Reaction to Velez relegation

This season Mostar lost one of its clubs to the 1st division, the famous Velez Mostar. This is the most shocking result in BiH football last season. To think, one of the Ygo liga's constant premier league teams was relegated in the BiH Liga !!

Although not Mostars oldest club, Velez had become the symbol of this city in the Yugo league and this a great loss to their fans and BiH football fans in general.

What are your reactions?

I personally feel that they let themselves down, poor preformances, shoddy organisation and a bad team combined to knock Velez out.

I was never really a fan, I supported Zeljo more back in those days. I have mixed feelings about their relegation, on the one hand I am an avid Zrinjski fan and this will undoubtedly make us stronger, on the other, there will be no more local derbies for Mostar unless we meet in the cup for at least one season. The derby had great atmosphere and the rivarly was predominantly sporting, with a lot of unpleasentness thrown into the mix.

Maybe, in time, the Mostarci will have two strong clubs competing in the top league, but for now its survival of the strongest, and Velez was nowhere near strong.

We"ll be back!!

It is a shame that Velez was relegated from the Premier Division but it was for the best........ We have been playing like shit all season long so I think Velez deserved to be relegated.

But I am shore that we will come back and once again and play derby games against "Zrinjski" at Bijeli Brijeg.
Hopefully Velez soon will be playing where he belongs at Bijeli Brijeg!!!

The situation surrounding the stdium is still hot, when the social, political, ethnic, economic etc. problems are sorted out, then Velez can try to lease the stadium again...for now, its too risky given all the above problems.

Given that Velez's most famous player (or so I think) is our current coach, I can only offer my commiserations to the club in being relegated and wish it the best in the following season getting back to the 1st Division where it belongs. Can't believe iut to tell you the truth.

Btw. When was the club formed?

FK Velez was formed in 1922, and it has been in the old league of Yugoslavia since 1945. Became the champions 3 times in the old league and won the Yugo Cup 2 times.

Yugo Cup Finals:

1981 Velez Mostar - Zeljeznicar Sarajevo 3-2
1986 Velez Mostar - Dinamo Zagreb 3-1

Football Legends that came from this club:

Boro Primorac, Assistant coach of FC Arsenal
Vahid Halihodzic, Head coach of FC PSG (Paris Saint-Germain)
Blaz Sliskovic, Head coach of Bosnian National Team
Meho Kodro, used to play for FC Barcelona
Sergej Barbarez, plays for FC Hamburg

and many many more!

Velez were never Yugo champions...they won 2 cups though.

Velez was formed in 1922
Zrinjski in 1905

The first derby in Mostar was 1923 and Zrinjski won 2-1

very sad indeed. It was very frustrating seeing them fail week in and week out.

I am a Zeljo fan but there is a certain amount of respect for teams with such great history as Velez.

Ero I must admit your attitude regarding this matter is very good for a zrinjski fan. Thumbs up
If you laugh on them, its like you laugh on yourself. I think you can gain a lot from having two sides in one city. From my point of view, strong Velez is also a stronger Zrinjski.
And there is no point talking about relegation of Velez. Everything is already said. They are club with great history - and now they are at the bottom of this funny league. I only hope they will be back soon.

I am very sad to see them relegated but hey that's how it works, if you don't perform then you don't get the right to compete at the top level. Hopefully they'll be back soon, bigger and better.

Mostar would benefit from 2 teams in the Prem league but i do think that they should both be allowed to use Bijeli Brijeg. I mean it would'n be the first time in history 2 teams have the same home ground. Just look at Milan....

You may dissapointed with what I will say next, but I feel Velez ceased to exist in 1992. For me at least, they;re not the same club anymore. In my opinion.

And yes I would like to see this Velez back in the first league, especially for the derbies, and the stadium will get sorted out as soon as other burning social problems are addressed. The political unrest in Mostar is glaringly obvious, and Velez would only further inflame the situation by demanding to play in NK Zrinjski's stadium.

RE: ERO

I think you are right when you said that Velez is not like he was before....... But who is???
We have been through a war so a lot of things have changed......

But you must admit that Velez does belong at " Bijeli Brijeg", wright?
But I also think that a lot of problems would appear if Velez were returned to "Bijeli Brijeg"

Why do Ultras Zrinjski call it "Stadion HSK Zrinjski"........
I do not understand.......

That's the official name of the Stadium. The stadium had NO NAME in the Yugo days. It was affectionately called "Bijeli Brijeg" but the Bijeli Brijeg is the district and the hill above it. It had no name.

I don't know if Velez "belongs" there, a lot of people "belong" in their own houses but are living as refugees elsewhere. Untill this problem is sorted, the stadium is less important. It is the property of the Priroda Grada Mostara and was leased to Zrinjski, just like it was leased to Velez in the Yugo days.

the lease was for, if you can believe this 101 years...but other teams can lease it for games...as I said, it would not be a good move yet. I don't know what the hurry is with the Velezovci.

Velez rallied hard to be back in the BB stadium, but their strategy was "all the 'Premierligasi' have a right to the stadium in Mostar" (they said 'premierligasi' to avoid NK Branitelj and Bjelopoljac to argue for the stadium along the same lines, both these teams are from the Mostar area)

Their argument is down the drain now, they're not premierligasi anymore...

Look, Ero. You leased stadium for the maximum amount of time permited by law. If it was possible youll leased it for millenium. Why Velez didnt bid for stadium ? You know whats this all about and dont play innocence.
FC Sarajevo needs to pay 5 MILION KM for leasing Kosevo stadium for just 10 years. Also we need to employ 50 workers etc. What you did there is called lopovluk.

I'm not playing innocent, if you have a problem with the way the city is divided, take it up with the politicians that signed the Dayton accords.

Zrinjski leased it, it's at the very end of the western city...and I don't care if they paid $1 for it, they paid and they got it.

Now who will give my house back to me before Velez gets to play at BB?

My point being, let the huge issues get sorted first, and then Velez can talk about playing in our stadium.

Well said.
But, as you know, politics just cant be ignored. You know what kind of country we are living in. So, in your way of thinking, someone "occupied" your home - and Zrinjski occupied stadium. It seams that we are still in war...

But I understand your point, I hope you are understanding mine, lets finish this talk - its going nowhere. Things will sort out some day I hope, there is nothing you and I can do about it.

Fair enough. From what I've seen, I think we're all mature enough to discuss it without turning nasty. I don't think anything in the Federacija is occupied, but I do think some other, more important injustices should be a priority.
