Road to Euro 2016

So, with 24 teams in Euro 2016, I think it would be a failure not to qualify.
Here are the pots:
POT 1: Spain, Germany, Holland, Italy, England, Greece, Portugal, Russia, Bosnia
POT 2: Sweden, Ukraine, Croatia, Denmark, Switzerland, Belgium, Czech Rep., Hungary, Ireland
POT 3: Serbia, Turkey, Slovenia, Romania, Israel, Norway, Slovakia, Austria, Montenegro
POT 4: Armenia, Poland, Scotland, Finland, Latvia, Wales, Bulgaria, Estonia, Iceland
POT 5: Belarus, N. Ireland, Albania, Lithuania, Moldova, FYROM, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Cyprus
POT 6: Luxembourg, Kazakhstan, Liechtenstein, Faroe Island, Malta, Andorra, San Marino, Gibraltar

Top two from each group qualify directly, while third placed teams go into playoff. Again, since we are in the Pot 3, not getting at least into the playoffs, should be considered a huge failure, worth of sacking the coach.

For once, I'd like to see us get the group with teams that we never played before in the qualifiers. Something like these:
Germany
Hungary
Slovenia
Wales
FYROM
Gibraltar

Too bad we can't get drawn against Austria, would love to kick their asses in the qualifiers for a change...

Slovenia for sure is in Pot 3, but playoff results will be used so teams like Croatia, Sweden or Ukraine (even Romania) can still move up

Pot 2 really doesn't look too scary minus 3-4 teams, as long as you avoid a team like Belgium or even Sweden 2nd place is realistic. Problem is there are some "mines" in Pot 4

True, but that doesn't change much. Germany will still be in Pot 1 and Hungary in Pot 2.

I don't fear anyone from Pot 4, not even Armenia, who are much better than people give them credit to. I mean, I don't think we would necessarily beat them, but I prefer to play against them than against most of the teams from Pot 2 or even Pot 3.

I think your right, huge failure if we cannot qualify now that it is 24 teams. I'm feeling a lot more confident when considering how we finished the World Cup qualifiers under Katanec.

How are people viewing his return to manager of Slovenia? Are people more hopeful now?

Those are really sexy groups, but what do they have in common with Slovenia?

surprisingly...NO

It looked like Slovenia gave us too much credit and came out with a too careful and passive gameplan. It seemed like you're happy with a draw.

Big games are easy than the other games, unfortunately. Every times we have the control the games, under the control the games, during the games we had the some possibilities, some big chances, some big okazyons, something like that but what can I do, sometimes? And….it’s the football, that’s the football, something happened. Everything is something happened. - Fatih Terim

pathetic result for Slovenia but the campaign is still young, likely though a fight for 3rd unless they can beat one of England/Switzerland

Much needed win against Switzerland who are off to a slow start in their campaign. It doesn't necessarily cancel out their loss to Estonia but I felt they need to get at least a point from this match

Next they play Lithuania away on Sunday, who have 6 points from 2 but that's after playing San Marino and Estonia. Really a game Slovenia should be winning if they have top 2 ambitions

Two goals for Novakovic in the first half to give Slovenia a victory in Vilnius, pretty straight forward, controlled performance but boring second half as Lithuania didn't threaten much

These two results were well needed after the loss in Tallinn. You would assume they will win the 2 matches against San Marino and the home matches against EST/LTU meaning 3rd place is the minimum they will finish but decent chances for 2nd

Slovenia next face England at Wembley in November, if they get anything out of that match its a bonus

Not much updated in this thread

Anyway looks like a fight for 2nd with Switzerland, third place should be the bare minimum at this point. England are running away with the group but they come to Ljubljana in June. Important to note that Slovenia do have the H2H advantage over the Swiss at the moment but later in September they have to play away.

Let`s updating this
Just like in 2011, Estonia and Slovenia are probably deciding, who goes to play-offs

Slovenia did so well to go up two goals but then decided to park the bus and have no possession plus they couldn't run anymore in the final stages of the game. Bonehead mistake by Krhin which led to the winning goal. Pretty much third place is the maximum and a win over Estonia should be enough to do it with games against Lithuania and San Marino in October

But they really blew it today, went from a solid 2nd place position to 4th place and a nervous game against Estonia in a span of 10-15 minutes

Yeah seems that 3rd place is a maximum, I don't see Switzerland not getting 2nd spot.

Slovenia has two "winnable" games vs Lithuania (at home) and San Marino, but even two wins won't probably be enough for qualifying directly to Euro 2016.

I know Novakovic is on good form, but I hope Beric will be starting at least one of those two games.

Teams I like: Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia), Peñarol (Uruguay), Chicago Fire (USA), Volgar Gazprom Astrakhan (Russia), Vannes (France), Dundee FC (Scotland), Arsenal (England) and Hammarby (Sweden).
