Paraguay call up uncapped Diaz for Brazil qualifier

ASUNCION, March 22 (Reuters) - Uncapped striker Osvaldo Diaz was included in Paraguay's squad on Monday for next week's World Cup qualifier at home to world champions Brazil.

The Guarani striker, joint leading scorer in the South American Libertadores Cup this year with four goals, was the only major surprise in the 22-man squad for the March 31 clash.

Uruguayan coach Anibal Ruiz stayed faithful to his policy of mixing members of the so-called old guard, such as defender Carlos Gamarra and Francisco Arce, with younger players such as midfielder Carlos Bonet Angel Ortiz.

Gamarra and Arce were in the teams which reached the last 16 at each of the last two World Cups.

Paraguay lead the South American qualifying group for the 2006 World Cup with nine points from four games, having won their last three matches.

Brazil, beaten 2-1 on their last trip to Asuncion in 2000, are one point behind.

Ruiz also called up Salvador Cabanas, joint top scorer in the Mexican championship with 10 goals.

He again left out veteran midfielder Roberto Acuna, who is playing for Spanish second division club Elche.

Squad:

Goalkeepers - Justo Villar (Libertad), Ricardo Tavarelli (Gremio, Brazil)

Defenders - Francisco Arce (Libertad), Julio Cesar Caceres (Olimpia), Carlos Gamarra (Inter Milan, Italy), Denis Caniza (Santos Laguna, Mexico), Dario Veron (UNAM-Pumas, Mexico), Delio Toledo (Real Zaragoza, Spain), Paulo da Silva (Toluca, Mexico), Dario Caballero (Independiente, Argentina).

Midfielders - Carlos Bonet (Libertad), Carlos Paredes (Reggina, Italy), Angel Ortiz (Libertad), Julio Cesar Enciso (Olimpia), Jorge Campos (Quilmes, Argentina), Guido Alvarenga (Libertad)

Forwards - Jose Cardozo (Toluca, Mexico), Roque Santa Cruz (Bayern Munich, Germany), Freddy Bareiro (Libertad), Nelson Cuevas (River Plate, Argentina), Salvador Cabanas (Chiapas-Jaguares, Mexico), Osvaldo Diaz (Guarani, Paraguay)

Solano to miss Colombia qualifier

LIMA, March 21 (Reuters) - Peru captain Nolberto Solano will miss this month's World Cup qualifier at home to Colombia after pulling a hamstring during a match for English premier league Aston Villa, a team official said on Sunday.

'I spoke to him and he confirmed that he had suffered the injury to his left leg,' national team director Gustavo Zevallos told Reuters. 'His recovery is likely to take around one month.'

Zevallos added: 'This is something nobody expected, we're worried.'

Peru, who are attempting to qualify for their first World Cup since 1982, face Colombia in Lima on March 31.

Solano has scored in two of their four qualifiers so far, including the equaliser in last November's 1-1 draw at home to world champions Brazil.

He limped out of Saturday's 2-0 home defeat by Blackburn Rovers in the first half.

Like all the other South American teams, Peru are already facing difficulties because they are only allowed their players for 48 hours before next week's games.

The problem has arisen because the matches are being played on a date which has been allocated by FIFA for friendlies, not competitive internationals.

Peru are sixth in the South American group with five points from four games.

Colombia are propping up the 10-team table with only one point and have already played three home matches.

Uruguayan coach Juan Ramon Carrasco has named his squad for the match against Venezuela on March 31.
The big surprise is the omission of Adrian Romero, who scored Uruguay's second goal against Chile.

Veteran striker Luis Alberto Romero has been called-up though after Carrasco saw him play briefly for Nacional.

Several players from Uruguay have made the squad, although the majority is made up of overseas players.

Uruguay squad:
Barbat (Danubio), Joe Emerson Bizera (Penarol), Alejandro Lago (Fenix), Pablo Melo (Cerro), Jorge Curbelo (Danubio), Ignacio Gonzalez (Danubio), Jorge Martinez (Wanderers), Carlos Bueno (Penarol), Alexander Medina (Nacional), Luis Romero (Nacional), Fabian Carini (Standard Liege), Gustavo Munua (Deportivo La Coruna); Dario Rodriguez (Shalke), Cristian Gonzalez (Las Palmas), Gonzalo Sorondo (Standard Liege), Washington Tais (Betis), Martin Ligüera (Mallorca), Richard Nunez (Grasshoppers), Ruben Olivera (Atletico Madrid), Marcelo Romero (Malaga), Marcelo Sosa (Spartak Moscow); Vicente Sanchez (Toluca), Carlos Maria Morales (Atlas), German Hornos (Sevilla) Walter Pandiani (Deportivo La Coruna), Alvaro Recoba (Internazionale), Javier Chevanton (Lecce) and Diego Forlan (Manchester United).

