Q & A: Why is xtratime so slow?

I know a lot of people have been asking this and it seems there has been a lack of satisfactory explanation from the management.

Q. Why is xtratime so slow?

A. I'm sure most of you remember that the site went offline a couple of weeks ago (?) At the time, the management learnt that it was due to unpaid bills (on the part of the owner of xtratime, Jan) for hosting and worked out a deal with the host to extend the online presence of xtratime by 3 days. In the meantime, they entered into talks with the host about the future of xtratime. It was decided that a month's time would do good to go over the various possibilities and the host agreed to extend the hosting by a month, under the same terms agreed by the owner. But to avoid costs in region of $500/month, they agreed to place a traffic limit on the server, so that traffic towards the site would be limited and it would not exceed the agreed monthly amount of 50GB.

Q. What happens once this period of one month comes to an end in mid-September?

A. Work is being done to find a durable solution to the problem of hosting, which is very expensive. By the time our current agreement expires, we hope to have secured a satisfactory solution.

Bandwidth of 50gb a month does not explain a slow access time to the site. All that means is once it exceeds that, then XT will not be accessible or they pay a premium charge per GB extra.

The traffic limit? You are only allowing x amount of connections to the site at a time then?

Oh god, I can reply!

No, not being sarcastic. Just that whenever I access this site, it HANGS on me. It DIES. It just DOESN'T LOAD. It's not only slow, it just gives me a BLUE SCREEN.

So what's the deal now? Any luck finding Jan?

With or without Jan, we are moving on because if we dont and he is not here, the site will be gone forever.

I think we should be able to announce what the future of Xtratime will be by the second week of September, a little more than 2 weeks. We have developed feasible, good alternative plans that will keep our site online and that can allow to access our pages as fast as before. Paulmay may will be visiting our current hosts Inetu and he will come back with all the legal and financial questions regarding Xtratime for us to implement the best plan possible for a secure, fast and reliable Xtratime

So keep you ears open and have a little more patience.

Not exactly, but the traffic is effectively limited to 30KB/s, anymore is just rejected. So just imagine what kind of effects that would result in and you have the present day situation.

I learned of xtratime problem thru your post in WHT. I'm myself own a soccer website and run Vbulletin as well. Once, i wanted to put my website to join socceralliance and it is really wasted to have such a vibrant community such as xtratime to be gone.

Please let me know if there is anything i can do to help. I can be reached thru email in my profile.

Hope to hear from you.

Thank you! I'll do that if anything comes to mind but it might be easier if I knew what kind of help you are offering (?)

Why not turn on gzip compression?
It lowers bandwith use by quite a bit.

So what are the good alternative plans you have, Kaya? I just find it hard to believe you can do anything to this site without Jan, since legally speaking he's the owner and neither you nor anyone else has any rights (moral or otherwise) to this site.

Wonder what he's doing now, our Danish friend...

Well this forum is slow, but it isn't half as bad as i thought it was, especially hearing all the 'horror' stories about the speed of XT at the moment. Hopefully this forum can pull itself together - it will have to be a marvellous group effort to steady this ship again.

Ciao,
Tim

I am the owner of Soccer Gaming - www.soccergaming.com.

I used to communicate with Jan quite a bit when he was online.

I would be willing to offer the Xtratime Forums completely free hosting on a dedicated fast server with unlimited bandwidth.

Contact me at [email protected] if you are interested. Thanks.
