Estoril Praia 1-2 SPORTING CP

Unfortunately I couldn't watch the derby last week but after reading about the game and watching the highlights what happened in that game was not exactly surprising.

This last stretch of the season showed the team lacking the same attacking threat that we've seen earlier mainly because we have little options upfront besides Slimani. Teo keeps disappointing, Barcos is still adapting and Montero is no longer there. We also showed a very high percentage of missed clear goal chances which is getting to epic proportions. These 6 points dropped against Rio Ave, Guimarães and Benfica (all teams that posed us more or less the same amount of threat, ie. close to none) are all due to our lack of accuracy in front of goal and that also includes our midfielders and not just the strikers.

Another unsurprising factor was the leniency with which refs act whenever Benfica is playing. Unbelievable how Renato Sanches managed to escape a sending off after what he did. Only in a corrupt little league like ours really.

Now we have a much harder list of matches in front of us when compared with those of Benfica and Porto but we will not give up. We need to improve our efficiency and we need to go on working hard, as these are things that are in our hands. Controlling the refs, manipulating the media and selling drugs in our stadium it's for others, not for us.

Today we visit Estoril in a sold out stadium surely almost entirely filled with our fans. Win it, that's all we ask.

What a spectacular goal by Slimani! Gets a cross from the right, changes foot leaving his marker on the floor, and finally unleashes a powerful shot on the top left corner. Boom! 1-0 at 5'.

Once again a great work by Slimani. An apparently too high cross by Bryan Ruiz from the left is met exactly in the right place by Slimani's header who buries his second right before the break.

2-0 at 45'.

Great first half by Sporting completely dominating the game and not giving a tiny chance for Estoril to even reach their attacking zone. Both full backs (Schelotto and Marvin Zeegelaar) are giving width to our game, João Mário and Bryan Ruiz are bossing in midfield and Slimani is back to his good self: two goals, never giving up, a true lion.

A great answer by the team and we can only expect more in the second period, as our second halves are almost always our best periods in the game in this season.

Sporting started well this second half, could have scored the 3rd several times with some really great chances but a goal from nowhere by Estoril transformed these last 15' in a very nervy affair.

Sporting's control of the game was never in doubt in this second half up until Estoril's goal but maybe some earlier changes in our midfield could have closed the game earlier.

Slimani had a great game, getting a brace and being very close to grab his second hat trick of the season.

Good answer by the team showing that we are very far from being finished.

I agree, the decision to sell Montero in Jan is a bad one... we severely lack finishers on this team.

We really need to hope Barcos comes good and is able to chip in with a few goals down the stretch otherwise SCP will not have a real shot at the title.

of course Benfica has to drop points at some point, but well see how they handle the pressure - they were never in first place until now but time and time again the small teams seem to open their legs inexplicably whenever they play Benfica but eat grass when its time to play Sporting.