Except Solano every other star of Peru is there.Plus Juan Cominges,a player that i'm not sure if he can help the NT,based on his performances in the Greek League before some years.

kostas your thinking of paul cominges
juan cominges is his younger brother

he is 21 years old and is currently playing great for sporting cristal of peru in copa libertadores

I think you're right condor.;)

For the coming games,i think that Argentina has theoritically the easiest task against Ecuador.Paraguay-Brazil will be a great derby and everything is open, same for the Lima game.Peru is right now Chile's main threat for the qualifying spots but i would like a win against Colombia,to leave them definite outside of the competition.Uruguay-Venezuela would be a healthy walk for Charruas some years ago,but now they won't have such an easy task even if they are the favorites.I'm curious to see if Carrasco will play again the ambitious formation with 3 attackers. In La Paz game,i'm optimistic for a win for the Chileans as this time the only enemy is the altidute and not a low morale or absences.

Colombia grant Angel time with Villa

LONDON, March 25 (Reuters) - Colombia are happy for striker Juan Pablo Angel to play for Aston Villa on Saturday just five days before their match against Peru in Lima despite being stuck at the bottom of the South American World Cup qualifying group.

Angel, who has scored 20 goals for English premier league club Villa in all competitions this season, has expressed his gratitude to Colombia coach Reinaldo Rueda whose decision has avoided a club-versus-country conflict.

Colombia have taken only one point from their first four matches in the 10-nation round-robin qualifying competition.

'I'm very pleased that the national coach has been so understanding of my position as it was important to me to be available to Villa on Saturday,' Angel said as he looked ahead to the league match at Charlton Athletic.

'I'm very aware that I have responsibilities to my country and to my club. This arrangement means I can now serve both,' he told Villa's official website.

Villa, who have recovered from a poor start to the season, are eighth in the league and chasing a place in Europe.

Angel's Ecuadorean team mate Ulises de la Cruz is also available to Villa before flying to Buenos Aires for his country's match away to Argentina.

De la Cruz, who has been covering well for injured right back Mark Delaney, said: 'I was hoping to play for Aston Villa because I have played a few games lately and want to carry on playing.'

However, Villa's Peru midfielder Nolberto Solano is still nursing a hamstring injury and is doubtful for the Charlton match. Peru said last week that the former Newcastle United player would miss the match against Colombia.

Angel said he was not sure if he would have recovered in time to play when Villa host Manchester City in a league match on April 4, just four days after the Lima game.

'The journey back from South America is always the hardest one to recover from. But I am not giving up hope,' he said.

Kleberson out of Brazil WC qualifier

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 26 (Reuters) - Brazilian midfielder Kleberson has been ruled out of next week's World Cup qualifier away to Paraguay because of a knee injury.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said on its website that it had received a message from Manchester United saying he was unable to play.

The CBF, which in previous such cases has insisted players travel to Brazil to be checked by their own doctors, said the player had been released and would not be replaced.

The world champions face Paraguay on Wednesday in what is always a difficult fixture for them. They were beaten 2-1 on their last visit to Asuncion in July 2000.

Brazil also lost 1-0 at home to Paraguay in their first match after winning the 2002 World Cup and the same scoreline at under-23 level in January cost them a place at this year's Olympic Games.

Paraguay lead the single South American qualifying group with nine points from four games, one more than Brazil and Argentina.

Most of Brazil's players will travel to Paraguay after playing for their European clubs at the weekend.

As the match is taking place on a date allocated for friendlies by FIFA, both Brazil and Paraguay are only entitled to their players 48 hours in advance.

Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, who has already said that his squad will have a single training session before the match, put a brave face on the situation.

'We have to get better in the face of difficulties,' he told Globo television on Friday.

'We can get over this. We'll just have to show that, when everyone thinks that the situation is against us, we can pull through.'

Parreira said he was encouraged by Ronaldo's return to the Real Madrid side after a thigh injury on Wednesday and the recent form of Ronaldinho for Barcelona and Kaka for AC Milan.

'Brazil is very well served,' he said.

Bielsa fumes at fixture logjam

BUENOS AIRES, March 28 (Reuters) - Angry Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa hit out at fixture congestion on Sunday, saying it was an aggression against the players.

Bielsa, whose team face Ecuador at home in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, was furious after Inter Milan included Argentine midfielders Javier Zanetti and Cristian Gonzalez in their squad for an Italian championship match against Reggiana on Sunday.

He said that although he considered both players vital to the team, he was dropping the duo to 'preserve them'.

