Sergej Barbarez retires from int. football

Quote:
Bosnia-Herzegovina forward Sergej Barbarez and Republic of Ireland defender Kenny Cunningham have retired from international football after failing to captain their sides to the FIFA World Cup finals.

Out of contention
The 34-year-old Barbarez's team lost 1-0 to Serbia and Montenegro in Belgrade last night, leaving them third in qualifying Group 7 and out of the running. The Hamburger SV player spent seven years in the national squad, scoring 14 goals in 43 appearances, following his debut in a May 1998 friendly against Argentina.

'Full responsibility'
He said: "I am sorry we failed to qualify for Germany. The new two-year cycle for EURO 2008 is a long period, given my age. We did not fulfil our objectives and I am taking full responsibility. It is time for younger players to take my place."
Well, we knew it was coming.
He will be 36, 37 by Euro 2008.

Barbarez was my favourite player. What he did last night shows what a true captain he is. He has done so much for BIH fudbal. I hope in the future he stays in some way with the NT. I heard he may be interested in managing. I hope that is true.

I dont want to sound gay, but I love this man

LEGENDA SI PRAVA!!!

Good player, at one time wasn't he top scorer in the Bundesliga ? Particularly remember a goal he scored against Bayern in the last matchday couple years back which served to great benefit to Schalke.

Either way, I don't mean to start a riot ... but what the heck are this guy's roots ? I've always wondered about his name, seems more Russian than anything.

Legend indeed, tough I wish he could play til he was 45 it was no suprise. And he is right, time to give the young a chance. I bet a legend like Barbarez is in the "making".
But he will still be rememberd as one of the most heroic and important players in our NT no matter what. His feelings for Bosnia are big and I think many will remember him mostly for that

Legend!!

One of our best players since the start and it will be damn hard to find someone to replace him. Hopefully he will take some job at NSBiH when he decide to leave pro.football

Sad he never had the chance to experiance a Euro or World Cup because if its any player who deserves it then its him.

Good luck Barba!!

Not a better way to be remembered, IMO. In the end, even in loss, to the last second he fought for his country.

Here is how all BIH fans will remember him. This is a short clip where things got worse and worse in the stands, and how our captain shows why he is the captain.

KRALJ SI SERGEJ BARBAREZ!!!

I heard this the whole game from our commentators. The game was secondary to me.

This is a sad day for BiH fudbal, Barba has given so much to the NT, not to mention all the humanitarian work he has done. He is truly a legend and one of a kind. Thank you Barba for everything youv done for us.

SLOBODNA BOSNA broj 465 - Oktobar 13, 2005

Shalkea.
I Orucevic to efikasno obavio.

razmisljati...

without coming across as a pansy, this news has brought a tear to my eye... Barbarez is our best post war player and will be remembered for decedaes to come. He has a huge heart, unbreakable spirit and an unbelieavble love for his country, i have nothing but respect for this man. He is pure class as was proven by his decision to hang up the boots and give someone else a go

From a poster on another board:

Quote:

Its ironic how when BiH football was at its best, Barbarez a man with obvious Serbian heritage ran the show. When BiH as a nation thrived, King Tvrtko another Serb also ran the show.

Nice article.

You people SHOULD be proud of Barbarez. That is a real captain and human being. Those bomb sounds are scary even over the video, let alone being there.

All the while the crowd cheers, and Serbs here on XT deny it, make excuses or try and somehow justify what happened. Like the commentator said...strasno.
