened in the Pan-African games. The two sanctions are separate.

Hassan Shehata asked the FA to lift Shikabala's initial suspension, but then the FIFA ban was inflicted.. and in all fairness I'm not sure of its nature, be it local, international or both.

Egypt 3-0 Namibia

Amr Zaki (2) and Ahmed Hassan.

Didn't watch because it clashed with the Inter-Ajax friendly, but the proper tests will be against Mali and Angola.

Egypt 1-0 Mali

Hosny Abd Rabo (pen.)

Egypt 3-3 Angola

Emad Met'eb (Hattrick)

I saw neither games. For some reason I felt sleepy and went to bed, eventhough I had intended to sit down and watch. Anyway..