Like other South American teams, Argentina are only entitled to have their players for 48 hours before this week´s World Cup matches because the games are taking place on a date allocated by world governing body FIFA for friendly internationals.

As a result, several players took part in European domestic games at the weekend before flying to South America.

'It's an aggression against the players because it forces them to take on commitments in the wrong conditions,' said Bielsa.

Striker Hernan Crespo, who played for Chelsea in an English premier league match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, also complained.

'This decision by the clubs can only harm the players,' said Crespo.

Bielsa added that Zanetti and Gonzalez were sad at his decision.

Argentina have taken eight points from their first four matches in the South American qualifiers for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Revised squad:

Goalkeepers - Pablo Cavallero (Celta, Spain), Franco Costanzo (River Plate)

Defenders - Roberto Ayala (Valencia, Spain), Gabriel Heinze (Paris St Germain, France), Gonzalo Rodriguez (San Lorenzo), Nicolas Burdisso (Boca Juniors)

Midfielders - Sebastian Battaglia (Villarreal, Spain), Juan Pablo Sorin (Paris St Germain, France), Pablo Aimar (Valencia, Spain), Andres D'Alessandro (Wolfsburg, Germany), Juan Roman Riquelme (Villarreal, Spain), Javier Mascherano (River Plate), Luis Gonzalez (River Plate), Clemente Rodriguez (Boca Juniors).

Forwards - Cesar Delgado (Cruz Azul, Mexico), Hernan Crespo (Chelsea, England), Javier Saviola (Barcelona, Spain), Carlos Tevez (Boca Juniors), Mariano Gonzalez (Racing Club)

Argentina to report Inter to FIFA

BUENOS AIRES, March 29 (Reuters) - Argentina are to complain to FIFA, saying Inter Milan failed to release Javier Zanetti and Cristian Gonzalez in time for Tuesday's World Cup qualifier with Ecuador, media reports said on Monday.

Inter included both midfielders in their squad for Sunday's Italian Serie A match against Reggina, making it impossible for them to arrive in Buenos Aires the stipulated 48 hours before kickoff.

Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa, who dropped both players as a result, attacked the Italian club, telling Argentine media that fixture congestion was killing the sport.

'They weren't going to be able to meet the demands of professional football,' he said.

'They were willing to come but the situation was absolutely abnormal. They accepted the decision with sadness and disappointment because they have a great identity with the national team.

'But I told them that asking them not to travel in these circumstances showed that we value and recognise them as players.'

Bielsa added that he considered even the regulatory 48 hours as insufficient.

'If a player is going to play in different continents, he should arrive five days before,' Bielsa said.

'In this case, they did not even respect the 48-hour period. It makes me indignant that it has come to this. It's killing football. It's taking away from the public the possibility of seeing the spectacle they would wish for.'

National teams are usually entitled to have their players five days before competitive matches but this week's World Cup qualifiers are taking place on a date allocated by FIFA for friendlies. As a result, the 48-hour rule applies.

  :D

Preview: Argentina - Ecuador

Argentina are looking to pick up another three points on their journey to the 2006 World Cup on Tuesday, standing in their way is Ecuador.

Despite playing at home, a win might not be so easy for Argentina as they have had trouble putting together an ideal squad.

Argentina manager Marcelo Bielsa took drastic action after Inter Milan decided to include midfielders Kily Gonzalez and Javier Zanetti in their squad for Sunday's Serie A match with Reggina.

Bielsa says he was forced to drop them from the squad, even though he considers them fundamental parts of his team.

Ecuador boasts a full strength squad and will be a tough team to topple.

Team News:

Argentina:

In their last five meetings with Ecuador, Argentina has dominated the rivalry winning 4 of 5 matches.

Furthermore, they have outscored Ecuador during those encounters 15 to 6.

Manager Bielsa cannot count on Chelsea's Juan Sebastian Veron because of injury while Roma's Walter Samuel is suspended for this encounter.

Carlos Tevez and Juan Roman Riquelme have been named to the squad but are not expected to start.

Ecuador:

Manager Hernan Dario Gomez says that former Celta Vigo striker Ivan Kaviedes will be a game-time decision but is unlikely to start.

Ecuador has just four points from four matches thus far, but is entering this contest claiming they "have nothing to loose."

Look for Ecuador to try and launch some quick counter attacks in order to try and catch the home side off guard at the back.

