Maribor Champions League 2014-15

Congrats to Maribor, going to Glasgow and beating Celtic 1:0 to qualify for the Champions League for the second time in the club's history, first time since the 1999/2000 season. More impressively for Maribor they did it despite being unseeded in the past two rounds of the qualifications.

In the second qualifying round they beat Bosnian champions Zrinjski Mostar 2:0 on aggregate, in the third round they beat Maccabi Tel-Aviv 3:2 on aggregate albeit helped out by the fact Maccabi had to play in Cyprus.

In the playoffs they drew Celtic, who lost to Legia Warsaw on aggregate in the third round but were reinstated when Legia fielded a suspended player. Maribor had a negative 1:1 result in Maribor meaning they had to win in Glasgow, never easy, but they did it and I must say deserved. Celtic only looked decent in the final 10 minutes when Maribor were defending and looking tired.

So Maribor will be in Pot 4 for Thursday's draw, who would you like to see Maribor draw. Would you like a glamor group where you lose all 6 matches or a manageable group (something like Porto, Basel, Ajax) where its not attractive but possible for points?

If I reflect from the past 1999 many people here were disappointed because we didn't get glamor opponents. I suppose that even the players are dreaming of playing on Camp Nou, Bernabeu or similar legendary places.

I can see us stealing a point at home from CSKA, Basel, Olympiacos or similar...

The CL draw has concluded, Maribor have been draw in Group G

Chelsea (ENG)
Schalke 04 (GER)
Sporting Lisbon (POR)
MARIBOR

Tough group but some interesting teams, maybe Maribor can sneak a draw at home

scoreless at halftime against Sporting, Sporting started better and created some good chances but Maribor grew into the game as the half went to a close, including hitting the post

Luka Zahovic with a 90th minute goal to get a point for Maribor!

Congrats, good result, this was realistically one of the games Maribor can get something out of. Maribor in second place as well at the moment p

The only other game I can see them getting a result from is against Schalke at home, good result for them at Stamford Bridge, I didn't see the match but I heard Draxler was the best player though I suppose Schalke were aided by a weaker XI [no Costa, Drogba starting for one thing]. But as we know Schalke are well capable of delivering an off color performance and at home Maribor are capable of taking advantage of that.

It is a good result although it could have even been better!

Maribor and Ludogorets really turned up on Matchday 1 - lets see if they can keep it up!

thanks to ESPN3 I am able to watch this game...

Maribor have been very impressive and I must say I'm surprised how high they are pressing Schalke who can't seem to handle it. Maribor deserved a goal and have had the better chances. Only worry is Schalke simply can't play worse than they did in the 1st half

Sloppy goal to concede, Maribor lose the ball just outside the penalty box and Huntelar capitalizes

Maribor hold on for the draw, they were under some pressure but Handanovic really didn't have to make a big save. Maribor had a good counter in the final minutes but one of the players was too selfish and shot instead of passing

They definitely have a chance Jeff!

Schalke are always vulnerable for a slip up or two and Sporting haven't played in the UCL for a while so who knows

6:0 loss to Chelsea, a bit harsh the scoreline as Chelsea got a soft penalty and an own goal in the second half. Ibrami missed a penalty kick. Maribor still in 3rd place after three rounds as Sporting lost to Schalke.

In two weeks Maribor host Chelsea, Chelsea will secure passage to the R16 with a win in MB but they do have a tough fixture after that game so they may not come with strongest squad

Maribor lose against Domzale, now trail by 9 points. You so sure they'll win the league, HS?

Maribor with a point against Chelsea!

They rode their luck a bit and Hazard missed a penalty late but this is a historical result and unbelievably Maribor are still alive after MD4

Maribor visit Sporting Lisbon in the next matchday, need to get a result there but it will be tough