Form Guide:

Argentina (W,D,W,W,D)
08/20/2003 Argentina-Uruguay (Friendly) 3-2
09/06/2003 Argentina-Chile (World Cup Qual.)2-2
09/09/2003 Venezuela-Argentina (World Cup Qual.) 0-3
11/15/2003 Argentina-Bolivia (World Cup Qual.)3-0
11/19/2003 Colombia-Argentina (World Cup Qual.) 1-1

Ecuador:(W,L,L,D,L)
09/06/2003 Ecuador-Venezuela (World Cup Qual.)2-0
09/10/2003 Brazil-Ecuador (World Cup Qual.) 1-0
11/15/2003 Paraguay-Ecuador (World Cup Qual.) 2-1
11/19/2003 Ecuador-Peru (World Cup Qual.) 0-0
03/10/2004 Mexico-Ecuador (Friendly) 2-1

Probable Lineups:

ARGENTINA: Pablo Cavallero; Roberto Ayala, Gabriel Heinze; Clemente Rodríguez, Luis González, Juan Pablo Sorín; Pablo Aimar, Andrés D'Alessandro; César Delgado, Hernán Crespo and Mariano González.

ECUADOR: José Cevallos; Ulises De la Cruz, Iván Hurtado, Giovanni Espinoza, Néicer Reasco; Alfonso Obregón, Marlon Ayoví, Edwin Tenorio, Edison Méndez, Kléber Chalá; Carlos Tenorio.

Referee: Martín Vázquez (Uruguay). :yuck:

Players To Watch:

Pablo Aimar (Argentina) the diminutive playmaker must bring his 'A' game if Argentina is to be successful. He has been dynamite for Valencia this season and it's time for him to shine on the international stage.

Iván Hurtado (Ecuador) the experienced fullback will need to be in outstanding form as he is a key component in his squad's back line. His commanding presence at the back should ensure that Ecuador's defence remains organized under extreme pressure.

Striker Hernan Crespo struck on the hour to give Argentina a hard-fought 1-0 win over Ecuador in their World Cup qualifier in Buenos Aires. The Chelsea player cut inside his marker and scored with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area to break the deadlock in the South American group match after the Ecuador defence had lost possession. The goal was a relief for Argentina after their opponents had slightly the better of the first half and threatened to pull off an upset.

Ronaldo wary of dangers for Brazil

ASUNCION, March 30 (Reuters) - Brazil striker Ronaldo has said his team will have to be prepared to make sacrifices to keep intact their unique record of playing at every World Cup.

'This is a really difficult competition,' said Ronaldo, who is playing in the South American World Cup qualifiers for the first time.

'Our team has always had difficulty qualifying but we have to get over this - if we don't, we won't go to the World Cup,' he told reporters on Tuesday, a day ahead of Brazil's match against Paraguay.

'All the games are difficult but we have to get over the other problems - the travelling, the tiredness, the lack of understanding on the field.'

Ronaldo played for Real Madrid at the weekend, arrived in Asuncion on Monday and will be back in Spain in time for the following weekend.

'For the qualifiers, everyone has to make a sacrifice. All the players are aware of this. The players who are in Europe have to travel a long way and, at the end, we have to get a result.

Brazil are third in the South American qualifying group with eight points from their first four games, one less than Paraguay who lead the group.

Ronaldo added that other teams tried harder against Brazil.

'To play against the five-times world champions is an incentive for anyone,' he said.

Ronaldo was included Brazil's 1994 World Cup squad as a 17-year-old but did not play in the qualifiers. Brazil, as 1994 champions, did not have to play in the 1998 qualifiers and Ronaldo missed the 2002 qualifiers because of his knee injuries.

Brazil Held, Colombia Wins, Venezuela Shocks The World !!!

04/01/2004. World Cup champions Brazil were held to a goalless draw by Paraguay in a foul-filled World Cup qualifier on Wednesday.

Paraguay never let Brazil settle, and keept the feared trio of Kaka, Ronaldinho and Ronaldo under control with a combination of tough tackling, organized defending and a bit of luck.

With this result, Paraguay remains second in the South American qualifying group with ten points from five matches while Brazil is in third place, one point back of Paraguay.

Elsewhere, first-half goals from Freddy Grisales and Frankie Oviedo gave Colombia a 2-0 victory over Peru.

This is just their first victory of qualifying competition.

Grisales volleyed home from close range in the 29th minute to put Colombia ahead.

Oviedo doubled the adavntage when he leaped between two defenders and headed the ball, after a well placed cross, just three minutes before halftime.

Venezuela pulled off a huge upset with a stunning 3-0 away win over Uruguay.

Gabriel Urdaneta fired Venezuela into the lead with a before Hector Gonzalez and Juan Arango scored second half breakaway goals as Uruguay's defence fell apart.

The hosts did hit the post in the first half while Deportivo's Pandiani missed a sitter that could have evened the score.

But Argentina had to play without captain Zanetti  and without Kily... that's the reason they struggled to beat Ecuador.
